I have an AT&T cell phone. Will it work
in Tijuana? Is the signal from San Ysidro
strong enough so that I'll still be in my local
calling area (and not roaming)?

From my exprience with AT&T the coverage is horrible in San Ysidro. I still have never got a signal in Tijuana, although others say you can if the moon is right.

I have had 2 different AT&T phones over the last couple of years, and both do get some coverage in TJ.
In La Zona, I can usually get good coverage on the street in front of Tropical. Even sometimes inside while eating at some of the places across from CC. In the Leyva for some reason it is seldom a good connection.
All of these are using San Ysidro cell sites.
Crossing the border, even sitting in my car at the check point, it never works!!

Depends on what part of Tijuana. In Playas it sucks. I used to have AT&T but dumped them because off too many problems with their roaming and the customer service was horrible. If your phone is TDMA you may be able to get a second line added thru TelCel though. Of course it would be a Mexican local number.

I have Nextel and it works in Mexico within a few miles of the border. I would guess once you are say 3-4 miles South, no mas.

I'm with Robertosol. Verizon works great. If anyone has trouble with their carrier, Verizon is the way to go. I get analog roaming anywhere I have been in TJ and I get digital non roaming from San Ysidro from around Chicago Club, and across the street and a little further down from La Tropa and about half way back on the way to the pedestrian bridge.

Yes, Verison does work very well but my phone gets cloned about once every couple months. Then I have to change my phone number etc..

Verizon has a two week trial period. You can check it out and only be out 2 weeks service.

I've brought my Tmobile to the zona and it worked fine. As a bonus when I checked my phone usage, it was listed under Rowland Heights (LA), which means it's a free call cause I got 3000 anytime minutes. However, some parts of TJ my phone won't show T-mobile, but it says Tercel...(something), now thats international roaming, and I won't use it.

Just an update:
I've been getting a strong AT&T signal right outside Hotel Leyva(just a couple feer north of the CC enterance) for a couple months now.
