When a great looking chic flashes her tits, don't assume that bulge in her pants is just a hairy muff.

When street touts try to buddy up to you and say, "Hey, man...how u doin...whutz ur name?" Reply, "no habla Ingles".

Then when they ask you the same question in Spanish, reply, "No habla espanol."

Dress down, and don't take anything across the border that you can't afford to leave down there. That means leave the ATM cards, credit cards, etc in a safe location. When I travel down there it's pesos, a little cash less than $50 passport and your DL.

Don't get into the front seat of a taxi, or share one with somebody you don't know. Avoid the pedestrian overpass on the Mexican side after the sun goes down as it's a prime mugging location, and last thing...The police in Mexico are not your friends!!

Roadglide you surprise me:

Always ride in the front of a taxi.

The police can certainly help you. They are corrupt, but if you have a problem they are paid to protect and serve. I have use their assistance on numerous occasions.

I would recommend to stay in the zona roja area for mongering activities.. Dont attempt to "wander around " in other neighborhoods looking for "hot young women" cause you will be asking for trouble. The only times i have been talked to by the policia was when i strolled away the the zona roja and was accosted by them. One of the times i had to take a $100 "cab ride" back to the border by policia.
If you stay in the zona, keep your head up, and keep your money in different places, like inside your shoe, or in your sock,
Make sure you dont talk to any street touts, who speak perfect english and want to show you "where the young fresh mexican pussy" is.
These guys are bad news, just say no gracias, and walk away.

About the cops - if someone is killing you and they happen to see and be within gunshot range they may lob a few chunks of hot lead in your direction (they could care less if they hit you).

Seriously, if the cops have you somewhere away from witnesses they will plain-out rob you. They are as corrupt as corrupt can be.

If you stay in public view they are less likely to shake you down for fear that there could be witnesses. Also, they will more likely help you in public for fear of repercussions if you are seriously injured, killed or kidnapped and witnesses report that they could have helped you and they didn't.

In past I've had cops surround me and demand that I empty my pockets. I've had them reach toward me to touch my pockets. They hope to find knives (even a pen knife or anything that could be perceived as a weapon...even a nail clipper could get you into trouble) so they can shake you down for big money or threaten to put you in jail for carrying a weapon. Same thing goes for drugs. Also, be prepared to answer a few questions they will ask you to inquire how wealthy you are. They detained me for nearly 10-minutes while searching me and asking me what I did for a living. I told them I repair computers and TVs. Then I made a stupid cocky remark that I also like to fuck Mexican women. One cop laughed, but the other three didn't. Probably best to limit your answers to the minimum necessary to gain your release from them.

When in Mexico I carry just the minimal ID in my wallet as necessary. I leave cc cards and miscellaneous wallet stuff at home or in my car across the border. In past I've worn money belts with the strap tucked well into my underwear (no guarantee, but odd are improved). Hiding enough money and a spare ID in a money belt or socks/shoes to get you back across the border (now passport is required) is a good idea. Be sure to keep enough money in your wallet to satisfy a mugger...otherwise they may start searching/digging for hidden valuables.

Also, in past I've taken risks by traveling alone, but now I shutter when I recall those trips. If you have any opportunity to travel with a buddy or two your safety increases measurably.

Tequila is not the same as Cervesa. Stay in control of your drink especially if the bar is crowded. Try to carry small bills to pay for drinks...I gave a $20 one time and the bar tender slow-rolled bringing my change back. I think he thought I might have been a little drunk. I had to carefully remind him that I gave him a $20 (I was the only gringo in the bar) with about 3 or 4 Mexican dudes standing nearby. I can assure you I bought them all a round to stay on their good side.

Common sense will prevail. Oh yeah, like don't drink the water.
