Actually, Pueblo Amigo has a US toll free number: 1-800-386-6985.

By Strikeeagle on Sunday, April 15, 2001 - 03:53 pm:  Edit

Two points of note.

Calling either the Pueblo Amigo or Grand Hotel on the US 800 number will tend to net you a higher quoted rate. Yes, it is possible to negotiate that rate down upon check in, but just be forewarned that you'll tend to be quoted $100+ by either hotel if you use the 800 number.

Leyva is NOT a hotel that I'd suggest for ANY gringo at ANY time. The place is lousy with drug dealings and assorted 'problem children' just looking for trouble. Years ago, some of the 'old timers' used to stay there, but the place has gone DOWN hill fast, and I'm not aware of anyone who's spent the night there lately.

By Whistler on Sunday, April 15, 2001 - 04:55 pm:  Edit

StrikeEagle, yes, agree that Leyva is not recommended. However, its a number that could be useful to someone. I've had an occasion to use the number in the past.

I also can't personally vouch for Hotel Rizo de Oro, but have never heard anything bad, and it is a number that can be handy.

Cascadas and Coahuila are both OK.

I recently stayed at PA for $750 pesos commercial rate, during the week.

By Porker on Sunday, April 15, 2001 - 05:44 pm:  Edit

I spent several nights at Hotel Leyva this past winter, and still know chicas that live there full time when they are in TJ. Security IS pretty much non-existent, and if that bugs you, definitely don't stay there. Otherwise... It's cheap, rooms are big, water's hot, parking's free for guests, and you gotta love the location.

By Aardvark on Sunday, April 15, 2001 - 06:50 pm:  Edit

The key phrase about calling the Pueblo Amigo's toll free number is "quoted rate". Like anything in Mexico, everything is negoitable. The PA takes corporate situations (i.e. bring a business card), AAA, and other travel clubs into consideration. If you do it right (and it's extremely hard to do it wrong!), you should only pay around $70-$80 pre-tax & other charges for a room.

Hola' gentlemen,

Anyone ever stay at "Hotel Leon" near Rve and 7th?

By Minuteman on Sunday, April 15, 2001 - 10:27 pm:  Edit

I've spent a number of nights at the Levya, most recently a couple of weeks ago. Haven't had a problem yet. However, compared to Cascadas, security is somewhat lacking (actually, as pointed out above, there is no security).

By Minuteman on Sunday, July 01, 2001 - 10:45 pm:  Edit

Back in May it was either $26 or $28 plus $2 deposit for the key.

By Sheetwise on Monday, July 02, 2001 - 04:32 am:  Edit

If there is no AC then I ain't staying there. No reason to travel in style, bang fine ladies and then go back to a friggin sweatbox. I'm not "cool hand luke" over here.

By Porker on Monday, July 02, 2001 - 01:45 pm:  Edit

Actually, the rooms in the wing where they house the gringos at the Leyva have windows. You shouldn't leave them open on the parking lot side unless you want someone crawling into your room at any hour of the night, but street side rooms get a nice breeze coming through. If you bring a fan you'll be all set, at least in the evenings.

The problems in the other Zona hotels isn't so much the heat but the lack of ventilation. The hot air just lingers. If you want A/C in the Zona, Cascadas is your only option, but only on the upper floors and it's not like it blasts cold air.

By Youngbrig on Monday, July 02, 2001 - 05:56 pm:  Edit

Often times too, on the sixth and fifth floors, the switch will be there, and the vent will be in place, but you will hit the switch and...nothing...not even a whirring noise...

At the very least, I like having the whirring noise...Helps somewhat in droning-out the sound of ficha chicas tweaking in the halls...

Some general comments about the Hotel Najera (sp?).

This is the SG hotel across from Hacineda in the alley. The rooms are absolutely disgusting (even for a short-time SG hotel). I've found used condoms laying around on the floor, bed, and edge of the toilet seats. When I've left the room I've told them the rooms were filthy and that there will be no propina until they start doing a little cleaning. Hasn't seemed to effect anything yet. Maybe others could join in to get these guys to at least make an attempt... (prog)

By epimetheus on Sunday, July 29, 2001 - 12:04 pm:  Edit

Progman

You found all those condoms I've been leaving around in that hotel? Damn, I was there last year... hahah

The place is a dive. I was in there w/ Rosa Maria last weekend and there was a smell that "just ain't right". I figure if they let the place get that bad then I'll help them.

