Tried Al Capone's last night, had the Pistola 45 for the meal sorry but I didn't steal the menu so I could tell you exactly what it was. 3 types of meat, potatoes, tomato soup, tortias. 70 pesos.
1 coke 9 pesos. Total cost 79 pesos. Food not to bad, the meat was nice and tender and was full of flavor, the gravy was a little on the salty side for me, the tomato soup was hot but just a little bland (maybe Progresso is better). Location, Right next to the Chicago Club Bar. The resteraunt also has daily specials that change daily.

ouch 79 pesos for a zona resturant!

Location: Next door to the Chicago Club How does that saying go: Location, location, location. They got it.
Décor: '50's diner, all plastic tile and bright colors. Very clean. They really invested in the kitchen - take a look at all that stainless steel, and the range. Surprisingly not as much seating as I would expect. Nice TV and juke box in the corner. Bathroom is small but clean, well stocked with TP and paper to dry your hands.
Prices: This place is NOT cheap, but they are trying to do two things with the food: make it of high quality, and make it "American". This is not the place to go for the quintessential Mexican (or even TJ) dining experience. But the location can't be beat, and I suspect many guys who would hesitate to eat at a lot of the places in TJ will be comfortable eating here.
The food is good, and the portions are also good. I am scanning a copy of the menu, and will include it in the next two posts. I have now eaten here twice, and both times I was very happy with the food, and left full.
Friday night I had the Al Capone Combination, as did Redondgo. This gets you a filet mignon wrapped in bacon with a spicy mushroom sauce, three butterfly'd shrimp in an even spicier sauce, and two chili's. They call the chili's "chiles rellenos", but they are not what I expected based on that. The chilis are HOT. Too hot for me, so I gave mine to Redongdo, who ate his two and stopped at one of mine.
Also on the plate are some steamed veggie's and a small amount of rice pilaf. This is all served with a basket of garlic bread. (As I said, not exactly traditional Mexican fare.) This dinner runs $10 US.
I also had a Cesar salad that was just so so. Not as good as many I have had in Mexico. (But I wanted to see if I got sick. The things I do for my fellow Hombres. Felt fine ever since!) We each had a soda (they do have diet sodas here, BTW). Total bill was $27 US.
Overall I was happy with the meal both times I ate here. If you are looking for a place IN LA ZONA for a good, "safe" American style meal, this is the place.
BTW, Augie (sp?) runs the place, and is very open to suggestions and ideas. Let him know what you want. He has already added some cheaper meals just in the short time he has been open, due to customer suggestions. (They had a hand written card with some other dishes on it, but somehow I lost it. These were mostly in the 30-40 peso range.)

Dirtyoldman, did you notice the prices went up 20 pesos from the time Al Capone's opened up to the time that you scanned the menu they have totally changed the menu. They got rid of the 38 Pistola, the 22 Pistola and many other items. The items used to have a number by them on the far left side column.

Have they totally changed the "desert" menu, too? The pictured menu item looks tasty, but I'm looking for something with a little less fat.

Nice Taco Surprise...
I had a very pleasant surprise at Al Capones (next to Chicago Club). I ordered the Tacos and was blown away. They are using a very high quality of meat and you can taste the difference right away -- especially when compared to street cart tacos. Nice fresh tortillas. Also, instead of a watery Guacamole sauce they actually slice up large pieces of fresh Avacodo plus pieces of tomato and onion. Give them a try. To date I have tried Tacos El Gordo, La Chuleta, and Al Capones. I would say for hi-quality meat and cleanliness-- definetely go with Al Capones.

I've eaten at this place 2x. The tacos were good, and the view is nice because the chicas eat there...
Less fat!

I have become a semi-regular at Restaurante Al Capone. Some posters have mentioned that it is a bit pricey for ZN. Indeed, any of the daily ‘specials’ run $8-10. However, those entrees usually feature steak. The last few times I stopped in they had six or eight items, all priced at 35 pesos ($4.00). Everything I have tried has been tasty. The portions are not huge, but are satisfying. You can’t beat the location. It is worth a try…Bosco

I like the place, having eaten there for the first time this last trip. A big plus is that the chicas really seem to like it and I saw 2 CC hotties eating in there over a few day's period: Alma & Alexia. The one downside is the place can get hotter then AB on a Saturday night!

Gotta love this place. I'm now a regular, too. Sometimes the chicas in there pretty much keep to themselves, but Friday was different. With all the mirrors in there, it can get kind've playful.

Plus all the cheap mother-fucker monger low-life drivel don't stink up this relatively classy joint. This is not meant as a flame.

My only gripe with the place is that it seems to have driven Tacos El Primo out of business. It hasn't been open the last three times I've been down.
| By Aardvark on Monday, April 22, 2002 - 04:46 am: Edit |
Tacos Primo was open every night I was there last week but it's customer base certainly has dwindled...except for pretty Jenny CC who was in there (at least) 2 nights in a row putting away the tacos. I teased her that she was seemingly "working" Primo because both nights she introduced me to a "new friend" who she had just met in there each night.

Several of us ate here again this week. I was still happy with the food, although it may have lost a little of it's luster. Each time I ate here, the food was pretty good (not outstanding), it's so damn convenient, and I left satisfied (stuffed). It is now open 24/7, and they have added a lot of items to the menu, along with English translations. They also have a number of items that are cheaper than before, so you can eat for $5-6.
For dinner I had one of the specials. It was a combo plate with chicken, beef, and a LOT of shrimp, fried with onions and peppers. Very good, just on the brink of being too spicy for my taste, but not crossing over the line. Rice and beans as well as fresh chips and tortillas. PT had the fish taco plate, with 3 tacos plus sides. We each also had a bottle of pop. Total came to 16 dollars and change.
My only real complaint is that at 8PM the place was HOT. What is it with lack of ventilation in TJ?? Lots of Adelitas chicas (and even a waiter) came by to eat here as well.

Get the filet mignon. It comes by itself or with the Al Capone special. The filet mignon is the best thing on their menu. And say hi to Javier
