Dajao Restaurant & Bar
Arzobispo Nouel #51
off of Calle Duarte
Colonial Zone, Santo Domingo
809-686-0712
I found Dajao over the weekend, while I was wandering around the Colonial Zone looking like a tourist. The restaurant is one block off of El Conde (the main walking/shopping street), so it is easy to find. As a point of reference, it is only a two block walk from the Hard Rock (five minutes, tops).
The joint is definitely not standard Dominican issue. It was clean, all done up in white and metal, air-conditrioned, and playing (at a low volume!) American music.
The menu had all sorts of fish and seafood, at prices ranging from 250 to 900 pesos for main dishes, and soups & appetizers from 90-400 pesos. I had the sopa de mariscos (seafood soup) and then the lambi enchilada (Conch in a chili sauce). Both dishes were delicious. The portions were average-sized, but I left full and happy.
The total bill came to RD$592.20 (including the 29% taxes here). Conch is real expensive back home, but here, it is dirt cheap – a bonus for us conch fans! They gladly called a taxi for me after I paid.
In a place where food is either dirt cheap (and tastes like it), or more expensive than it should be, it was a pleasure sitting down in an air conditioned restaurant to a well-prepared, tasty meal for only $20. I would eat here again.
