Honestly, toting around the big DSLR with multiple lenses and the huge flash is no fun and it can be risky. Everyone knows the price and resale value of photography equipment and there are thieves out there that have their eye on it.

Canon just put out the Canon G 1X which has a larger sensor then the typical compact and stuffed with a lot more power. It has a flash bracket so you can mount a speedlite and bounce the flash off the ceiling. Its just the right size and weight. From afar, it looks like a cheap camera...like some cheap film camera. It has a decent HD video camera inside so you dont have to take the camcorder with you.

All in all, the perfect travel camera.

I was about to buy a Sony NEX-5n, is this preferable to that?

By Keeper on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 - 12:10 am:  Edit

I like Canon a lot.. and I would like to upgrade my little SD770 IS and look at new Canons first (bless the optical stabilizer and my often shaky hands) but do not see enough bonus to jump to this G 1X.

Issues for me I see in this one:

Dimensions (W x H x D): 4.60 x 3.17 x 2.55 in. / 116.7 x 80.5 x 64.7mm
Weight: 19.0 oz. / 534g (Including the battery and memory card)
//That is just a wee bit to big and heavy to toss in my pocket for random outings without feeling a bit weighed down or at least obviously carrying a camera. (I have sworn myself off of butt packs and satchels until I hit 50)

Optical Zoom: 4x
//Is that enough being that it is 2 1/2 inches thick? My 3x optical pisses me off on occasion.

Flash Recycling Time: 5.0 seconds or less (battery voltage: 7.4 V)
//Is that to slow for me still? My SD770 IS is rated at 10.0 seconds or less and my stopwatch says around 7-7.5. This is my major issue I have with it.

Funky LCD Viewer
//Pros and Cons. Being able to move it around is useful, but slows getting a quick draw and shoot, adds width, and something to break.

I bought the NEX-5N and I love it.

It still looks like a big and bulky attraction getting pervert camera. I can't imagine taking that out at night to a club then trying to stuff it in your pocket. In the daytime no problem for those sexy candid pictures on the bed.

After much research and owning a Canon s95 myself I have found these 2 cameras the absolute best. You cannot find better pocket cameras for the price IMHO.

#2 http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-DMC-ZS3-Digital-Stabilized-Black/dp/B001QFZMCO The best for day shooting.. Flash not the best..

Both still fit nicely in your pockets.

At the risk of coming off 'low tech', has anyone tried the new iPhone 4s as their primary camera?

I snapped these pics w/out flash, and while I recognize they're not top quality, they're more than acceptable - especially for a smartphone.

I bought the earlier version G 11 a couple of years ago, and have been very happpy with it. Looks very similar to the G1x based on the photo in your link but perhaps lacking some of the bells and whistles. has great lens, 5x zoom, good low light photos, and actually does fit in the pocketcomfortably if youre wearing cargo pants. MIght be a bit bulky trying to hide it in a termas robe though.

The advantages of living in FL. Great price What the hell did she use to shave her pubes?

DG,

I used the 4S for some pics in Thailand, and was very happy with the results. The girls seem much more comfortable with cell phone cameras than regular cameras. I suppose they are so used to cell phones everywhere...when you whip out your phone in a club or a termas, no one seems to think twice.

These new cameras like the Canon mentioned here, the Sony NEX-5N and the Nikon 1 J1, seem like excellent smaller cameras, but just a bit too large to take into termas and clubs and to carry around in one's pocket. They are great for back in the room, and are a nice alternative to a full-fledged DSLR.

By Snooky on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 - 06:20 pm:  Edit

You'd figure it would be the opposite using a phone's camera and immediately be able to e-mail, tweet or post up to a website right in front of them

By Portege on Saturday, March 03, 2012 - 12:42 pm:  Edit

Well, any camera made by Sony is simply bad. Ive had some Sony compacts in the past and they dont seem to do the same job as a Canon or Nikon. I would say dont get the Sony. Nikon and Canon both are good camera models, but its a matter of preference. Some folks like the Nikon while others choose the Canon. No one ever chooses the Sony.

Compact cameras that you can fit in your pocket do not have the same battery life or mechanics. You can't bounce the flash off the ceiling with a compact camera so you are left with either using the existing light in the room or the flash on the camera. When you turn direct flash on someone, then it looks unflattering where as indirect flash bouncing off of the ceiling or a wall makes the picture more pleasing. Lets say you use existing light, then the camera has to bring up the ISO, you have to hold the camera steady and the photos become noiser and may even contain some blur.

