Thanks to MongerX who helped me out with the following information.

I'm trying to estimate how much a trip to Singapore is going to cost me, so I asked him some questions regarding taxi costs.

Add 50% surcharge after midnight
A) Airport to Orchard Road: 15-20 Sing
B) Orchard Towers to Orchard Road Hotels: walking distance-6 Sing
C) Orchard Road to Geylang: 6-8 Sing
D) Geyland to Katong or Joo Chiat: 3-4 Sing

Any other estimates for recommended journeys would be appreciated, such as Orchard Road to Chinatown, etc...

Forgot to ask something. I know from personal experience and reading other reports that taxi drivers are often not the best people to deal with. In Tijuana they might tell you the main clubs are closed and try to take you to an MP where they get a commission. In Bangkok they might pester you about tours or follow you to an MP and try to take credit for bringing you there. In Panama they might try to charge you for waiting. Is there anything I need to know about taxi drivers in Singapore City?

From my experiences, Singapore taxi drivers are even more legit and less corrupt than American taxi drivers. I dont believe there is commission for them anywhere they go. They are friendly but not corrupt. The only thing you might experience that I find unusual is that they will ask you to put on your seatbelt and you will hear a beep noise every time the car starts to go past the speed limit. All the surcharges are a pain in the ass but taking a taxi is the way to go. The MRT system there is pretty efficient too if you are going to places near the stop.

The food in Singapore is fucking incredible....go to the hawker places and enjoy.

And Geylang is walking distance from the MRT if that's on your "to do" list (I certainly hope it is!).

Singapore cab drivers are almost always very honest and there is no tipping either. If you tip a cabbie he will very surprised. The only slight scam is at the airport (and now at the Harbor front ferry terminal) were people will approach you asking if you need a cab. These guys are trying to book you into a mercedes taxi that will charge I believe a 30 Sing flat fee. It's cheaper if you just go to the well marked taxi stand and queue.

Actually, I was approached with S$45 at the airport, but the place was BUSY and so that might account for the st00pid high number!!
