I've paid $120 to $130 for tropical weight wool suits, $20-$30 for shirts. All best quality I've seen and best price. Great combination.

If you REALLY want to get clothes tailored, and VERY high quality, I'm sorry, but you don't get this in Bangkok.

You do MOST DEFINATELY get this in Vietnam.

I've been there once, It was a great experience, although, for me, once was enough.......

Let me know if you need the name of the tailor in Vietnam, I'll try to dig up the name.........

By Khun_mor on Wednesday, February 12, 2003 - 12:40 am:  Edit

Methinks Dazed is the handle for Depok. He gives prices, e-mail address, phone #, and address, etc- all unsolicited ! WTF is this ! Are we advertizing on this board now? Did someone ask where they could buy light weight tropical suits ?? I know where you can buy light weight tropical pussy if anyone is interested!!!

By Dickjohnson on Wednesday, February 12, 2003 - 03:50 am:  Edit

Seriously Hornman? Even the higher quality suits aren't that good in BKK??? That was my impression when I spent my $$ at the 'famous' majestic suits. It was good but I had higher expectations. Shoot you a mail.

By Ktab27 on Thursday, February 27, 2003 - 07:05 am:  Edit

Hornman - if you can find the tailor in Vietnam. That would be a great resource. Thank you.

By Dickjohnson on Thursday, February 27, 2003 - 01:48 pm:  Edit

Horn, Vietnam sucks? I'm aware the scene there is pretty small.

By Laguy on Friday, February 28, 2003 - 12:31 am:  Edit

I also was disappointed with Majestic tailors on Sukhumvit and the suit I purchased there (and more particularly the dress shirts, which were useless). I later went to Perry's just outside of the Skytrain station near Patpong (at 60/2 Silom Road) and got a much better suit, but for real money, about $650, U.S. The tailored shirts were also good there, around $35, if memory serves me right. This is probably top end for Bangkok.

By Dickjohnson on Friday, February 28, 2003 - 01:08 am:  Edit

That is top end. I got mid end;-) suits from Majestic, 2 3-piece for 27000baht incl a few shirts. But while it's better than JC Pennies it's no Armani. Look, they built a hotel next to their tailor and is building another (big)hotel. So the Tailor must be pretty profitable. The top end suit fabrics are always seperated from the mid and low categories. Laguy, you better get real Italian or English fabric(I'm pretty sure you did). Still kinda high priced. Did you check the brand of the fabric? My next trip I'm going somewhere else, not Majestic. Though they really butter you up.

By Blazers on Friday, February 28, 2003 - 08:35 am:  Edit

27,000 baht for two suits..you were taken to the cleaners. I just bought two cashmere wool suits with silk lining for 5,000 baht in Pattaya and the cut came out exactly like the Hugo Boss design that I asked for. Why the fuck would anyone pay that much for a tailored suit in Thailand. You can get suits for that much in the U.S. I know you might not believe me but the quality is very high and the stitching is flawless, even after dry cleaning. I also had the tailor design a cell phone pocket with silk padding at no extra cost. I could have upgraded to silk/cashmere blend but it still would have only cost me 7,500 baht for 2 suits. Remember, it is not the brand of fabric but the quality of fabric. Any tailor that tells you he is making a suit comprised of Boss, Armani or Versace fabric is full of shit. Dont mean to bust balls, just trying to give you some advice for your next trip.

Khun mor,

Actually I am just a very satisfied customer of Depok and don't give reccomendations/refferals unless I really like the person or product.

In addition Happy to say I will depart from San Diego and 3-17 and be in Thailand until 4-7 looking at businesses and early semi retirement :-).

Innocent again, temporarily Dazed LOL

DickJohnson:
The Perry's suit was made from Italian wool, Dormeuil Royal Optima (Super 120's). I may have overpaid, I don't know, but it sure as hell is better than what I got at Majestic. If you ever make it to Perry's (just a couple of blocks from Patpong) I'd be interested in your impressions.

I might be going to LOS in 2 weeks. We'll see.. I'll check the shop out Laguy:-).

I hope to keep this thread alive...for 10 months. ;) Which is when I'll next be in Bkk.

I got a couple of suits at Raja's about six months ago. Did I pay too much, $200.00 each? I use them for work, so I wasn't too picky. I've received compliments - the suits fit nicely - but the pants on one of the suits is already piling, which should not be the case if the material is the wool blend I was told it was.

Also got 5 shirts. Looked great, till they went to the cleaners. They don't last very long. Got as many ties, but they come with the little 'knock off giveaway' emblem on the ends. I never use them because of that. By comparison, I bought a dozen ties in the Chiang Mai night market, for less than half the price, that are hard to tell from the real thing, and still look very new.

