Hi hombres,
I was in TJ this past sat. I decided to take the I-15 instead of driving down the I-5, never hit one traffic jam(not even one slow spot 75 -85MPH all the way).
If any of you hombres hate driving on the I-5, try the I-15, a few more miles but much much faster.
northbound didn't look so good at the inspection station(backed up about 2 miles) I drove back on the 5. So if you live in L.A., try the l-l5. Have a good drive...

That's the I-805, man.
If you take I-15 from LA, you would have to go on the 94, 60, or I-10 East, then I-15 south from Ontario or Corona, then thru Temecula and Escondido(about 50 extra miles!) - or take 78 East from Oceanside to I-15 junction in Escondido(about 25 extra miles).
I-805(from LA) splits off from I-5 in Sorrento Valley, and either route is about the same distance to the border.
The fact is, I-805 is usually no faster that I-5, and there are certain times when it is worse.

What's the best way to find I-15 North from the border in San Ysidro?

The I-15 has really bad rush hour traffic from the inland communities. Weekdays, avoid going south between 6:30-8:30 AM and going north 4:30-7:00 PM especially on Fridays.
Going south on the I-15, you can get onto the I-805 or I-5. I think the traffic is usually a little better on the 805.
Ootie, you can get on the I-15 north either on the I-5 or I-805. It is a little shorter getting on from the 805.

Ootie
When driving north on 805 its about 10 miles to 15. watch the signs...where 15 and 805 meet its CA 15 not I-15. Changes to I-15 at the 8

I would extend Poppabear's warning to include avoiding the I-15 southbound in evening rush hour, as well. Especially on Fridays, it can sometimes be almost as bad as northbound. The I-5 is almost always the fastest route southbound in the evenings, at least as far as San Diego county is concerned. It isn't good, it is just the best of the bad.

sorry gents.
I forgot to put the day and time(sat. 12-2 p.m.,I always hit traffic on the I-5). I don't know about the rest of the times.

That is STILL bad advice.
The ONLY time when taking I-15 will beat I-5 is if there is some kind of serious accident that you know about in advance. But, of course, you can't predict when an accident will occur. This is why the traffic reports in LA are pretty worthless - all they do is tell you WHY traffic is slow - it is somewhat rare when you can actual avoid problems by taking an alternate route... ESPECIALLY when considering taking I-15 vs. I-5.
Unless you are coming from east of Pomona(maybe Covina)it just doesn't make any sense to consider I-15 vs. I-5.
But hey, what the fuck do I care? Go ahead and waste your time.

Hi everyone,
Since Diego knows ....
I did a side by side test. I measured the exact miles(I-15 VS.I-5).
CAR:toyota tundra with factory wheels(changing your tire size can change the speedo and odometer).
ROAD CONDITION:nice day and night(could see miles ahead).
STARTING POINT:downtown l.a.(had to make a quick stop at work).
I-15: Left at 1:15 p. m. took 10fwy to the 60fwy, avg. 65-75m.p.h.(ALAWYS DRIVING WITH THE FLOW). 35 min. later I'm on the I-15, merged in the fast lane and 80-85 ALL THE WAY!!!(MOSTLY 85)I was exiting at the last U.S. exit by 3:30p.m.
RESULT:man I love this freeway...... 155.6 MILES 2hrs. 15min.
I-5: pulling out of the parking lot at 9:50p.m. GOODBYE MEXICO..until next time my LOVE.
avg. speed was 65-75 m.p.h(ALWAYS DRIVING WITH THE FLOW). I was passing downtown(starting point) by 12:15a.m.
RESULT:132.1 MILES, 2hrs. 25min
The 15fwy was faster because the posted speed limit is 70, so everybody is driving 80+.The difference was only 23.5 miles. the 15 was longer but faster. the 5fwy is usally bad when I drive to tj(return is pretty good)
Hey Diego , there you have it. If I ever see you I'll buy you a beer and tell you all about.
just show then you browneye and run away!
Hey Redongdo stop throwing gas in the fire...
The rest of you gentlemen, have a nice and safe trip.

