Cafetería Sofía

Most Cuba travellers know of Cafetería Sofía, but since it is not a true pick-up spot in and of itself I've never seen mention of the place. It is an open sided cafe-style venue located on La Rampa in the Vedado section of Havana. With its view of the street it is a good place to kick back, have a beer, and people watch. I use Sofía as a home base, coming back for a quiet beer in between visits to the other clubs and discos. La Zorra y El Cuervo--a great latin jazz nightclub--is next door[no ho's], as is the Tikoa disco[too many ho's, IMHO].

A decent live band plays traditional Cuban music in the early afternoon and then after dark, and will pass around a tip jar after sets. Chicken, small pizzas, and Cuban sandwiches are available. However, the food sucks. How the government can screw up a simple sandwich I'll never know.

As for women, they are there but definately tend toward the lower end of the quality scale. A few girls are there most of the time and appear to be "managed" by a friendly black dude that hangs around for no other apparent reason. You will see others passing by on the street again and again. There seems to be some unwritten rules in effect. Some girls can enter and hang out all day, while others seem to need an invitation to get in. Whether this has to do with the "manager" or the police, or both, I don't know. For these low-enders ST is about $25 - $30 but you absolutely must establish this in advance. And ST would only be practical if your casa nearby.

Juker, that's a great littel corner on a busy intersection of LaRampa. I've hung out there myself to grab a beer and enjoy the flavor of a Havana evening.
YMMV, but I've never had ANY success with the talent around there - they all seem to commercialized and hardened to me. The only time I did walk a chica from there to my casa, she asked for the money up front the MOMENT we got into my room. Of course, within 30 seconds she was back on the streets again.
Does that corner bear some closer inspection next trip?

I was there several times and though that the food was decent by Cuban standards. I really liked the band and shared a few beers with them to talk about soccer. Cristal beers go for a dollar there. There were several freelancers there but they were on the older side. The place is open air and has small palm trees surrounding it so it is quite peaceful. There is also a great jazz place next door.
