Places to Take a Date

ClubHombre.com: Tijuana: Advice/Questions/Commentary: Places to Take a Date

By Robert Johnson on Saturday, August 23, 2003 - 02:20 am:  Edit

This thread is intended for places to take a date, either a "working woman," or non. My first listing is El Lugar Del Nopal (The Place of the Cactus). While this is a restaurant, it is much more, so, I'm filing here, rather than the "Tijuana/Restaurant" thread.

Some other places that I'd like to see listed here are, for example, the Mundo de Divertiso (Fun World), in the Zona Rio. It has a miniature golf and other features. Also, the Malecon (seawalk); the club on the south side of 8th near Quintana Roo; and the three Tijuana Cultural Centers -CECUT, Playas and also a location just west of Centro, on a street called, I believe, Paris.

So, in other words, this thread is not intended for hotel listings, nor an "ordinary" restaurant (even elegant), nor for movie theaters - those all have threads.

El Lugar del Nopal. Callejón 5 de Mayo #1328. Phone 011-52-664-685-1264. Cinco de Mayo is three blocks west of Constitucíon (then Niños Heroes, then F Martinez, then 5 Mayo). The Place is at the south end of the dead-end street, on the left (east) side, a few blocks from the Jai-Ali in downtown Tijuana. Easy to find, really. I do not know why it is called "Callejón," as that means "alley". Unlike Callejón Coahuila, this is neither an alley nor a small street adjacent to another street.

The Place is a restaurant, coffee and tea shop, with a variety of entertainment - sometimes music, other times, even plays and book signings.

As I recall, the menu has a wide variety of dishes and prices. Also, I recall it as not being excessively noisy. You can actually converse with Miss Charming!

There are quite a bunch of attached museums, art shops, and bookstores, on the east side of The Place.

Mexicans like to dress up at least a fair amount when they step out for an evening on the town. Slacks, a nice shirt, belt, dress shoes.

When I've been there, someone watches the parking lot, tho the neighborhood seems ok.

A web site for The Place would be appreciated. The San Diego Reader ( sdreader.com/events/baja ) lists a lot of events for this place, and others in Baja.

Tijuana Cultural Center, El CECUT.

Paseo de los He'roes and Mina Street, Zona Río.
Phone 011-52-664-687-9633.

cecut.gob.mx/calendario

Plays, concerts, omnimax movies, regular (non-omnimax) movies, operas, dances, museum(s?), an outdoor sculpture garden (on south side of the complex) {in which I've done a picnic, for a small "fee" (bribe)}, and bookstore. This is the federal government's cultural center in Tijuana.

Some of the omnimax movies are in English. Lately, they've been showing one on the Mayans; on Sundays, at 2 pm, in English. Other times, in Spanish. Last showing of any omnimax movie is, I believe, 9pm.

Tours of the museum(s) are at 10 am and 4 pm, in Spanish and English. I have not taken that tour.

The "regular" movies are in the main building (as opposed to "The Ball"). They tend to follow a theme, and are at somewhat odd times - say, Tuesdays, 6 pm. I believe some are in English.

The museum closes at 5 pm.

Mexicans love movies, so, go early (30-60 minutes) and get in line, if you want to see a movie, or it may be sold out. This is especially the case on Saturday nights. Omnimax flicks cost about $4 U.S, much less than at Balboa Park.

This place hosts an annual dance series, an annual Guitar Concert series, and is the site of a Mainly Mozart concert annually (as is the Cathedral at 2nd and Niños He'roes, near our stomping grounds, La Coahuila).

How about the Caliente sports book right there on main street? Save the transportation $ and wasted time. Fine dining at your footstep and free flowing booze. Sound romantic? Well I can`t tell you how MANY guys I`ve seen up there w/ a sg. Not just placing a quick wager or two. But had her watching a NBA or NFL game. You try to figure it out, becuz I can`t. Moral of the story: Never underestimate Caliente as a good date choice w/ favorite chica.

Milky, I've read your section, "Chicas Beyond the Zona," and yes, it's good. Where the devil is it, tho? I'll review it with an eye to having the above switched to that section. As I do NOT frequent Kinkles, we have probably NOT met.

