Is there a specific reason to go there? With a population less than 2000 it probably isn't much of a place to go for anything!. Stick to Mexico City, unless your going on day trips for the volcanos, ruins/etc....

absolutely safe, i have buddies that go there regularly, for me just occasionally but i've been there twicw in the past 2 weeks

I agree with Doc and I rarely fail to take a break in Bar Zaca when I'm in TJ. However, it is a different scene during the week than on weekends. Weekends draw a hip young crowd from all over Baja and even S.D. - place resembles sort of a college canteen at the University of Rock and Roll Diablo. It gets to overflowing and very interesting.

Weekdays it is quiet so some of its old time denizens will be more in evidence - e.g. rateros and drug addicts and other down and outers. That doesn't make it a bit unsafe, but it is considerably less lively with a crowd of losers standing in for the energetic weekend crowd. Zaca used to be loser and whack job central all the time, but a few years ago it started transforming into a hip scene along with at least one other zona bar that was once exclusive terrain for down and outers, Dragon Rojo.

If you don't get too toasted, keep in mind that holding the amount of mota contained in a single joint is NOT A CRIME anywhere in Mexico (effective August 2009). Not to say it is legal to smoke weed in public or to buy it or sell it in public, but the decriminalization of possession of small personal amounts of virtually all narcotics in Mexico is designed to keep the cops off your ass. This was an anti-police corruption statute more than a mercy for small possessors statute.

So if you walk out of there with half a tokay in your pocket, do not let any cop who picks up the scent tell you a crime was committed and you have to pay a fine. Just say respectfully, "I believe this is a legal amount, let's talk to a judge" (in my weak spanish: "Con respecto, creo que esa cantidad de mota es legal [laygal], tenemos que hablar con el juez), and you'll walk away without too much further hassle, and your money and tokay still in your pocket. But whatever you do, do not purchase any drugs from a street vendor - that will get you a trip to the judge unless you pay the mordida.