The Canon G series is not a compact camera which can fit in your pocket, but it is more compact then a DSLR. It will take pictures which are much closer in quality, look and feel to the DSLR. I once had a Canon G9 a while back and was able to jam it into the front pocket of a baggy pair of jeans, but it was not comfortable and it looked like a big box was jammed in there. So its more of a camera to put into small bag or backpack. I saw some belt holsters for it being sold on Amazon which would make sense. The main attribute is the flash bracket on top which will allow you to use a Canon speedlite to bounce flash off the ceiling.

It used to be they just had the 400 and 500 series speedlights which were both hulking monsters not too easily traveled with. However, now they have the 320EX and 270 EXII which are more compact versions easier to lug around. Both you can tilt the flash-head towards the ceiling for a better effect.

http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/speedlite_flash_lineup/speedlite_320ex#Features

The Canon S100 is a truely compact camera and is probably the best camera out there which will fit into your pocket:

http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/digital_cameras/powershot_s100

The only two issues are no flash bracket so you will have to make due with direct flash and battery life. When you are zipping around a foreign place taking your pictures, you definitely need a spare battery.

The phone cameras are coming up in ability. Either this year or next they will introduce the Iphone 5 and Samsung Galaxy III. Both phones will have even better cameras then they do now not to mention fast quad core processors. Im not buying a new phone until the newer better phones come out.

"Well, any camera made by Sony is simply bad."

Seems you know as little about cameras as politics. Lots of Sony cameras have been bad, I agree, but the new Sony NEX-5N is quite nice. Obviously, some choose the Sony (see Bluestraveller's post above), and I see quite a few of them out on the street in NYC. I'm a Nikon guy, but to say all Sony cameras are bad is just plain ignorant. Like your similarly overstated political views.

By Portege on Saturday, March 03, 2012 - 11:11 pm:  Edit

Im not steering you wrong. How many professional photographers use a Sony? There are probably a few out there that do, but I only see Nikons and Canons in the hands of the pros.

Where in NYC are professional photographers using Sony? I didnt see them at the Yankees game, the fashion shows, the US Open, etc. All I saw was the long Canon white lenses and the long Nikon black lenses. No Sony in the group.

By Branquinho on Sunday, March 04, 2012 - 08:04 am:  Edit

Are you dense? The cameras you are talking about above are not professional cameras. They are glorified point-and-shoot cameras, compact and near-compact cameras...right?.

Who said anything about professional photographers? I said "on the streets," not in the studios. Lots of folks are using Sony cameras, and it's not just Japanese tourists

Of course, when you turn to the pros, they are all using Nikons and Canons (with a few Leicas thrown in), but you were writing about consumer cameras, not pro models. And in that range, Sony finally has a decent option or two. I still prefer the Nikons and Canons, but to claim the Sony only makes bad cameras is false.

It's one thing to argue that Nikon and Canon make better consumer cameras than Sony. It's another to say Sony only makes "bad cameras" The first is an arguable point; the second, which is what you said, is false.

By Portege on Sunday, March 04, 2012 - 10:43 am:  Edit

Sony does make DSLR's which were basically derived from Minolta/Konica which it bought in 2006. Minolta and Konica had been making cameras since the 1920s. I have seen some good reviews about the Sony Alpha line and the pictures Ive seen coming from the pros do look impressive. However, I do not see many professionals whipping out a Sony Alpha at any event I have been to or seen on television. Turn on the television and how many pros do you see with a Sony Alpha?

There were a few polls I found on the internet which confirmed what I believed:

http://digital-photography-school.com/forum/digital-cameras/8-poll-what-brand-digital-camera-do-you-use-49.html

http://www.picturecorrect.com/tips/facebook-poll-what-brand-of-camera-do-you-use/

http://www.stormfront.org/forum/t863628/

The plurality of photographers tend to like Canon the most and Nikon comes second. Canon and Nikon both take good pictures, but its a matter of preference in the mechanics of the camera and the actual picture taken. I do think they take different types of pictures. Canon's pictures seem a bit warmer to my eye.

I really dont know anything about Olympus, Panasonic, or other brands because I have never picked one up. However, I do know about Sony compacts because I have owned several in the past.

My first digital camera was this large Kodak back in the late 90s and then I switched to Sony compacts. I owned a few of those. My friend had a cheap Canon compact and when I compared my photos from the Sony to the Canon...the Canon compact blew the Sony away.

If you look on the website www.consumerreports.org, there are 11 recommended subcompact point and shoot cameras. 6 are Canon, 3 are Nikon, 1 is Casio and 1 is Panasonic. There are 3 recommended compact models in which 3 are Nikon and 1 is Canon.

