The short version of this post is:

I am in Panama right now but wondering how Las Colombianas working outside their country compare with those that work in their homeland - but probably not home city?

The long version is:

Experiencing some "I need a vacation!" moments at work I booked with air-miles on short notice - so I saved six fairly recent reports to disk for reading en-route and while here.

I landed Tuesday and still haven't read all six reports. I've been out-and-about though - checking out various venues. I'll report on them post-trip - if not before then.

Right now though I am asking those of you that have been to Cali, Colombia and either here or San Jose, Costa Rica, whether you notice much difference in the attitude of Las Colombianas in their home country vs those one can find, in plenitude in these two places.

In '05, before I knew of CH, I visited San Jose several times - and reported extensively about my newbie experiences on a competing forum that I learned of while down there. (The CRT forum - under the same username (or maybe as Chica Chaser)).

I found that, in San Jose, most of Las Colombianas were prettier than the local Ticas. More than a few were gorgeous. Unfortunately, in my experience, almost without exception they were cold fish; Ice Princesses.

Talking to their sisters here in Panana, in El Veneto mainly, I get the same vibe from them. I sampled one, at Golden Time (a massage place) and Julie (#73) was the same way. Pleasantly professional; no BBBJ; no kissing.

I'm just wondering whether it's markedly easier to experience something closer to a GFE in Cali?

My air-miles flight is booked to return from Cali but it will cost me $450 to fly there one-way. Three times what the trip down and back from Vancouver cost me.

I share your opinion that Colombians tend to be more attractive than many of the other Latinas.

Although I haven't been to Cali, I have been to Bogota, Cartegena, and Medellin as well as Panama City, Costa Rica, and other places where Colombians travel to work and I can say that it's widely recognized, as well as my personal experience, that the Colombians in their home country tend to provide much better service.

Your best shot for more passionate service is probably the freelancers at Veneto, Habanos, and La Bodeguita, but you might have to look longer and harder to find the good ones, and they still will probably be less service oriented on average than what you could more easily find in Colombia.

As for what you should do, I can't really say. Medellin or even Cartegena would be better for a first time Colombia visit. I'm not sure paying a lot more to end your trip in Colombia would be worth the cost, particularly to Cali, but the longer you could spend there, the easier it would be to justify.

My first trip to Colombia was to Cali, and I was impressed. One chica I met was so GFE that I came back to see her on my way to Cartagena (even though it was quite out of the way), and then flew her up for a weekend in Medellin. She said Cali was dangerous, though, so you have to know how (where) to stay out of trouble. She wants to marry me, but that's just because I'd be her ticket out of poverty (she's around half my age and speaks zero English).

Others chicas were memorable, too, in terms of attitude, despite the handicap that my minimal Spanish did not allow much of the verbal interaction that contributes to GFE.

Hunterman I'll check that site out. You should bookmark www.livemocha.com for learning Spanish - or Portuguese. It's a great site and is free last I used it. Free IF you return the favor others do of helping those learning your native language. A tit for tat exchange so-to-speak.

Pimsleur audio (99% audio lessons; 1% text) are GREAT too - but expensive.

If you haven't tried LiveMocha be sure to. It really helped me learn Brazilian Portuguese - though I did use Pimsleur at the same time so who knows which helped more.

I'm curious why you settled on Cali over MDE and Cartagena.
Cali can be a worthwhile place, but the mongering in MDE and Cartagena is much easier to navigate for a first time visitor. All three cities are generally safe if you stay in the nice areas and take the usual precautions.

Oh and yes if you're a Rio enthusiast, you might be disappointed with the performance of girls in Colombia, Panama, CR, et al. I like those places alot, but they're a definite step down from Rio.

If you're serious about Salsa in Cali, I can give you alot of information. It's a fantastic place to visit if you're into Afro-Latin Music and Dance.

Actually I visited Colombia in January of '08. Three nights in Bogota; about five or six in Medellin; one in Manizales; and nearly two weeks in Pereira.

I would have stayed longer in Medellin but, as usual, I travel day to day and had the bad luck of being in town when there was some big convention sucking up most of the affordable hotel rooms. I managed two nights at Medellin Mansion when someone cancelled but then, being homeless and unable to find a vacancy, caught a bus westward.

I wrote a long report about that but lost it due to a computer malfunction. Just couldn't bring myself to re-write it - being as there was already so much info about Colombia.

So my interest in Cali is because I haven't been there yet.

I do have an interest in learning Salsa. Partly because my body kind of moves, of its own accord, to a good beat - and partly (mostly) hoping it would be a way to meet non-pros that would be happy to teach a middle aged but tall and slim blonde Canadian some moves - on the floor and, ohala que si, en la cama.

So yes! Post some info here about where I might find merengue and/or salsa lessons.

By the way I am at PTY airport right now waiting for my flight. Like YVR in Canada, and SEA in Washington, PTY airport has free WiFi. I wish the same could be said for all American airports.

Ok. Here are my thoughts on the Cali Salsa scene. First, you generally need time to immerse yourself in it. It's not like going to a Latin Club in the US where you just dance with everyone. Even though the women in Cali are generally nice (more open to Gringo's than in MDE), groups are the order in the Salsa clubs.

Second, the style of dancing in Cali is fairly unique. Most of the World dances either Cuban ("Casino") Style or Puerto Rican/NY style (or cross-body lead style). Cali style is sort of in a category of its own. I don't know your experience level, but Cali is not really an ideal place to learn Salsa if you want a style you can use universally.

There are dozens of studios there, but only a few that tourists typically go to -- Son de Luz, Swing Latino, and RuCafe. The first two teach pure Cali Style. Swing Latino has a nicer studio and more hot young girls in classes, but I personally like the teachers at Son de Luz more. Andres and Jenny are both fantastic. I haven't been to Rucafe, but it may interest you more because they teach alot of Cuban Style which might appeal to you more since it's more common.

If you're serious, I would advice that you pick one of these three studios and sign up for a few group and private lessons. Talk to the other students and the teachers about going out to a club in the evening. This will be a great entre into the scene.

If you're really serious about the dance scene, contact a guy named Ara who has a hotel "Posada Salsa Boutique." His hotel is in a great area (Penon) and he will help you even if you don't stay there (probably not recommended for mongering!) He knows everything Salsa-related in Cali.

"The" club for salsa in Cali is a club called--what else--Salsa. Entrada is (I think) 5K or something reasonable, with a two-drink minimum. Meet a girl through one of the web sites like ColombianCupid.com (amazing how sexy some of the Calenas are) or a casa, take her there to teach you salsa. I'm not sure how well you'd fare showing up there solo, although not everyone was in couples or coupled-seeming groups.
