I culled the following info from a magazine Called "Love Pattaya", issue 2. Free magazines, mostly real estate sales publications, used to be available everywhere. Due to an apparent real estate market slowdown, very few free publications are seen in the usual places, like in front of supermarkets, malls, inside Subway sandwich shops, real estate offices, travel agencies, etc.
The magazine Love Pattaya cited its web site as www.lovepattayathailand.com .
For a fun-loving tourist, one irritant is to discover that the night planned for fun is some sort of official holiday. That means the clubs and bars are closed, and the supermarkets and convenience stores are not allowed to sell beer or liquor. The latter sales outlets are already limited to certain hours of the day, about 11 am - 2 pm and 5 pm - midnight. So, knowing when a holiday is coming up, you can buy a few beers to store for a pre-planned party in your room.
Note that the following days could shift with each year, and the magazine indicated that some days depend on an official declaration.
March 1, 2018 - actual day depends on having a full moon, Makha Bucha Day, a Buddhist day
May 29, 2018 - birth of Buddha, Visakha Bucha day
July 27 - Asahna Bucha day
July 28 - King's birthday
July 28 - Khao Phansa day, beginning of the Buddhist Lent
August 12 - Queen Sirikit's birthday
October 13 - death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej in 2016
October 16 - Awk Phansa Day, end of the 3-month Buddhist Lent
The magazine claimed that other national holidays did not have an alcohol ban, such as the Thai New Year (Songkran in April), Coronation Day, and western New Year's day.
Yes, I have visited Walking Street at night a few times and discovered everything, except for a few eateries and convenience stores, were closed. Returned to my hotel and the staff had no explanation for the closure.
It would have been nice to have seen a notice posted a few days in advance.