Meanwhile, some follow-up info on my posts, above:

Mundo Divertido (the correct spelling), at
Paseo de Los He'roes and Jose' Ma. Vela'sco #2578, Zona Río.

Parque Jose Ma. Morelos
Blvd. Insurgentes #1600, La Mesa.
(664) 625-2469, -3886, 627-9337.

Both bits of info are from: tijuana.com/tijuanasite/entertainment_familyentertainment.htm

In the same site, there's a list of night clubs, tho the following was omitted:

Cafe' Juglar, on the south side of 8th Street, a few blocks east of Revolución (around Avenida Quintana Roo) is quite nice. A decent menu and sometimes some good (FREE!)live acts.

The sea walk, Malecón, is simply the sidewalk at the beach. There are several nice, inexpensive restaurants along the way.

Jtull, thanks, tho I'd avoid taking a "non-working" chica to Caliente in Calejón Coahuila (the "alley")! Don't know, otherwise, of "main street."

WORST CONcert Ever, at Tijuana "Fair"

Posted by avisar on September 05, 2003 - 13:30 pm on Mexico Chat.

About two years ago, I went out to an outdoor concert at the Tijuana Fair (Feria), $4, it was excellent. So, I recently posted, under Tijuana/Places to Take a Date, about the Fair, which is currently going on.

When Lancer came to town, he said, "Lets do something like that." This past Wednesday night, we did.

$20; no change was given for the 200 peso ticket, even when we asked for it.

There were no food booths outside the fair, so, we paid another $4 to go inside. (There may be fast food available across the street, as there is a supermarket there, I believe).

Sat down at the FIRST restaurant. And the LOUDEST. No need to chew. Place a chunk of food in the mouth, it vibrated apart and moved on down the hatch; swallowing was optional.

Came time for the bill, the guy had made a mistake, in our favor. I pointed it out, but, he still could not get it right. He said, tho, that there was a 20% "Service Charge," which was on the bill. I'd not noticed it, but when he pointed out that bit of B.S., I did not continue to try to educate the guy on how to add. The food was overpriced; $10 off made it about right.

Lancer said we should get out fast, before they figured things out. Unfortunatly, I dawdled, and they did figure. We paid more.

Walked around, and thought about it. Went back. Looked at the menu. It was a very simple, one page thing. Nothing about a "20% Service Charge." I started protesting. The manager told the waiter to refund the "Service Charge."

Went to the lower level of the concert building, Palenque. We'd been told by another concert-goer that the lower level was $45. But, we wanted to see the two hoties passing out mints, advertising a newspaper I'll not name, 'cuz I have some idea it is corrupt.

Upstairs, we got seats. And got crawled over by about 200 people, during the course of the wait for the concert, and the concert itself. Wait for the concert? Well, of course, wait. Most every concert is, like, 30 minutes late.

The LOUDEST Public Address system, with a virtually non-stop bingo and cockfight announcer; he kept YELLING in our ears. But, when people ask me, "What do you have in your pack," I tell 'em, "Money, condoms, and earplugs." The plugs were of some help, but, not NEARLY enough.

After OVER an HOUR of waiting for the concert, enduring the NOISE, I went to the restroom. And began to understand why some of the 100's of people were crawling over us. There was not an aisle free of chairs, on the upper level, for people to walk around inside of the building. There were vertical walkways free of chairs, but not, to go from side to side. You had to crawl over others.

Back with Lancer, I got an idea. Being a good student, I was prepared: A felt marker and some blank paper (also in the pack).

"CONCIERTO AHORA!" (Concert Now!). Stood up on the seat, showing the sign, especially when the SCREAMING announcer would pause. The crowd around us went nuts. I thought about taking my show "on the road," but, it was too hard, in that fire trap, to move around.

After TWO HOURS the concert FINALLY started.

In the middle of the first song, I asked Lancer, "Does this sound system stink as badly as I think it does?" I was not sure if it was the earplugs. Lancer yelled back that yes, the sound was atrocious. The building is nothing more than an oversized steel drum. Terrible echo.

I thought Lancer was a big fan of Sebastian, so, I did not suggest we walk. He later said, he thought I'd be disappointed. LOL!

