More on crime in TJ: Yes, there are isolated cases of mongers getting mugged on the sidewalks in daylight, mostly prior to the new police substation being set up on Constitucion.

I can't recall any cases of mongers getting mugged out on the street.

At any rate, I know more people who have been mugged in downtown LA or SD in daylight.

No muggings. About three years ago before the police station was set up on Const. I used to se a mugging a month, or about 30% of my visits. The police have tightened security and I have not seen a monger being mugged this year (12 visits). In fact the only mugging Ive seen has been by the police and these were drug dealers.
This is not to say that TJ is safe but mugging is now less frequent than it was.

The daylight muggings are still going on, but are apparently far less frequent. As long as you keep your head up and are alert, you will be fine. If you walk up the hill on toward 1st be extra careful. There is absolutely nothing on 1st worth bothering with, so just stay off of it and you will miss the most dangerous part of the area. Walking at night between the zona and Revolucion or the border is another story. I still do it, but would hesitate to recommend it. Also avoid the west side of Ninos Heroes south of Calle Coahuilla. TV pickpockets and other assorted shady characters. This is all assuming you are not obviously infirm or stumbling drunk, but even if you are you should still have no probem if you stick to Calle and Callejon Coahuila and Constitution from the alley to CC.

Are there any real dangers trying to pick up street girls around the block near Adelitas? Like picking up someone underaged, or getting mugged, or getting hassled by police.

Even if you are timid, aside from minor nuisances like aggressive panhandlers and street touts, you should find it safe around the block and in "the alley".
