I will be in SEA during January 2005. I want to go to Batam through Singapore. Tentative dates are January 11 - 16.

Today was my lucky day: I land in Jakarta a few days after Xmas and will do a few days there and Batam before heading to AC after New Year's.

Maybe with diligent study I can increase my Indonesian vocabulary to about 25 words between now and then!

I will be taking my cherry trip to Jakarta on 10th for 4 nights. Being a complete newbie could I have some advice please? If any one is going to be around, I sure would be glad for someone to help break me in.

Is there a location where most of the action takes place?

What would be a good choice of hotel i.e. Girl friendly and near the action. $$$ is not a problem as this is a business trip. Company have suggested Le Meridien, does this fit the bill?

What and where are the best discos to go for finding a hot all-nighter?

Blazers, I've never been to Cambodia, but I think it's been a well-worn path for SEA mongers for years. Jakarta will stay under the radar for quite awhile because the scene is not at ALL geared to the bule customer. Even if Western guys start showing up in Angeles City type #'s, which they surely WON'T, the scene is so large there that they could be easily assimilated.

Now if the Japanese and Koreans were to put it on the map...

For NightClubs and Discos, start your evening of at one of the 5* hotel nightclubs BATS (Shangri-La), 30 (Meridian), and CJ's (Mulia) and then later head down to My Bar in Blok M. Or late night you could go to Stadium or Millenium in North Jakarta.

You might want to read some of the numerous reports Crazier andI have written about Jakarta to get some ideas.

If it wasn't my money, I would stay at Hotel Mulia, or the Shangri-La, or the Marriott

Thanks guys I feel a lot happier now I have your info. My company is suggesting the Meridien and it sounds like that is a good bet. I am lucky I have an open book, so can really choose the most convenient place without having to worry about the $$$, the downside is I have to work 12 hours, but hell who needs sleep!

I will try to get back to Jakarta before I fly home, so will try to hook up with you when you are there.

Golf & Mongering

I will be taking a trip to Jakarta - Bogor - Bandung. Dates - IN on 30th Jan and Back to Singapore on 5th.

Basically camping out in Jakarta for the mongering with day trips to golf in the Bogor area where the caddies are cute, friendly and some cheeky! (and will play too!)

Will also spend a couple of nights in Bandung; where the air is cool and the women are hot!

Excellent. Had a feeling you "might" be there around those times. Just got confirmation from another in the usual group that he will be in AC around those dates as well so it is starting to look like an Hombre convention.

Yeah. The dates are still the same as the ones I sent you before. This may be similar to my last trip that I was on with you . Tentatively I plan to spend the first 4 or 5 days in AC, then the last four in Jakarta. But where I spend my time is completely open within those dates.

Still not sure I want to do Jakarta completely alone though. This is mainly because I would like to explore some new places, but we'll see. I need to start researching now so I can get addresses, etc.

I have just come back from 2 months there and am wilted already Jakarta really rocks big time, its like going to a different brewery every day with free beer on tap, all day and night. It has now become my no. 1 destination for various reasons which I will explain if I ever get around to writing a trip report. I think as long you stay away from main US chains, you should be ok ;-) In my two visits to Indo - including one earlier this year - I have always thought of Jakarta as a "Muslim lite" destination :-) I would not hestitate going back one bit..... already planning my third trip sometime next year.

Now, if Asia was not so #$@#@# away from Brazil where I reside, I would probably go twice a year. Man, those Europeans have it good! Both Brazil and Asia are a reasonable distance away.

Alright...got my ticket to Hong Kong booked already. Now I have to figure out the Hong Kong - Singapore leg, then the Singapore - JKT leg. Have to be in Singapore as I'll use that for my base.