After enduring an 1 hr, 15 minutes, Joan (that's the way HE spells his name) Sebastian gave up. Thus, fortunatly, it was one of the shortest concerts I've been too. Still, the absolute WORST.

Lancer, sorry about your last night in Mexico on this latest trip.

Like a silk scarf, her singing wraps 'round you.

"Mí Corazon es romper no mas! Tú es aqui con migo!" (My heart is broken no more! You are here with me!).

You relax, enjoying Mexico's finest - a pretty señorita crooning love ballads, a Negra Modelo, and "un vaso de aqua de natural, con hielo (pronounced "yellow")" [a glass of water, natural, with ice) (in other words, a (free) glass of distilled water, with ice]. The evening's breezes caress, like her songs.

Gloria Luna is singing from 1pm to 10, Saturdays and Sundays, on a patio. The place is signed, "Rest. (Restaurant) Bar Las Mañitas", beneath a much larger "Pacifico Clara."

NW corner of Aldrete and 1st. Aldrete is two blocks east of Revolucíon, and south of 1st it is called Negrete. If you are bicycling or walking to La Coahhuila, this is about a block west of the Tijuana pedestrian bridge. Aldrete is a major street with a traffic light for pedestrians. First is also called Primera and Articulos 123. Revo & 1st is where the big metal arch is.

Until about a year ago, a young beauty named Lupita Casillas sang here. Gloria is also a fan of hers. If anyone knows where Casillas is now singing, please e-mail me, avisar2004@yahoo.com.

Places to take a date? I like Ben's idea: TO THE LOVE MOTEL!!! Anything else and you're bullshitting YOURSELF as to what you want from your 'date'.

By Robert Johnson on Friday, September 12, 2003 - 07:24 pm:  Edit

Ben did not respond above, but often takes women to places other than hotels.

While Leche Ma'am promised he'd e'mail me as to where his info is, as usual, he did not. I stumbled onto it: Tijuana/Reporter Pages/Milkman. Towards what is, as of 9.03, the bottom of the pile, is a post by RobertX, April 8, 03, which I largely duplicated, unknowningly.

By Milkman on Saturday, September 13, 2003 - 02:16 pm:  Edit

Sorry i also told this chica that I would pull out and cum in her mouth but I didn't

Just ask Erip about me and getting back to people sorry about that :-)

thanks for the duplication :-)

This topic duplicates the Milkman section to some extend.
I posted my favorite date-spots before. Here is an update:
1) Omnimax Theater at CECUT. Movies for 40 pesos. I saw a great movie about vulanos with my date recently. It was very impressive. http://www.cecut.gob.mx/OMNIENERO.HTM
2) CECUT. Centro Cultural de Tijuana.
Right now they have stuff on Mayas (free!)... Mexican chicas love that stuff. Makes them proud of their history, blablabla... http://www.cecut.gob.mx/calabril.htm
3) El lugar del nopal. The most romantic coffee shop in Tijuana. At night live music and candle light in the garden under the stars with wine and reasonably priced food.
website down, located in Centro, in the dead end of Cinco de Mayo north of 6th street. 011-52-664-685-12-64
4) Latitud 32. A coffee shop right on the board walk in playas. Just to the south of the Teatro nightclub (which I have not seen in action for quiet a while). Best place for a long, cheap, romantic date to watch the sunset.
5) Plaza Mundo Divertido in Mesa, off Via Rapida, just after the new Home Depot. Great bowling alley (BolBol) and amusement park for kinds. The plaza has NO expensive stores or restaurants, but still looks nice. Good place for a semi-pro. She can't shop for too much money here. For example Plaza Rio can cost you easily $100 by just walking to the movies.
Mundo Divertido La Mesa

Horario: Lu – Vi 12 p.m. – 9 a.m. Sa – Do 12 p.m. 10 p.m.

WEnt to Plaza Mundo Divertido recently. Had a really great time. Lots to do there like Robertx said. Even have a small movie theatre - maybe 4 choices. Game center was interesting. Ended up eating at their Burger King. (A little short on the places to eat). Also Recommended.
