Taurino's steak House on the south side of 6th between Ninos de Heros and Martinez. Good steaks, other food available. The owner keeps an eye on things. The chow is well prepared and there is plenty of it. The owner always stops and says something like "a comer" if you haven't polished everything off. You can get a very good meal for under $15 and you are within walking distance of ZN. Recommended.

I went there last week, had steak, my ladyfriend shrimp. Altogther with drinks it came out to $25 for 2 including tip!
Downside: the food was mediocre to say the least. This place would not to survive a week in SD, but if you look for something in walking distance to the zona and not spend too much money this is an option. I will not be back.
I heard from others about a restaurant "La Casta" or "La Costa". Where is is and how is the food?

There are several reviews of La Costa at Redsnake under resturants and the reviews vary widely.
I took a favorita there, for our first "date" for lunch, the place was almost empty, got waited on hand and foot.We weren't really hungry so we asked for Ceaser Salad, even though it's not on the menu, the manager made it for us by hand from scratch right at the table. Very Impressive. Really nice atmosphere if you want to impress your date. ONE thing though, might just be me but I drank ice tea and got sick,so be careful.

Senorpanocha,
Those directions don't make sense as Coahuila runs in the same direction as 7th, albeit 7 blocks away. I suspect you mean between Rev and Constitution.

Robertx,
Sorry you didn't like it. Generally, the steaks are decent (try the Filet Migon), the price is excellent, the service is good, and the location is walkable from ZN. I will return.

I probably will try La Costa on my next visit. If it is on 7th btw Const and Rev it is almost as far from the zone as El Taurino (Hereos and 7th). In gerneral I just want to mention to everybody to be careful if you eat pork. For some good reason jews and muslims dont eat it. In countries like mx you can get a lot of diseases from undercooked pork. I stick with carne.

Weird. The one time I went to La Costa I sat for almost 30 minutes and was never even approached with a menu. And the place was nearly empty. I finally got up and walked.
If you do happen to be in the area try the bakery right across the street by Mexico Lindo. Killer desserts and they have a sit down area if you want to eat there.
Taurino has its off moments. Their house salad with its limpid dressing can be skipped. And the almond fish is nothing much. But the beef and chicken has always been good and the waiters very attentive.

I went to "Casa de Carne" Sat. nite for dinner. I looked all over the place trying to find you guys! Anyway it's across the street from Unicornio
on 7th just off Revolution. Landed there about 6PM and was the ONLY person there...uh-oh, bad sign? NOPE!! Had a fantastic 12oz New York Steak, baked potato, garden salad and bread, and a glass of wine. It was absolutely fabulous. Total tab: $14.25.
For desert I walked to Unicornio and fucked the dancer that had just come off stage.
Truly "Bon Appetite"!!!!!!

Boy did this thread get off topic!!
I tried El Taurino last night with a "Chairman Mao".
Great service. We ordered the house specialty. Good big piece of beef (butterflied cut) to grill at 1/2 " thickness. Under $15 each after tip, including a round of cervezas. I like rare and their medium rare was suitably tender.
Dark in that area more than to be expected. Related to CA power woes? We ship power over the border at TJ.
I second all referals to this Mex. Beef server.

ROACH ALERT!!!!
I was in TJ this past sat. sep.1st. Before hitting the zona we decided to grab a bite to eat, ended up at taurino on 6th street. me and my buddy ordered 2 T bones(steaks were bad), half-way through our meal my buddy found a roach in the veggies. Well that's the last time I'll go there.
From now on,the pussies won't be the only thing I'll inspect before eating it.

I enjoy El Taurino and will continue to do so - It's just that I will be a little more watchful.
Do you guys think that cockaroaches couldn't get into the restaurant?
I remember once I was listening to the radio food guy at the time Paul Wallich. A woman was complaining about a very famous coffee shop in San Diego - Wallich would not let her give the name. The woman caller had found a cockroach on the counter and she told the waitress about it. The waitress turned around to the cook and said now the cockroaches have gotten out of the kitchen -- true story.

I once saw a cockroach climbing up the wall of the most highly recommended restaurant in Miami Beach. Remember there is never just on cockroach.

Rumor has it that it was closed down by the power company for "tapping" power over an extended period of time..
Apparently the bill for back electricity was somewhere around 400,000 pesos...
Anyone been by recently to see if they are really closed?
