The food in Cuba is horrible. There is some decent food in Barrio Chino and at some of the hotels but don't expect any fruit, vegetable or beef. Chicken, beans, rice and fried plantains are everywhere....as is bad pizza. I lost 8 pounds in one week and had the runs twice.

The food in Cuba can be great if you know where to go. I gain weight in Havana. Here's a week's worth of my favorites:
EL ALJIBE on 7ma Ave in Miramar has some of the best food in Havana and the house specialty all-you-can-eat chicken dinner is delicious and a great deal at $12 bucks.
GRINGO VIEJO paladar on Calle 21 near A in Vedado.
LE CHANSONNIER paladar on Calle J near 15 in Vedado. Get the duck and/or the chef's salad.
HOSTAL DE DONA CARMELA paladar in La Cabana across the bay behind El Moro castle. Excellent seafood. Romantic backyard dining. Always crowded so make a reservation via a hotel concierge or be prepared to wait.
BUFFET AT MELIA HABANA hotel in Miramar. $20 bucks all you can eat vegas-style buffet. good one also at Melia Cohiba in Vedado.
TRATTORIA MARAKAS calle O 1 block off La Rampa on groundfloor of Horizontes Hotel in Vedado. Good inexpensive real Italian pizzas ($5) and pastas ($4).
CAFE TV in courtyard of FOCSA building in Vedado. A good cheeseburger for about $3.
BARRIO CHINO tons of good $5 meals to be had in chinatown.

Just returned from the island. Excellent Italian restaurant run by Italians called Neptuna y Prado located at the the end of the prado away from the Malecon near Parque central. High quality and reasonable prices.I ate there 7 of my 9 nights there.
