Kind've a weird problem to report. I have no problem navigating the majority of the site. But when I get onto the Mexico Chat, things tend to slow down and then my screen always freezes at some point, within a minute or two (sometimes immediately). This has been happening for 2 weeks now, and the problem is limited to the Mexico Chat. Very, very strange. Has anybody else been having this problem? I can bypass the problem using "Chrono" to access the most recent posts, but it is a hassle.
I should add that I've been having some odd problems with my Earthlink DSL connection, so haven't ruled this out as contributing to the problem. And... I have a Mac. Have mercy.

I've been having the EXACT same problem as Dogster, and like him I'm on a Mac and I'm on earthlink (but don't have DSL). It was responding slow before, now the screen just freezes after I read the first post (no fun).
By Dogster on Thursday, August 29, 2002 - 10:53 pm: Edit
Toehead: right. And it is just on the Mexico Chat, right? (maybe the other Chats too, I dunno).
My Earthlink DSL line is whacked. I lose the connection periodically. But the specificity of the screen-freezing problem makes me wonder if there's somethin' goin on here that needs attention. Like maybe Hombre is sabotaging our accounts... (just kidding!!!)

Well my screen is still freezing when I go to Mexico chat. Dogster I don't think it's your DSL line as I'm having the same problem and don't have DSL..maybe Hombre is politely giving us a hint.
By Hombre on Friday, August 30, 2002 - 08:46 pm: Edit
Jesus Christ, maybe Hombre doesn't have a Mac and doesn't sit in front of the computer 24/7.

Fer cripes sake. The conspiracy theory is a j.o.k.e. Just tryin' to figure out why this is always happening to my screen (and Toehead's). If the two of us are having this problem, we probably aren't alone.

Mac/Internet Exlorer/Screen Freeze.
I have the same problem you guys have been describing. I use a Mac, IE 5.2 and Cox Cable. After being in Mexico Chat and reading a few posts... my screen freezes. My current solution: I fire up an alternate browser (currently iCab works perfectly and really loads fast).
By Hombre on Saturday, August 31, 2002 - 02:20 pm: Edit
Thanks Proctor, perhaps you can provide a URL for that browser or others can provide URLs for alternate browsers.
This appears to be an intermittent problem that only affects certain versions of certain Mac browsers. I've had individual reports of it before, but have never been able to determine the cause and it seems to come and go, usually disappearing during an archive. I will be archiving in a few moments which may temporarily relieve the problem. I don't have a Mac, so I've never seen it happen.
My guess is that the cause is one of the below:
1. Some Mac Browsers don't like long unordered lists.
2. Some Mac Browsers don't like deeply nested unordered lists.
3. A combination of 1 and 2.
As for a solution, all I can suggest is trying the alternate browser until I decide to change the software for the Chat Boards. I am hesitant to do so because the format of the Chat Boards is popular. However, it may be necessary eventually because of the Mac problems and it takes more resources/time to run/moderate/archive the Chat boards.
Sorry Dogster, my comment wasn't directed to you at all. You didn't come across to me as rude and impatient.
By Hombre on Saturday, August 31, 2002 - 02:41 pm: Edit
Other possibilities include mismatched tags or the browser doesn't like all the commenting being done.
I created a duplicate Mexico Chat test screen with a shorter list and shallow nesting. Any Mac users still having problems with the regular Mexico Chat freezing, reboot then come to this section and visit this link several times to see if your browser still crashes and please report results to me.
List Test for Mac

I don't have time to test right now, but this is the same problem I reported awhile back. It has been happening to me for about 6 or 7 weeks, I believe, and literally started overnight. I should have reported it right away, but assumed you had already gotten several e-mails on the subject by the time I expeienced it.
MacOS 9.1, IE 5.0, Cox Cable.
Come on Hombre, buy a Mac and learn what it is like to use a decent OS. (Stated with apologies to any Linux/UNIX users out there, and sympathy for those who have only endured Windoze.)

