Anyone tried the sleeper train to Chiang Mai?
By Wombat88 on Sunday, January 16, 2005 - 07:11 pm: Edit |
Yup. Mind you, I took it from Chiang Mai to Bangkok, but it's the same track.
I always get a sleeper room (not the cheaper berth) 'cause they're just so much fun. It's even more fun if you're with a young lady. Thailand is still one of the places in the world where you can afford a sleeper all to yourself. Take advantage of it. Load yourself up with snack food, though; the stuff on the train is OK, but having your own larder is better

Where can i book that train in Bangkok?
By Wombat88 on Sunday, January 16, 2005 - 09:23 pm: Edit |
Just go to the train station (Hua Lamphong Station) and make your arrangements. It's between the Jim Thompson House and the edge of the Chinatown district, so you can make an adventure of it. Keep in mind that the train can be booked solid days in advance. I seem to recall that I paid about 1200THB. I've never tried, but I'll bet some of the travel shops can get you a ticket oo. Don't forget that if you're on a budget and can sleep sitting semi reclined, there are some very good bus services as well.

I took it to Nong Khai to get to Laos with Jaul from Happy a gogo a while ago. Good idea to take the night train so you can sleep the entire time and fuck a few times as well. The problem is that it is now cheaper to fly with Air Asia than it is to take a train and you lose a lot of time taking the train...up to you

Ah, c'mon Blazers, you relax a few hours, have a nice sleep and the next day you're in a new city. Man, you can fly anywhere these days, but how often are you afforded the opportunity to travel in Victorian style, eh? Take the overnighter and you save one night in a hotel. That makes a ride on the train viturally free!
Besides, to the best of my knowledge, the airlines still frown on passengers screwing during the flight.

Yes, took it from BKK to Surathani on my way to Kok Samui in 1999 for our honeymoon.
It was excellent.
And the marriage just keeps getting better...

I have taken the train from Surit Thani to Bangkok coming back from Samui. I had First Class accommodation which consisted of bunk beds, a sink with running water and a small area to stand. It was tight for space but comfortable enough and definitely private for some nookie. I ordered a rum and coke from the porter expecting a glass and he returned with half a bottle of SamSong, coke and a bucket full of ice. That cost me well about £3! The tickets were not expensive for two, less than a reasonable hotel for one night and I had two fun sessions, a comfortable night’s sleep followed by breakfast in the room. I would recommend it. The only downside is you have to get a boat, then a coach to the station, if you view it as a small adventure and you’re in no hurry this is not a problem.

The Hualamphong train station can be easily reached via the new subway, it is the southeast terminus of the only line.
The Chiang Mai sleeper train is not too bad, you leave about 8 or 9 pm, and get in to Chiang Mai about 8 in the morning. The best way to go is to stop at travel agency a few days before you want to leave, and they will put together a train-hotel package that includes transfers from the train station to the hotel. I paid 700 baht a night for the hotel.