BTW, when I finished the last SG I banged there I tossed the condom on the wall and it stuck!! Damn, that's a story all on it's own...

Regards,
E

Hey Epimetheus,

Sick, sick, sick... Didn't you say RM grabbed a mop to cleaned up the mess? As far as stuff sticking to the wall - let's not think about what was on the wall that allowed items to stick! ... (prog)

Hey guys,

Due to the reduced number of flights, I am juggling my schedule a little as of late. In a few weeks I will need to cross la línea at about 3:00 AM to catch a 6:30 AM plane on a Monday morning. I would like to spend as much of Sunday night as possible with a fav. For a variety of reasons this would best be done by getting as decent a hotel as possible in the Rev area. I have never stayed around there before. I am looking for recommendations.

As some of you know I like to go upscale. I am looking for as nice a place as possible around here. Minimum would be that it was clean, had TV, safe for fav after I left, she could check out in the AM without an armed escort.

From my prior knowledge of other posts, I am remembering the Hotel Leon and Villa Zaragoza (where is it ?) sounded about the best. Anybody have recommendations ?

By Redongdo on Monday, October 01, 2001 - 02:39 pm:  Edit

Gitano,

Of the two you mentioned at the end the Villa De Zaragoza is definitly the best. Hotel Leon is a cleaner version of the Zona hotels...about the same size room.

VZ is much nice, they actually provide a complimentary small bottle of water, the glasses are wrapped, there's decent temp control and there's an actual paper strip around the toilet seat. I never thought I'd find something like that so reassuring..HAH!

By Gitano on Monday, October 01, 2001 - 04:16 pm:  Edit

Red,

Thanks. Looks like the way to go. I just went through the VZ thread and with a large endorsement from Mule Lip as well, I feel quite assured.

By Hippie on Monday, October 01, 2001 - 04:38 pm:  Edit

Some of the older VZ rooms are somewhat run down and sub-Motel 6 quality, but for the most part it is pretty decent, about like a Best Western. God knows I have stayed there enough (I knew I was a "regular" when the night clerk even started acting friendly toward me). However, if you are wanting a hotel to more or less hang out in for the whole night, and a 5 minute cab ride from Revo is OK, I would definitely choose the Palacio Azteca instead. As far as I know it is still running $56 a night, and is a lot nicer than VZ. It is the hotel I put my mom in when she visited TJ last year. I switched to VZ only because it is walking distance from Revo and the Zona Norte, and I did not like letting the valets at Azteca park my car. The new Hotel Rio Ritas sounds very promising as well, and it is right on Revo. Probably a lot of noise from the street, however. I have heard that Leon has a few nice jacuzzi rooms, but is otherwise a dump.

By Eunuch on Monday, October 01, 2001 - 11:39 pm:  Edit

I suggest passing on Rio Rita only because it is unproven as yet and Gitano is making a rare trip from far away. I took a look at a $51 room and would guess it is not more than 2/3rds the size of a regular VZ room. Everything is new. The hallway on the second floor was actually very quiet with the lobby windows wide open, but this was on a dead Sunday evening, so I don't know. The bigger issue at Rio Rita might be temperature control. At a $51 rate, temperature control would be expected. The rooms have vents, but I was told they're working on it. Hey, let me know when it's done...

At VZ, be prepared to reject the room if something's wrong; no better way to screw up a trip early than to be choked and poisoned by heavy, lingering pesticide fumes. (Well yeah, I guess this applies anywhere.)

By Redongdo on Tuesday, October 02, 2001 - 04:38 am:  Edit

I've ruled out the Rio Rita as someone reported they don't allow you to bring chicas up there (or only one)... kinda defeats the whole idea eh?

By Gitano on Tuesday, October 02, 2001 - 10:03 am:  Edit

Thanks guys. I am going to go with the VZ. It works well and if Mule Lip liked it, it's got to have immeasurable charm.

Eunuch,
Thanks for the concern, but I am somewhat of a TJ regular. I can be in town as much as 6 or 7 days a month. I just travel a lot.

By Eunuch on Tuesday, October 02, 2001 - 03:04 pm:  Edit

Gitano, I now see that you're the frequent flyer type. Guess I was thrown off by you asking about hotels. 2,100 miles is far, though; right??? (lol)

Have a good first-time stay at the VZ.

