Restaurant Review - Tortas Ahogadas "Los Cuates"
Located on the south side of Articulo 123 (Calle Primera) between Constitución and Avenida Niños Heroes.
Their signature dish is, of course, "Tortas Ahogadas" (22 pesos)
(A Sandwich "drowned" in HOT sauce). The origin of this sandwich is claimed to be Guadalajara.
The first time I went there they fed me the "Gringo version" (lacking hot sauce).
I mentioned the lack, and the waitress laughed and said "Next time".
As an aside, when you order in a "normal" Mexican restaurant in San Diego,
they often ask "¿ Para llevar, o para aquí ?".
The next time I went in, she asked "¿ Para llorar ?" (For crying).
I answered, "Yes, but only with one eye". She laughed and brought my soda.
The sandwich was beef (I think) served on a hotdog-roll shaped bun.
The meat was nothing special, the sauce is the best of it.
I sipped a small spoonful of the sauce - MISTAKE !
It was hot (I am a middlin' hot sauce wus) But as I spooned the sauce over the sandwich and ate it, it was good & flavorful.
I got to suck air over my burning lips for a block or two.
Remember to say "para llorar" (Par'-rah Your-rahr') when your order,
or you'll get the "gringo version", which aborts the experience.
Nada de Inglés. Minimal "Mexican style" seating.
