Hotel Nelson

Is this place any good?

By Diego on Tuesday, November 28, 2000 - 05:37 pm:  Edit

I stayed there once. Took some chick from AB there after closing time a few years back. It is a hotel from the early 60's. The gave me a room on the North side on about the 4th floor. The view was kind of interesting, but you will have some trouble sleeping because of the Mariachi music in the plaza below. I don't know about rooms higher up, or on other sides of the hotel.

Salsa Boy,

The Nelson is noisy on the plaza side. The rooms are nice though. I paid $42 for a room w/ t.v., hot water and fairly clean. The elevator is pretty scary because it jumps. It is safer to take the stairs if your room is not on the top floor. Usually stay on floors 2 or 3.
No problem bringing a chica back to the room. They also have a bar with cheap beer and drinks and a separate restaurant on the street level.
Overall, the rooms are clean and nicer than the San Jorge and many others in the zona.

Just curious, but do the rooms have AC?

By Marcopolo on Sunday, August 24, 2003 - 03:05 am:  Edit

Desertcoyote and anybody; i stayed there early August for one night. think i was charged $43-45=, the room was big, bath room ok w/ow, NO AC, just fan on overhead,no fridge. luckily it wasn't a hot night. don't think outside noise is an issue. didn't try to bring a girl for the night, so don't know how the management would react, have the feeling they wouldn't mind, just be discret. was in a hurry to find a place to crash, that's why ended up here, guess, otherwise i would keep looking around.///

The Nelson also has interior rooms for $30, but you have to ask. No street noise, obviously.

Try to stay a little bit away from the elevators because they make moderate noise. 401 is an interior room near the elevator.

I must be a sound sleeper, I stayed in 301, no problem with noise at all.

Stayed here with 2 buddies on Saturday January 28th. The charged us $62.00 for one night. Overall a good experience for what it was worth. 3 single sized beds, TV with DVD and plenty of towels. Placed looked kind of old and shower handles needed a good cleaning, bt it did the job. We stayed in 422 and the elevator was broke. Ate at the restaurant twice and it was good both times. My buddy even got a haircut at the barber shop inside of the hotel and they did a good job. Great location, right across from Hard Rock. They are at hotelnelson@hotmail.com. Or 685-43-02. Don't forget when outside of TJ to dial 011-52-664 before.

Now I've never stayed at this place but a couple of wks ago, while walking from the border over to the zona I stopped in for a few beers. I had a blast. I had been in the bar before but never when there were people there. They had the pro bowl on one tv and futbol on the other tv and before I knew, a couple of hrs had passed and I had a good buzz. Definitely going back and possibly thinking about an overnight at this place. Its location is perfect.

I've heard nothing but complaints about this hotel from so many TJ trip buddies. I stayed here a few years ago, on and off, but this recent visit to the Hotel Nelson was nothing short of a sheer disappointment. recently, I got a room here about two months ago while looking for an overnight stay before traveling en route to San Felipe.

Arrived late one night and enquired about the cheapest room, which was a single room going for $30.000. The two guys in the front lobby, one the hotel desk clerk, the other one a plain clothes security guard told me the only thing they had available was the double suite, with two beds, which amounted to twice the price. Hmmmmm... I thought, how can all the single-bed rooms be taken when this was mid-week?

I declined and began to walk out when one of the guys called me back and said something to the fact that he "just discovered" a single room which has "just been cleaned and ready." Mind you, this was 10:00 at night. I didn't know the housekeepers worked that late? Not! Another obvious scam. So, I took the single room, which was up on the second floor. The shower's hot water didn't work, which meant I had to have a cold shower, the TV was nothing but static on every channel, the room smelled of a musty stale smell, there was one tiny small towel which was the bath towel, I'm assuming.

Be careful of this place, as both employees are scammers. When I brought a chica back to my room, they stopped me in the lobby and said I need to pay $10.00 for the female visit. I gave a deep disgusted sigh and without further protesting, paid the desk clerk for the "privilege" of kindly allowing me to bring a hooker back to such a fine establishment. Without further argument, I threw the $10.00 note on the desk in an obvious disgusted manner and called the guy a "ratero."

Although I argued a little bit, but not much, I didn't want to make a scene for two reasons: 1) I didn't want to embarrass myself in front of my whore and, 2) there were two cops sitting in the lobby watching TV. Why invite trouble and make things worse? I know of others who were similarly scammed by employees of this hotel. It's better to walk across the street and check in at the Hotel Enva. No TV, yet rooms are cleaner and more comfortable than the Hotel Nelson. Oh, and the staff at Hotel Enva won't scam you when you bring a chica back either.

The Hotel Nelson is definitely NOT recommended for the traveling monger.

Regards,

Master Bates.

Good point Metalhead, yes, we are. Sonora is now my new found destination. Ironically, I just got off the phone with a friend before I logged on telling him of my latest trip to TJ with has now become a run-of-the-mill average convenience, if nothing else.

While many people I personally know are true die-hard fans of the Zona and still swear by the service TJ has to offer, I, for one, have truly lost the mongering desire, not to mention the mongering adventures in seeking out true GFE activities.

As for Citlali, I actually saw her about two months ago, still standing on the corner, she was wearing a very thin yellow see-through dress and was five months pregnant, yet still working. Another monger also saw her and in-boxed me about her sightings.