The cameras given the coveted "Best Buy" by Consumer Reports were:
- Canon Powershot SX130IS
- Nikon Coolpix S9100
- Nikon Coolpix L110
- Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS8
- Nikon Coolpix P500
- Panasonic Lumix GF2K
- Canon Rebel T1i, T2i, T3i
- Nikon D3100
- Pentax K-r
- Canon Powershot G12
- Nikon Coolpix P7000

The only category where Sony earned a "recommended" was with DSLR and DSLR-like type cameras which are essentially re-branded Minoltas/Konicas. Canon and Nikon dominated the ratings. There were also a few Panasonics they seemed to like a lot too.

So, yes, I do feel that all Sony compact cameras are bad and my advice would be to stay away. I dont like the pictures which come from them and consumer magazines tend to shy away. Most polls suggest that people favor Canon and Nikon with a small minority favoring Sony. In regards to their DSLR Alpha line, Sony does have some positives, but I would buy a Canon or Nikon dslr over Sony.

Thats just my opinion and preference. If I had to have just one camera, I would probably take a Canon G-series.

I have several friends that are professionals and some of them have picked up the NEX-5N. In fact, that is the reason I got it based on the recommendation of pro friends. Note: they have not dumped their other gear for the Sony but it is another option. Aside from the fact that it is so much smaller than a DSLR, there are 3 very important features in this camera that make it ground breaking.

1. It is incredible in low light. Perhaps better than any other camera on the planet. It supports 25600 ISO which means 6400 ISO is not grainy at all.
2. It has a panarama mode which allows you to take a wide photo. It takes multiple photos and stitches them together on a fly and you really cannot tell. It is amazing.
3. It is the first camera to take HD video at 60 fps.

Before this camera, I had a Panasonic Lumix with 16X zoom and it was a really good camera too. I actually had a photography class in Brazil and I was the only one with a point and shoot and my photos were consistently better than many in the class. Not better than all but many. That said, if I wanted to take really good photos in a terma, I would bring my new Sony because it is so good in low light and ambient light.

BTW. Do the girls still let you take photos in the cabines? What if you give them a little tip? What % of them say yes? Back in the day, not allowing photos used to be a deal breaker.

BT

60 fps HD video??? gonna take one helluva lot of horsepower to edit that many frames per second, but man will it make for some amazing quality video, especially in slow motion and/or low light. Have you tried uploading to YouTube in that quality? Does it playback any better?s
I found this review of the video in low light, which looks pretty impressive in low light slow mo:http://youtu.be/A4R3B8CinYA?hd=1

That'll also fill up a memory card at least twice as fast. What size sticks you got for that thing?

Found some low light sample pics online too:
http://img.photographyblog.com/reviews/sony_nex_5n/sample_images/sony_nex_5n_73.jpg
Amazing. Hardly grainy at all with an ISO 3200 at night.

BT do you have a wide angle lens for it?

BT,

I took pics in the cabine at L during my last visit. I just brought the camera with me and asked, and both said OK. No tip offered or requested. I don't ask in advance of going to the cabine, as it seems many will say no pics if you ask up front but will allow then once in the room. If a girl says "no" in the room, I don't make a big deal of it.

By Bluestraveller on Tuesday, March 06, 2012 - 12:12 pm:  Edit

I bought the 18-55 and the 55 - 210 lenses to go with it. The 18 mm is pretty good but what is much more amazing is the panorama mode which allows incredible wide photos.

I have not spent much time doing the video although I did make some test videos at 60 fps and it obviously looks amazingly more real than 30 fps. I am using a 32 GB chip which also came with camera.

Yes the low light it amazing without a tripod even.

BD,

I think I am getting an itch to try out all my new camera equipment. I'm thinking dupla. HAHAHA.

A dupla so you can use the panoramic mode? kkkkkkkkkkkkkk

By Bluestraveller on Wednesday, March 07, 2012 - 05:29 pm:  Edit

If I were guessing, I would say that a dupla at C would run R$820 for 40 minutes not including drinks etc. Let's round up to a R$1000 which is $588. Best price I am seeing on Amazon for the camera is $698 with the 18-55mm lens. So I guess Centaurus wins.

By Bwana_dik on Wednesday, March 07, 2012 - 10:12 pm:  Edit

But you get to keep the camera. With your C session you get some memories which will probably fade (and may be so-so to begin with) and, if you're unlucky, an STD. I'll go with the camera.
