Female condom a hit with Cambodian sex workers: report

PHNOM PENH (AFP) - The female condom has proved a hit with sex workers in Cambodia since its introduction by a non-government organisation as part of its battle against HIV (news - web sites)/AIDS (news - web sites) last year, according to a report.

Hin Sophon, manager of Population Services International's HIV/AIDS programme, told the Kampuchea Thmey newspaper that workers in western Koh Kong province and the beachside town of Sihanoukville had snapped up the new-style condoms since they began distributing them last October.

"After we trained them, we've seen that they are interested in them and have used them a lot. Within just one month we've delivered around 5,000 of the condoms to the two provinces," Hin Sophon told the Khmer-language daily.

LOL, I got a whole shitload of those things for my trip to Cambodia next week. I will of course be in Koh Kong and Sihanoukville. I like the female condoms and I think they are safer than regular condoms and they feel way better too. TJ street girls won't go for them. I gave up trying to talk them into it but language is a big barrier there. If I could explain the benefits in Spanish better I might be able to talk them into it but my Spanish is almost nonexistent and all they see is I'm trying to shove something weird inside them and they aren't going for that. I figured for Cambodia I will just shove one in the girl without asking and see how she reacts. It's good to hear the girls may know what it is though and how it works. One word of warning. I have read in some third world countries the NGO's are showing the girls how to wash, sterilize and REUSE the female condoms so cost wont be an issue to impoverished women. So.....I will be sure to bring my own and not use one that is provided by the brothel. BTW they cost me the equivalent of 3000 riel each over here. The article mentioned they are 100 riel in Cambodia. I think I got ripped off. An interesting article.

100 riel is only 2.5 cents. For a female condom? Sounds too cheap..