When I go back I'll probably get another couple of 'work' suits, but what I was really wondering about is whether anyone here knows of a truely high quality tailor in Bkk? I visited one place in Siam Square called Marco's, but he wanted 20 000 baht for one suit. That's almost $500.00 I don't mind paying if it's comparable to a $1000.00 suit here, but I'd like to be sure of the quality. Has anyone had any experience with the higher end tailors?

By Blazers on Tuesday, March 11, 2003 - 05:41 pm:  Edit

Best to buy suits in Pattaya...BKK will charge you 4 times the reasonable rate. They are used to Japanese tourists paying whatever the tailor asks and they assume Americans are as cavalier about their money...we aren't.

By Innocent on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 - 07:07 am:  Edit

Again check out Regents tailors, details at top of this thread. They make clothes for my family in BKK.

My brother in-law, from the UK, has been doing business in BKK for six years now and shops there exclusively.

I will admit they are a little slow because of the food and Sigha's Depok will entertain you with while you are waiting.

I went one day to pick up some suits but they were late as most things in BKK. I was treated to a very nice vegetarian lunch and two or three Singhas for the inconvienence.

As Khun mor suggests, I am not the owner of this shop. Just giving some inside information from family in BKK and personal experience.

Try it. Or not?

By Luckyjackson on Thursday, March 13, 2003 - 07:36 am:  Edit

Thank you for the replies. I will not be going to Pattaya when I'm there next. The wife's coming along :-( for a beach vacation. I'll be there a month, but will only be in Bangkok and the south, probably based on Phuket, which I know is not the place to buy suits, (at least I didn't find any good deals there).

I did see Regent's when I was there, (I was staying at the Indra), and I'm sorry but I was not that impressed with the quality. One of the suits they showed me as an example of their quality had the sleeves joined together at a seam running along the outside of the arm. Any quality tailor in North America or Europe stopped doing that decades ago. It's obvious that suit had been put together in a hurry. Also, I simply don't believe you can get true quality for $130.00. I might be wrong, but it seems too good to be true. And you know what they about that.

Like I said, I do not mind paying more for quality, but if MUST be the real thing. Otherwise, I may as well buy a name brand off the rack here, or even get a suit made for myself here which would start at about $500.00 U.S.

If anyone wants to send me suggestion by e-mail, I would also appreciate that. I can be reached at Luckyjackson@hotmail.com

By Luckyjackson on Thursday, March 13, 2003 - 07:44 am:  Edit

Now that I re-read this thread more carefully, I believe it WAS Perry's that I also stopped by. I didn't buy there, maybe I should have. 27 000 baht is about $630.00 U.S. A little more than $300.00 for a quality suit is still a hell of a good deal. Not sure how anyone could call that a ripoff.

By Innocent on Thursday, March 13, 2003 - 04:58 pm:  Edit

Lj,

It's been three years apparantly things have changed. The suits I brouhgt back were not made that way and I showed then a friend who worked at the men's wherehose and the tailor there were both impressed...

*WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW ABOUT THE SUIT BUSINESS*

All you guys are fools if you are buying your suits in the expensive tourist districts such as Nana or Patpong. Let me ask you this, when was the last time you saw an upper-class Thai businessman in one of those stores buying a suit in those Indian retailers? Instead, who did u see in there? Other suckers who speak English and who are tourists? Exactly.

Smart Thai businessmen would not be caught dead in shoddy tourist trap store. Think about it. Thai people don't even like Indian people and think they are quite dirty, let alone make clothes for them. Thus, the only people Indians can get to buy their wares are tourists.

There are 100s of Indian retail tailor stores in Nana, Patpong, and Pattaya, the tourist traps. Once they get your order, they fax it to a factory in Samut Prakan. There are about 5 factories in Samut Prakan who make suits for the 200 or so tailors. Thus, you can go to Tailor A or Tailor B, but they will fax their order to the same subcontractor in Samut Prakan where the labor is cheap. The factory workers are uneducated and will make your suit as fast as they can. Then they send the raw roughout suits to the retail store where you try it on. It is the retailer's job to try to make this shitty mass produced rough suit fit onto your body, that's why they say they may need 2-3 fittings. After they fit you, then give the suit to a local place to do the final touches. Even a place like Majestic does NOT have a tailor on the premises.

My friend is a suit manufacturer for Men's Warehouse in California. I think he knows a little bit more about the suit business than most people do, as he is an "insider" and he is also born in Thailand, the 3rd generation in the family business of making suits.

By Tjseeker on Monday, March 31, 2003 - 08:23 am:  Edit

Vietnam makes SHITTY suits! I
f you want a good custom suit, go to Ying Tai Yurt in Hong Kong, the famous Shanghainese tailor. Some say that Princeton Tailors in Hong Kong are excellent, but I've found the thread they use tends to unravel after a few washings and the buttons they use always crack after they come back from the cleaners (super hot water breaks the cheapie buttons).