Suggested Browser to solve the Mac problem...
Try the following browser. Its currently free and solves the freeze and "slow-loading" problems of long lists found in the Chat sections. My typcial loading time for Mexico chat with Internet Exlporer 5.2 is over 3 minutes. When I use iCab it is about 4 seconds. There is something about Mac Internet Explorer and Chat lists that creates this problem.

What? Microsoft making a Mac product that still has bugs months after release? You can't possibly be serious.

So I guess it is a nesting issue as one of the threads has gotten very deep. (Nested = responses to responses to responses...id'd by starting very far to the right)
Now that I have that confirmed I guess I could move deeply nested theads and put a link to them.
Blame Jizz.

I moved the big nested thread off the main index, so you Mac'rs should be able to get to Mexico Chat OK now. If any of you still have problems with Mex chat freezing, please let me know.
By Dogster on Saturday, October 05, 2002 - 03:08 pm: Edit
Thanks. I never realized that you have a nesting instinct.

Hombre,
I wouldn't make any MAJOR changes until the mac users are upgraded to Mac OS X since Mac OS 9 is no longer being developed. Mac OS X is UNIX based, and almost all mac software has been (or soon will be) converted for use with OS X.

According to Apple itself, only 20% of the established Mac user base has switched to OS X.
There are lots and lots of horror stories from people who are trying to use OS X and a very large number of serious Mac users are planning to stick with OS 9 for a long, long while.
Also, Macintosh computers sold after 1/1/03 will no longer support OS 9, so there will be many, many Mac users with older machines who will be running OS 9 for many years. These people are not especially eager to throw away the computers they have been using reliably for years.(Apple just assumes everyone has the money and is eager to buy new Macs and of course update all that new software at very high $$ costs. Well... not everyone has the money or interest in buying new machines and new software).
Hopefully, within a year Apple will have worked out most of the kinks with OS X and then it will be a reliable OS. Currently, to install OS X you have to use two or three levels of CD-ROM disk updates and then cross your fingers. For an ongoing discussion and good information on the issues involved with OS X see the following Web site... http://www.macintouch.com

I actually picked up a Mac at a garage sale last year. I put it in my gallery next to a mood ring and a pet rock. I still need a Gia Pet and some Gingsu steak knives to complete the collection. Of course I would KILL for an unopened bottle of HiKarate... Milkman??
To clean up this thread and make it more manageable, perhaps Hombre would consider making a new thread just for
"ClubHombre.com: Welcome To Club Hombre: Support: Bug Reports: Macs:"

Dongringo ... now that's funny!
I admit was just trying to stir up the Mac people ... they are usually the world's easiest to set off on entertaining tangents about their beloved Macintosh and their homo-love for Steve Jobs.

By Sphere on Wednesday, October 09, 2002 - 09:25 am: Edit
I stand by my original statement, "don't make any MAJOR changes". Improve your reading comprehension before you mouth off. If hombre has an esay solution, that's great.
There's no point making MAJOR changes since it might cause new unforeseen problems for an operating system that has no future. It's the same as making MAJOR changes for people that still use Windows 97 and are having problems.
Why would you expect OS X to work on an seven year-old+ computer? How's your 8-track and divx?

Cigarillos? Now THAT's FUNNY!! I go to Havana for the finest cigars in the world, and you have the unmitigated gall to suggest I would flick my "cheap, drugstore bought, artificially FLAVORED, machine made" ash on your shag? Oh the humanity of it all.
You're lucky that TJ is so close at hand. How'd you do? Last night I just stayed home and stared at my Farrah Fawcet poster. She was looking mighty FINE by the glow of the lava lamp, so I rubbed out a quick one.

Cheryl Tiegs - boy does that bring back the memories.
Honestly, I don't know how you lads in S Cal manage. If I knew there was a latina teen only 20 minutes away?, I'd be ruined. Wait, that explains why the Mexico section of this board is so active.
Trip #3 to Havana is next week. I'm considering not flying there however. The guy in the red suit keeps appearing on my right shoulder saying: "Forsake my family and friends and all of my belongings, grab one of those rafts as the Cubans gets offa it, and set sail for Heavana". I could become a socialist.
If you don't hear from me anymore, it's because I've become the John Walker Lindh of hobbying.
