California 2 Guesthouse - Phnom Penh, Cambodia - Just returned from a six day pleasure stay at the CA2. It is a small 12 room guesthouse/bar/restaurant managed by Jim from San Diego. Nothing fancy but the location, atmosphere and staff make it an excellent value. It's located on the river front about a block from the Royal Palace. Room rates are $15-&20 and the hotel is guest friendly. Cheap drinks and excellent Cambo/Mexican food. Short ride to Sharkey Bar, Martini's etc. Jim has a wealth of information on the scene in PP. Jim is also an excellent resource for the biking crowd. I believe he's covered every paved road in Cambodia by now ... and most of the unpaved ones too as he's an off-road kinda guy.

Be sure to order a fish taco when you're there. If you've never had one, you'll be pleasently surprised.

I visited california 2 frequently, jim the owner is very hospitable,
If you do want a room there you have to book early as he fills up quickly.
The children selling books etc, surprising to me came right inside the bar area selling there goods, jim and and the staff didnt mind and also seemed to know them all.
One cute girl who was 13, i ask if she would marry me when she was 18,
who said that she would have to wait 5 years ,I dont think she would want to marry a fat balding 50 year old by then, LOL

California2 closed.
when i arrived in Phnom pehn i went to sharky bar were i saw jim and said Hi, adding ill see you tomorrow in California2, but he replied that he did not have his bar any more? the reason being that the Landlord would not renew his lease and so jim had to close his place and is now employed in sharky bar as one of the managers.

where did you stay in PP ? i was going to make a side trip there not too long ago and planned to stay at CA 2. but website said closed and i changed my plans. i saw a photo of the place on their website and the location by the river looked awesome.

i see guys in thailand with t-shirts from CA 2 all the time. too bad it is closed.

any update on new spots to stay is appreciated.

Been going inside the new California2, its bigger than the old one with a nice decor, also has a pool table and rooms. when i first tried to find the place i missed it, its on the river front just where all the western bars end after street 104.
