So I want to go to Thailand, I mean who doesn't? I have everything covered the hotel I want to stay at, the sights I want to see and even the clubs I want to visit. The only problem, I can never find a decent flight out of JFK to Thailand that is less than 1100 dollars and that's coach! That just sounds insane to me. They want me to fork over 1100 grand to get into a crappy seat for 20 hours with one layover?
It would be awesome to fly business but that is 3 grand and change! I don't fly very often so its not like I can rack up miles for a free upgrade.
Does anyone have any tips on getting decent prices on flights to Thailand?

Right now that is a descent price. It is 1300-1500 from Texas. The price is worth it to me. I can go to cheaper destinations, I speak spanish, but I always end up up in Thailand.
If you average it out with food and hotel, unless you are eating and living high on the hog, it comes out cheaper then some closer destinations.
My advice would be to just do it.

You can check the promotions for signing on to a new credit card, some offer very high miles as incentiv e to sign on, 40,000-50,000-60,000 miles and even more can be had for just signing on and charging a bit, enough for a free flight.
One needs to check around and wait till a good promotion comes.

i just paid $1,200 for an economy seat LAX/HKG/BKK on cathay pacific (CX), leaving in april and returning in june. air china (via beijing) and china airlines (via taipei) were cheaper, closer to $1,000. i chose CX as i'm planning to make them my preferred airline (bailed on thai as they stopped the LAX/BKK nonstop and the new one stop times are not so good).
a friend of mine refuses to pay for a flight to asia unless he can get a fare under $1,000. as a result, he hasn't been to asia in several years (his last flight was around $900 on EVA, LAX/TPE/BKK).
try and take a more positive spin on the topic. getting from JFK to BKK in one stop (say on CX via HKG) with a reasonable layover time is pretty nice for a price of $1,200 (although i'd hate to pay that amount for an econ seat w/o in flight entertainment on the seat back in front of me - many UA flights don't have this).
the seat layout on the CX 777 in econ is 3-3-3. pick an aisle seat in the middle 3 section (seats D,E,G). i took the G seat as it appears there is an equipment box that takes up some of the D leg room. chances are the seat btwn D and G will remain empty. so could have no one next to you/crawling over you to get out to use the toilet.

1100 is a decent price these days, even from the west coast. Jet fuel is expensive and demand is high. It may be a long time before Buick's friend ever sees Asia again.

West Coast to Singapore sale for 700 bucks all in about 4 weeks ago, or, as luck would have it, 3 days after I paid 1200 from Texas-MNL
