If You Drink Beer, Only Rrder Tecate Cans at Las Chavelas

Las Chavelas is notorious for watering down the beer. You may say this isn't bad thing if you need to drive back home, but since you will not know where the substitute water came from, and probably prefer not to know, I strongly recommend drinking only Tecate cans.
I always wandered why so many locals do that, since IMHO Tecate in cans is way worse than any other beer in TJ and gives me a hangover headache which XX doesn't. The answer is: if you need to drink more than a few, go to a real bar like LP/AB/CC where the beer is treated with respect.
BTW, Tropical Bar is even worse. I never noticed it at Miami/Hk, but haven't been there in recent months.

How do they water down the bottles?

By Dog on Monday, March 25, 2002 - 03:16 pm:  Edit

When the waiters have brought me bottled beers at Tropical they open the bruskies at the table, especially when it's happy hour and two for one.

By T_Bone on Monday, March 25, 2002 - 03:25 pm:  Edit

Same with me - they usually do it right in front of you so you hear it being opened as well.

Are you saying Robertx, that they open the bottles, remove some beer and put in into a pitcher of some sort for themselves, refill the bottle up with water, recap the bottle, and then serve it to you.

By Robertx on Monday, March 25, 2002 - 04:50 pm:  Edit

You guys crack me up. First: both bars, LC and TB, resell old beer which was standing for hours or longer after someone left it on the table. I don't know how they split the beer between bottles, but believe me they have enough time and personal to do it. I have tried closing a beer bottle myself and it is very easy. If you look at the cap you would see it. But howmany times have you looked at the bottle before they open it?
I only began to know it after it became very obvious. At the beginning I thought it was a problem of the XX factory. However, in ALL my drinking in TJ this never occured at AB/CC/LP etc. Given the quality of management of LC/TB I think this is too much of a coincidence.
On Friday I almost had a fight with the waiter at TB. The XX he sold me was so far watered down that it was disgusting. I demanded a new one and got one... Both bottles were opened in front of me and the later clearly tasted mu different.
They may be able to fool me with anything, but not with XX. My body filters so much of that stuff over the course of a week that it knows!
The short answer to T_bone: Yes.

The bottles have "twist off" lids. What can be twisted off can also be twisted on.

I spend alot of time in all of these bars, and I always end-up getting fucked-up. I usually drink Bohemia, which can not be rebottled by hand. I've have never, ever, suspected that my beer was watered down. It is possible, but unlikely.

Just so you know, Mexican beer tastes diffrent in the US, than it does in Mexico, but if anything, it's little stronger in Mexico.

Twist off lids??? At what bar did you get twist offs????

By Bajaboy on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 06:33 am:  Edit

My mistake, they're not twist offs. My point is that I don't think they water down our beers. Again, anything is possible down there.

my concern would be what kind of water are they using to "water down" these drinks.

The most amazing scams in TJ doesn't surprise me.
I believe Robertx but I do not believe they do this to every beer.
I have been given a beer right from someone elses bucket that was just given back to the bar.
I simply asked for another and got one right away without any haggle.

But they buy these drinks so cheap it amazes me that they would take the time and have some guy sit there and do this procedure.

They are saving nothing on this as many have said their bottles are not watered down.

But if they are doing this stick to the cans so the waiters can come over and give you can the "shakes".

I very rarely have beers in the zona.
Once a week I hit L.C. for Cumbia lessons during the day and have 2 XX's and they never been watered down.

my question is if I order water would they beer it down ?

take care
Milkman

This is all very disturbing. It certainly says a lot for honesty in regards to the proprietors of the establishment. I never really thought about it until I read this thread, but now come to think of it, the beers at LC don't exactly have that "tangy" taste of fresh cold beer. And I've also noticed it always takes me 6 or 8 beers to get a good buzz. This will alert me to be more suspicious in the future when I go in there.

Bohemia may be a good option. It is less often sold and therefore less likely to be messed with. I agree with Milky, that they don't do it to every beer, but just the chance of 1 in 10 or 1 in 5 would creep me out. I don't see how they could mess with cans, thats why I'll stick to Tecate cans.
Milky: I don't know if they beer-down the water. You may ask for a watered-down beer and see what happens. :)

By T_Bone on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 12:12 pm:  Edit

I don't belive this has ever happened to me but if this were to happen, TJ would be the place.

I also am a XX fan and would always order that over Tacate in a can.

I've done the 2-for-1 at TB a few times and always have to flag down a waiter to open my second bottle. I keep saying to myself that I should bring one of my keychain/bottle openers that I have lying around (and used to keep permantely with my keys).

From now on I'll bring one and when I order I'll order my first round directly at the bar and say I'll open them myself please. There is an exterior opener connected to the outside of the bar as well.

I totally believe you Robertx - it's just a lower level of rip-off that I hadn't considered or experienced (I think). I almost expect my hard stuff to be watered down but damnit I thought beer was sacred. Hey, at least they don't serve beer on tap.

I have been going her for years and I have never noticed or tasted a week beer her. In fact my Fav. was a masera her and sometimes I used her opener to open my own beer and hers, the caps were not loose or had ever been taken off before hand. I cannot speak for others but I do not belive this happens in LC.

By Masterbates on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 01:07 pm:  Edit

If this actually does go on, then I think the management of the LC should be made aware that there is already a site discussion over this violation. This should get them to knock it off. After all, it doesn't matter that they know we're discussing their place of business on this site. I have been repeatedly told that some chica's at the LC know there is a discussion board about clubs in TJ, one of them who brought it to my attention was Tanya (19, tall and slender) She once asked if there's any new info. on the TJ site about the LC. One of those guys who's fully aware of this site is Santiago. He's the daytime manager/waiter who's always very obliging and extremely hospitable. If I brought it to his attention that the word is out about deceiving customers, I'm sure they'd quickly change their ways.

If this continues, I'll just head back on over to the Kin Kle Bar and patronize that establishment instead! Maybe in that place the women aren't real, but at least their beer is!

Watering down beers? What a hilarious concept you guys came up with. These beers cost from c25-c50/bottle by the truck load with Negra Modelo and Bohemia at the high end. If they buy enough quantity, they got a good amounts of the free chica ficha pissy little bottle for free.

However, they do try to maximize their profits by refilling a new bottle with the leftover beers, and reselling the unopened bottles. The new model of Dos Suckie beers can be twisted off and twisted back on. Remember, what came in the freezer last would be the first ones to come out and that's why you got that warm stale taste. If you got a bottle of refilling beers, you aren't only drinking leftover beers, but you're also drinking other people slavia.

To help yourself and others in the future, empty your beer in the bucket or pour them in a bathroom stall BEFORE you parted that velvet curtain. Let's practicing safe drinking beer together!!!
