I stayed at Aloha Sol when I failed to make a reservation at Hodelpa Centro Plaza for a Tuesday and the rooms were all taken. The hotel is half a block away on the south side of Calle del Sol.

The rooms were as nice as the ones I had at Hodelpa Centro Plaza for about 1600 pesos ($32 US, $17 less than Hodelpa), but they didn't have an in-room safe. Also, they are in the process of remodeling part of the hotel, so the elevator (I only saw one) was out of commision. Even when they do get it working, it appears that it does not service the ground floor, so at a minimum you'll still need to walk up the stairs to the second level.

I was happy with the price, service and breakfast here. The only thing I did not confirm was whether this place is guest-friendly. I would assume so as long as you are relatively discreet, but I cannot say with any certainty.

The sign above was in the bathroom, anyone know what it means?

Hola. RT here.

Guest-friendly? Just as Vlad put it. Don't flaunt it, and just walk upstairs as if it were no big deal. I asked the bellhop on check-in, and confirmed through an actual test later that night.

I also asked about the sign in the bano. If you steal towels, you pay for 'em.

I arrive in Santiago at 2:15am Wed night/Thurs morn. I'll probably leave Santiago the next day. Would it be better to stay Aloha Sul or a cabana? If cabana, any recommendations including address for me to give cab driver? Do I just show up and pay for the room from the airport?

Vlad, man, that sure is a weird time to arrive. My advice is to stay for 1 or 2 days in Santiago, because IMO, the hobbying scene is better & more varied than Sosua. But if you're intent on staying for such a short time, then you're better off in a hotel. If you don't have a girl with you, then try Hotel Platino. Nice place, good rates. Cabanas are available but only for 2/3 hour time periods (as far as I know), and to stay longer might end up costing you more than a hotel stay.

Vlad,
What airline, Jet Blue?

By Vladimir on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 - 12:41 pm:  Edit

Sorry for the 6 year late reply, Nastyworld, but it was American Airlines.

The Aloha Sol added a casino since my visit years ago. They also raised the room rates. Prices were starting at $83 in December, so I stayed at two places I hadn't been before that had rooms in the $50 range. They were the Hotel Los Jardines and Hotel Platino. I chose those two because of the price and I heard they were guest friendly and recommended by other hobbyists. I'm about to report on them now.

Aloha Sol is mentioned in 2014/03 Camaro1257 - Camaro's View of Santiago (Dominican Republic)

quote:

The Aloha Sol Hotel is a nice hotel with staff that was very cordial and helpful. The WI-FI and air-condition worked well. There was a safe in the closet but I made no attempt to use it. The room had a comfortable queen bed and an 18 inch flat screen TV. The primary problem I had was with the key card that had to be swiped multiple times before the door would open.
