I am interested in owning a Taxi to establish an income base. If it works out for the first one, I will buy another. From what I have learned speaking to Mexican amigos that lived there, the permission and plates(placas) for say, a Blue Taxi
are about $10k dollars. You are also on the hook for the maintenance which is not that much considering that the mechanics charge TJ prices which are a lot less than US. The driver pays, say, $700 pesos per day. Over a year's time you get your investment back more than double.
Can anyone verify this?
I am a looooong time reader and TJ visitor but do not post often. I appreciate any and all help.

Care to elaborate on your reasons for wanting a Blue taxi rather than a taxi libre?

Reytj:
In my brief discussions with taxistas (sampling of two is admittedly small, that is why I am looking for informed opinions here) I was told that the income from Blue Taxi would be higher.
That may turn out to be wrong, I need to know the angles and pitfalls. I have a Mexican buddy here in California (he spent a few years recently living in TJ) telling me that these taxis can be lucrative if you can scrape together the cash to make the investment. I am trying to corroborate that and look for contacts to make it reality.
Thanks,
Waldow

"I was told that the income from Blue Taxi would be higher."
Even if that is true now and I'm not saying that it is, if the taxi libre drivers are granted the 40% rate increase they are seeking it would no longer be the case.