A funny story about hotels

My girl and I woke up this morning in a dive hotel in Zona Centro, I don't even know he name.

We woke up to the sound of a guy barking out to sell Tamalis. My girl was hungry so she wrapped herself in the blanket, stuck her head out the door and bought a few.

A few minutes later, the phone wrings. She talks for a few minutes and busts out laughing. As it turns, out the guy selling tamalis told her that if she'd be there the next day, he'd bring her "free" tamalis in exchange for services!

He obviously had NO IDEA who he was talking to! As The Senator said, he couln't carry enough tamalis to afford that chick!

There is an alley about 40 ft East of the NW corner of the allet and Ninos Heros (Rio Rosa Bar) which has been refurbished and has a sign "Cuartos". Anyone used those rooms with SGs? Across from where Araceli plies her trade.

Dear Miker,

Publo Amigo is pretty reputable. Safe parking, chica friendly and close to the border. Try to pay w/ cash if anyway possible. I've never had problems personally but I have heard of credit card problems. I'ts the only negative I've ever heard about this place.

By Bullitt on Sunday, November 14, 2004 - 01:46 am:  Edit

Pueblo Amigo is nice, its close to the border, chica friendly and top shelf for Tijuana. Having the sportsbook and availability of the gamblers rate is also a plus. But something is going on over there. Its seems there is more and more turnover at PA. Back in the day, I used to return and for years, the same people would be working there. I am beginning to be a fan of Palacio Azteca. Its a little more out of the way, but it is a nice hotel and the service is very good. It seems the airline people are making the switch also, I used to see many pilots and stewardesses checking in at Pueblo Amigo, now I see them at Palacio Azteca. But strictly for location, Pueblo Amigo is still hard to beat, they even have a massage parlor and a top line strip club in the same mall.

By Jbr1176 on Sunday, November 14, 2004 - 09:05 am:  Edit

Hey Bullitt, I've never heard of Palacio Azteca and I know Miker was asking me about it. Can you give me some details on this hotel. I might be looking for a place to stay for a few days around thanksgiving. thanks

Palacio Azteca has their own website at

Pueblo Amigo is owned by Tijuana's mayor elect Jorge Hank Rhon truly one of the most sinister figures in Mexico.

Anybody know the phone number for Hotel Pepe & Hotel Cesar, both in near Chicago bar.

(Message edited by flush1 on May 22, 2007)

By Quilombo on Wednesday, January 02, 2013 - 10:45 pm:  Edit

Could a person arrive at a TJ hotel like Cesars or Espana around 1 a.m. with a samll bag and ask the clerk for a reservation that begins around noon that same day? I'd be happy to pay in advance. But I want to be able to leave my bag at the front desk and this is why.

I tried to do that a few years back at a motel in Reynosa and thaught i had clarified the situation with the clerk, but made the mistake of taking my bag up and leaving it in my room before my late night of debauchery began.

The next day a new clerk was on duty and found out they stiffed me for that 12 hour period I wasn't even in the hotel. I got one day but billed for two nights pay. I want to avoid this. I know it's cheap charlie defined, but just trying to have a litte more play money.

In Monterrey you can avoid this altogether because the central bus station is only a couple of blocks from the Monterrey red zone. If you arrive kinda late, you can just leave your bag at the secure left luggage center at the bus station, party all night, when the sun's up and you're finally ready to sleep, make the short walk back to bus station, pick up bag, and check into hotel. It's a good money saver.

One more thing, in an emergency, if you don't have a bag with you and are getting pretty drunk and tired in or very near the zone, is there a fairly clean, safe place that would let you sleep for about four hours under $20?

In Ciudad Juarez they have some places like that near the bridge, very basic, but private room with bed and door that locks. Used to cost $5, but that was 10 years ago...

Which hotel is used for Hong Kong Club sessions? What is the entire day rate for a room for this hotel?

By Scatmandoo on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 - 06:18 pm:  Edit

Hotel Rizo de Oro is located directly above Bar Tropical. (Larger) Hotel Cascades is located directly above both Las Chevalas Bar and Hong Kong Bar. All five businesses are owned by the same family group, so if you stay overnight in either of the two hotels you should be able to bring up chicas from all three bars.
Here is a page that lists room rates from Hotel Cascades' website, which also contains a link to Rizo de Oro's website: http://hotelcascadas.com/rooms-and-suites
