how far of a drive is Chiang mai from Chiang Rai? Can you have someone drive you there?

About 120-140 miles. I'm sure it's possible to find someone willing to drive you, as long as you're willing to pay well for the effort.

Air-Conditioned buses also leave very often throughout the day on that route as well and the fare is very inexpensive. However beware there are different classes of buses. Make sure you get on a first class one. There are also private mini-bus services on that route. Transportation is very easy and options are good from Chang Mai to Chang Rai.

usually mongers would go to chiang rai to go to Burma, had you been to Burma and just wanted to view chiang mai.

I used a private van. One way from CR to CM took about 3.5 hours

Anyone have any recent information on Chiang Rai. I heard there was a crackdown maybe five years ago and I don't know if there is any mongering left here (although one has to think there is somewhere, although maybe not for farangs).

Certainly not recent but I was there 5 years ago during a crackdown. There were 3 or 4 western orientated bars that theoretically where gogo's. I say theoretically gogo's because they were not like anything you would find in Bangkok or Pattaya. Offerings were very poor quality, expensive and had uncharacteristically bad attitudes by Thai standards. There were also a few beer bar like establishments which each had a few 30 something bar fly types hanging around. I hear it was good there before the crackdown. I like off the beaten path places and have lower standards than many but even I can't find much nice to say about Chiang Rai when I was there. You wouldn't sleep alone if you were there for some other reason but hopefully it is improved from when I was there or else you are wasting your time going there to monger.
I would very much like to hear any current information myself though. Like I said there was definitely a major crackdown going on when I was there.
Interesting side note. I was in Chiang Rai when the tsunami hit. OBVIOUSLY I was safe ;-) ;-) but... all the way in Chiang Rai I felt the earthquake in the hotel restaurant during breakfast. No big deal but in Southern California style I noted "hey, that was an earthquake" and went on-line and looked it up after breakfast. It is shocking to me that it was a notable earthquake all the way in Chiang Rai.
