Hello gents,
What is the best tequila money can buy in MX?
I need about ten bottles for X-mas gifts.

I prefer Centanario Anejo, if you like an 'old' drink.
If you prefer a 'light' drink, go with the Plata.

While it may not sound like a good one,,Cabo Wabo is actually a good sipping tequila.
I think you can only bring one liter back without paying a tax.

Actually, I believe that you can bring back two bottles per trip. (2 liters)
I've brought back two bottles each day, for two days in a row, and got no grief at all from the boys at customs.

How do you rate Patron Gold?
By StrikeEagle on Friday, December 07, 2001 - 02:50 pm: Edit |
DT,
I'd think that you could do two bottles in the morning, and two in the evening. (shift change) But, I'm not sure I'd push it too hard. Worst case, they'll make you toss the 'extras' and you're out the cash.
Dazed,
I'm not a big fan of Patron, and I prefer Plata to Oro in most every brand. I generally prefer Anejo to Plata as well. (just hard to get Anejo anywhere but MX) Some guys don't like Anejo as it tends to be pretty 'thick' and heavy on the flavor.

don julio anejo hands down, in my humble opinion is the best tequila.
By Hippie on Saturday, December 08, 2001 - 07:39 am: Edit |
I'll take Cazadores over Don Julio any day, but it depends on your taste. If you don't really like the tast of tequila (no, that is not a slam in any way), go for Don Julio or another good anejo. I prefer the stronger taste of reposados, with Cazadores being my hands down favorite. If price is no object, Profidio makes some very smooth tequilas that are aimed at the American market.

The only problem is that "Porfidio" is no longer in business. Reasons extend to the fact that they weren't using 100% agave to a "money problem". A good friend owns a chain of liquor stores (hence, the box of Remy shooters, El Fuego!) and I bought up his last 3 Porfidio Anejo hand-blown bottles with the cactus's in them.
Patron (silver) and El Tesoro (silver & anejo) have been my tequila of choice lately (except for the quarts of Cazadores I drank in TJ on my last trip) but I've also become hooked on Chinaco's new "Premium Reserve Anejo".

Aardvark,
Patron I have been told goes by another name in Mexico and the blown glass bottle is only for export. Can you tell me the name Patron goes by in Mexico?
By Aardvark on Sunday, December 09, 2001 - 05:55 am: Edit |
No, regretfully I can't...but would like to know as it would be my drink of choice if it was in the bars. I drink Patron & El Tesoro here in the US (that is, unless I bring some with me!).
Two other tequilas that I don't have any problems with are Rio De Plata & Milagro. I drink both their anejo versions and like both. They both produce shooters as well that would be easy to get into the clubs.
I've heard rumors lately (that I'm about to research) that Hawaii is producing tequila from cactuses growing there.
There were rumors awhile back that tequila prices were about to raise greatly due to a shortage of agave but other then the normal time-inducing raises, I haven't seen anything too drastic yet.

Porfidio...they have different types. Triple destilled, anejo,reserved..$500/bottle. they have lower priced ones, all of relatively outstanding quality. I usually buy the silver triple destilled $30 for everyday.
