Crazy Motorcycle Guys

There are many motorcycle transportation guys flying up and down main streets and through alleys. Watch your back at all times in Soi alleys as they will run you over without a second thought. Their fast, dangerous and have no clue how to drive. Riding on the back of one is stupid.

Not necessarily stupid. At certain times of the day, the very best way to get around.

I usually negotiate a price, then tell the driver double the amount "by cha noi, chi?" which roughly means go slow, OK? If they can make double the cash by going slow, they will -- and it is not like double the fare is a lot of money.

I had the horror of riding on back of one of these motorcycles to my hotel. The opinions expressed on them here is sufficient reason to reconsider such plans, but after experiencing it, I can testify that it is often the best way to get through traffic, albeit a terrifying ride if during drivetimes.

I feel sorry for the motorcycle driver on my last trip a few days ago. This little 90 pound Thai on a 110cc moped, managing a 300 pound dead weight on the back. It was hilarious. Thought he would lay it down three times. He popped three wheelies and I almost ralphed my lunch down his neck.

I took a tuk-tuk ride in Bangkok once. I have been on the back of a thai motorcycle once. Notice that word "ONCE". I have also been in a war and commercial fished in Alaska for several seasons so I am not going to lay any of that "scariest thing I ever did" stuff on you guys ... But, the "pucker" factor sure is there.
I would like to say play it safe and take a taxi but the cab I hired to take me from Bangkok to Pattaya yesterday made it from Majestic to FlipperLodge in 1:45 (no shit) I think I must have pinched a couple of holes in the fellow's seat cover.

These were my favorites. If I was alone or it was very late at night when baht busses were scarce I rode around on these allot. Very scary. I would even try to pick the craziest driver that looked like he smoked the most yabba for additional thrill factor. Not for the faint hearted but I had fun cheating death. I can not recommend them though unless you have a death wish. I did see a number of young mothers carrying small babies on these things, baby in one hand, hang on the seat rail with the other. If it was safe enough for a baby it must be safe enough for me.