By Laguy on Monday, March 31, 2003 - 10:54 am:  Edit

Tjseeker:
In response to your comment that "All you guys are fools if you are buying your suits in the expensive tourist districts such as Nana or Patpong," the tailor I went to in the Patpong area--Perry's--did not have a single Indian in it. The store was owned and run by Chinese Thais and had been there for over 20 years. So maybe you could lower your voice a bit and limit your comments to things you actually know about.

By Luckyjackson on Tuesday, April 01, 2003 - 12:33 pm:  Edit

Tjseeker,

Thanks for your input, but I can't quite believe the situation is as extreme as you make it out to be.

The two suits, 5 shirts and 5 ties from from Raja's that I bought just over a year ago, have been worn regularly during that time, and they still look pretty good - as I said before, one pair of pants is showing some piling of the material, other than that they look new. The shirts were admittedly not very good, but for $10.00, what can you expect?

I'm thinking of buying material here and taking it with me next time to have the suit made there. Again, if anyone can recommend a reputable high quality tailor in Bangkok who could do that for me, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks.

I got a silk suit from Diana Fashion for $90 two years ago. Ask for Kevin. He is Indian (of course) and speaks like seven languages. Overall I had a good experience with them.

I just accidentally found this thread, and have to recommend a place that I think does great work, and at a good price if you can haggle.
It's called D'Oriental Fashion Intl.
198-206 Chula Soi 16, Banthadthong Rd.
Kweng Wangmai, Pathumwan, BKK.
Tel: (02) 611-6675-6
Mike (owner?/mgr?) seems to be the most knowledgeable one there. If you call them, they will come in a cab to pick you up.

Hi Isawal, BKK tailors, corner of Soi 3 opposite the entrance to Soi Nana. Right hand corner, ROYAL TAILORS with Narin, who I know well.

I believe Hunterman knows a great tailor in Pattaya, send him a message.

Thanks for the advice, Redbus I will give the guys on soi 6 a try.

Dave, I will see you in a few days.

There seem to be two classes of tailors in LoS, those who sell those $99 cheapie suits, and those who are more expensive, but do good work.

By Isawal on Tuesday, February 07, 2006 - 03:38 am:  Edit

I think I found a descent one on Pattaya Rd between Soi 6 and Soi 5 will post their details if their work is OK.

By Tujunga on Tuesday, February 07, 2006 - 11:55 pm:  Edit

I've checked out a number of Sukhumvit tailors, listened to their pitches and collected fabric samples. I like Baron's Fashions, which is more established and reputable than many. I've had made 4 fine suits and a dozen excellent shirts in 2004 and 2005, and another 4 dress shirts and a great wool blazer in January 2006.

The Baron's lads (all uncles and cousins, 5th generation in Bangkok) relished examining my supposedly English & Italian wool/cashmere samples collected from other shops, pronouncing some Chinese knockoffs, and demonstrating viscose (polyester) content over a lit match (trust me, you can see and smell the difference), though they acknowledge that some bootlegs are too good for even this test. When in doubt, they send samples to the supposed manufacturer for verification.

In January, they were excited to have landed a deal with a big-name English fabricmaker. Suits (or shirts) are, naturally, priced accordingly to the expense of the material you choose.

Their main tailor is Chinese. They complain that the younger applicants, mostly Burmese these days, don't have the patience to learn the craft (sound familiar?) They do detailed measurements, then schedule one fitting on the shell with the old Chinese fellow. They have their own fabrication facilities.

I've spoken with several loyal long-time Baron's customers who maintain that you will pay twice as much and get four times the quality of what you find at cheaper shops. Of course, much of what you are paying reflects the cost of fabric.

It amuses me that Thais (and Indians) don't customarily wear business suits (except maybe to weddings and funerals), so it's a bit like having a vegetarian prepare your steak. If you have specific requirements, they are only too happy to copy your sample or description, and will be perfectly delighted if you bring them late-model catalogs or magazines of Armani or Hugo Boss or suchlike styles.

I asked them to make some Tommy Bahama-type shirts, but they didn't have suitable fabric.

Baron's Fashions
Shop No. 105-107, Sukhumvit Rd between Soi 5 & Soi 7
Bangkok 10110

Hi Tujunga
Thanks for the detailed info I will be sure to give them a visit when I get to BKK (this weekend). By the way it might be nice to have the name of the person who recommended them.

By Wnose on Wednesday, February 08, 2006 - 03:48 pm:  Edit

Tujunga, if you like Tommy Bahama shirts, then go check out the Thompson Silk shops - they sell very soft silk shirts, with very understated designs, at about half the price of Tommy Bahama shirts.
