One of the things that most will realize upon going to Cuba is that most of the discos are more expensive than most discos in the United States. The bars have reasonable prices but the discos are a fortune.

Some other major differences are as follows:
1. There is no major area for discos and many of them are spread throughout the city in odd areas.

2. Almost all of them have live Cuban music and some have Cabaret shows. The crackdown has tried to make the discos appear to be live music venues and not pick-up joints.

3. There are many girls whom hang outside the disco who want desperately to get in. They will almost always pay for themselves. Unless you like them and are interested in purchasing their services, don't pay for them...you're wasting your time and it will set you back 15-20 bucks.\

4. Lots of Haitian looking guys with lots of jewelry and Japanese style silk shirts will accompany groups of girls to get them in. These are the girls pimps and they take most of their money and beat them afterwards. Avoid these chicks, no matter how fine they are. If one of these guys approaches you about getting a girl, tell them you can manage on your own.

5. None of these girls speak a word of English. If your Spanish is not at an intermediate level, you will have a lot of difficulty in Havana. No one is there to help you and everyone is after your dollars.

One way that I cut down on the cost of drinks at discos, was to buy a bottle of rum and a bottle of coke. I think I paid 6 or 7 dollars. All of the nightclubs I went to I made cuba libres. Even the overpriced Macumba allowed this. Pay as you go along. DO NOT start any tabs.

Update as of Mar 2010: now a girl can get in all kinds of hell if she's seen even talking to a gringo, so that's why the clubs are critical for meeting girls.

Before you swing out to clubs, make sure you have the following:

1) Pen & paper
2) Scrap of paper with your casa address written on it.

Once you've located your girl for the night and settled on the price, DO NOT LEAVE WITH HER.

Instead, give her 5 CUC and the scrap of paper with your casa address. Then leave on your own...tell her to find you at the casa.
