I only spent three nights on the North Coast, all in Sosua. Two of the nights were at the Hotel New Garden. My third night was at the Casa Valeria. If I had stayed longer in Sosua, I probably would have spent at least one more night there. New Garden was $55/night, I got a deal for $50 for a luxury room at Casa Valeria because it would have otherwise gone unfilled.
The Hotel New Garden was full of hobbyists and is probably better for those that want to hang out with others. I preferred the low key setting of the Casa Valeria. The wifi was also faster and more reliable, but that might just have been because fewer people were using it. Drawbacks at the Casa Valeria that might be significant for some people are that they have no in-room phones and no desks. I was able to move a bedside table in front of a low seated chair, but the desk at New Garden was much more comfortable. Breakfast was not included, but I got a nice breakfast at Rocky's instead for 150 DOP. I can't say how the food is at Casa Valeria, but the restaurant looked nice.
I didn't bring a lady back during my one night stay, but the Casa Valeria is guest friendly. They have a guard stationed inside the gates from 8pm until the morning.