So, you make one comparison, and that's it? Not very scientific either... it's like you're comparing apples and oranges in that little study of yours.
All I can say is your little non-comparative study "doesn't prove beans".
Anyway, looking at the map, it is hard to believe that it is only 23.5 miles further on the I-15(how far is it from the I-10/Route 60 & I-15 junctions in East Ontario to downtown LA?).... E. LA, Monterrey Park, Rosemead, El Monte, West Covina, Covina, Pomona, Clairmont, Montclair, Upland, Ontario... I made that ride a few times, and it always seemed like a LOT more than 23.5 miles to me... also, the scale at MapsOnUs shows that it's about 35 miles... like I said, your study isn't very scientific... it reminds of those guys who sponser a "poll"... isn't it funny that the result always turns out in their favor?

Oh, by the way, since it's about 70+ miles r/t further going the I-15, you'll have to stop for gas more often... and I noticed you didn't take that into account in your time comparisons either.
...and if you make this trip often enough, you'll be putting a few thousand miles more on your vehicle... at $.35/mile(the current government reimbursement rate) you will be spending about $25 extra every time you go to TJ from LA - if you take I-15 rather than I-5.
Dude - not only are you wasting your time - you are also wasting money.

Hey! wait a second! 23.5 miles was the round trip difference? BULLSHIT. It is 70 miles... LOOK AT THE MAP!

I live near the 91, 1/2 way between the 55/I5 and the I15, the mileage to the border is within 5 miles (I15 is 5 miles longer). Which route I take depends on what time of day I leave. Between 2pm and 7pm you can foreget the west bound 91, it is a parking lot.
Late evening you can run the I5 at 80 mph and not get stopped. I15 has fewer accidents. I15 is better if you hit San Diego between 4pm and 6pm because the number of companies on each route is fewer.
I15 from SD is better from 3pm to 7pm because the INS check point is quicker.
All in all I15 is faster
| By Diego on Saturday, January 12, 2002 - 09:58 am: Edit |
694me;
Of course, for you I-15 is faster(and possibly better overall). Each individual situation will be different. For me it is even better to take I-15(I live in the Inland Empire)... however, it is clear that it is NOT better from Los Angeles.
Look - you have to look at the WHOLE situation - not just travel time on a full tank.
Now, I've been looking at the map a lot more closely, and I will have to admit that maybe it is only about 50 miles further round trip on I-15 vs. I-5(from Downtown LA). However, I still stand by my assertion that overall impact to your time is greater by using I-15(gassing up, more time maintaining your vehicle, etc.). Additionally, it costs about $15-$20 more each round trip on I-15.
Downtown;
I've figured out a 2 step approach to getting you laid for free every time you drive down to TJ:
1) Take the I-5, instead of the I-15, and you will save $20 each trip.
2) Park your car in the new parking lot across from Playboy/Amor Latino, instead of the American Lots - this will save you $6 a trip on parking, and about $14 a trip on taxis.
That's a savings of about $40 a trip... a FREE lay.

Diego,
Then you can show him your brown eye and run away. I just took a look at this thread for the heck of it and the guy razzes me for a post made 2 months ago! Throwing gas on the fire? He went out and chopped wood and re-lit something that burned out months ago!
If you can't take the heat...make it hotter!

I'm starting to think Los Angelinos are suffering from drain bamage from spending too much time in their cars.

Hey Diego
All I'm saying is that I did it(measured the exact miles...you're just going by the map.
I never said I use the 15 for roundtrip, I said DRIVING TO TJ.
Why don't you drive the 15 and measure it for yourself, instead of just saying it SEEMED longer.
| By 694me on Saturday, January 12, 2002 - 12:16 pm: Edit |
Diego. Gas: 50 mile differential $4 times 2 = $8
Parking $5 on US
Bus to Rev $2.50 round trip
Savings your way $15.50 max.
You like cheap SGs and run down hotels?
