Another entertainment complex with beer bars and clubs.
Sukhumvit road, between Soi 13 & Soi 15. Very close to the Thermae (after hours bar).

My friend is in BKK now (and I will join him in a few days). He's done Nana Plaza and claims that the Dollhouse at Clinton Plaza blows away any of the places at NEP.
Anyone care to support/deny this claim ?
By Frenchie on Friday, August 24, 2001 - 10:49 pm: Edit |
I wouldn't say it blows away Nana. It is a good bar, but it's a bit small. When I was at Nana in April it was great. Then in May there was a real shift in the place. Drink prices went way up and the entire feel of the place changed. I went back to Nana a few weeks ago and it's just not the same place it once was. I don't like the place anymore. Now, I prefer Soi Cowboy and Eden club when I'm in Bangkok, but by far I prefer Pattaya where I am at this moment.
There is real talk that the entire Clinton Plaza complex will be shut down soon. For some real insight into the issues surrounding this read the weekly reports from Stickman's Guide to Bangkok.

Thanks Frenchie - it sounds like Clinton Plaza just got the ax as you alluded to. Oh well, thank god there are other choices. Eden Club is high on my list and I may make a run out to Pattaya (I'm only in BKK for 5 nights).
FYI:
Most, if not all the LOS?BKK websites are closed due to a recent posting and a fear of the operators of a reprisal against them. Stick was especially fearful of a govt. lynching of him as an example of why the current administration is cracking down on the nightlife.... Scary-S**T!
Please keep us posted while your'e there.
Cheers

Yes, things are getting worse every day here. I saw a map in yesterday's Bangkok Post that showed the proposed "entertainment zones" for Bangkok. They do not include any of Sukhumvit area, Clinton, Soi Cowboy, or Nana Plaza. If the government gets it's way the only places that will remain will be shitty Patpong and a strip north of Sukhumvit where most of the Body Massage places are.
I've heard that Clinton is closed for good. I'm in Pattaya now, so I can't confirm this until I return to Bangkok next week. The government has said that they will not close current venues unless the owners violate laws. No new permits will be issued for areas outside the proposed zones and the hopes are that eventually places will close down and bars outside the zone will disappear.
Personally, I suspect that the government will jump on any small infraction or even frame bar owners to close them down soon. It looks like that's what happened to Clinton Plaza.
I read a post on another site that said that the Golden Age in Thailand has come to an end. Last week I wasn't so sure, but now I have to sadly say that I agree.

i was in clinton plaza last night at the dollhouse. it is still open although this is my first trip to BKK so some part of it may be shut down (i have no point of reference). i will say that the dollhouse sucks. my buddy must have been wasted when he said it was the best place around. not even worth a trip over there at all.

I'll be there in a couple of days to check it out for myself. Then I'll make a thorough post.

I was at Clinton on Sept 2&3 to see what was left of the place. The only places open were the beer bars near Sukhumvit road and the Dollhouse in the back off to the far left side.
I went into the Dollhouse for about 30 minutes, but I couldn't take the depressing atmosphere of a gogo bar with almost no business and certainly no future. The remaining girls sensed this, I'm sure. It's really a pity since the Dollhouse in Pattaya is fantastic and with time the Bangkok "branch" could have developed nicely.
Now I've heard that the landlord has ordered all remaining bars to close by the end of October. I don't know what will go into "Clinton Plaza", but it seems that it won't be part of the sex scene anymore.
I was never overly impressed with this place, but it did make a nice stop while walking between Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy. There was real potential there, but it now ranks among the first victims of the tight-assed Interior Minister.
Actually, contrary to initial reports that Purachai (Interior Minister) closed Clinton Plaza, Clinton Plaza was supposedly closed since Bank of Asia, who owns the land, decided to do so.
As of this week (Nov 12), things are starting to slowly get a tad active again, after several weeks of closings and fully clothed a go go at Dollhouse (yawn). Will keep you all posted as things evolve.

Clinton Plaza is on N Side Sukhumvit between Soi 13 and Soi 15.
All places have reopened except for Rock Hard which moved to Nana Plaza. As mentioned before, gov action should not be cause for alarm. Clinton Plaza back in gear but may take time to get full swing.
Dollhouse the best lineup of the bunch but not great. Didnt get there til 11:30 so maybe better earlier. Two very attractive ladies but neither seemed too interested in customers. One with ponytail dressed in purple turtleneck sweater and tight white skirt stayed avoided customer interaction when not dancing. Rest of the ladies dressed in orance bikini tops with wraparound sheer hankerchiefs around waist, no panties. Other attractive lady actually made nasty face at customers that were talking to mamasan to ask her to come over. I noticed similar attitude among top ladies at Dollhouse in Pattaya too.
Hollywood next door very few ladies. One attractive outside but eating. One very active and decent looking but too old on close inspection. Very friendly mamasan that was actually attractive, better looking than some of the dancers.
Candy Store less ladies than Dollhouse but more than Hollywood. Cute door lady and cute dancer that was barfined shortly after entering. Another very friendly dancer had nice face but slightly big. Got impression mamasan and most ladies here were new and not really sure how place should operate.
Entered all except The White House which appeared to have many dancers but stage could be seen from door and lineup looked poor. May go in before end of trip, will update if I do.
Also many freelancers in beer bars surrounding go-gos. Did not look carefully to inspect available ladies.
Between 1:45 - 2:00, everything shuts down but Thermae Coffee House a little to right/east of Clinton still open. Lineup is mostly older ladies. Will write separately.

As of May 2002, this place is still dead. I don't know how the remaining clubs and beer bars can survive with so few customers.

Clinton Plaza appears to be closed. I will post some pictures on this later. All access to the back area has been blocked off. They did a good job blocking it off in certain places, not so good a job in other places. Don't know if the Dollhouse is still open, as the barrier to blocking it is easily gotten around.
But you can go to the Dollhouse on Soi Cowboy if you need a Dollhouse fix.
Some of the beerbars in the front still seem to be open.

I hope this isn't a bad sign of things to come. (or not to come) lol

Rasta,
I don't think it is. There has been a dispute over this land by the owners and the leasees.
The owners want to develop this land and make it into a hotel or something, I think.
The leasees mention the fact the have valid leases for at least another year or so. That is just want I remember off the top of my head. It is something like that though and not a crackdown on nightlife areas.

Well I can comfirm that the Dollhouse is still open as are some of the beer bars on the left hand side of the plaza. There is a big banner that reads "Dollhouse and Beer Bars open" that is strung right in front of the "No Entry" barricade. Funny stuff. A ladyboy struck a pose right in front of it while I was taking a picture. Will post later.
Somehow... the more I learn about Thailand, the less that sounds strange. Thanks, Xenono

I really liked Bill's Bar. It is right on the street so you have a great 'moving feast' of girls walking down the sidewalk, a very friendly and efficient staff, and good food. The bar girls there are nicely varied in style, look and age, and above average in looks. Drink prices are about average for the area and the 'bar fine was 500 Baht. It is right next to the Thermae, a freelancer's and after hours bar that is a Bangkok institution. This makes it a good spot for spotting freelancers coming and going. Another thing I really liked about Bill's is that the girls there aren't too pushy. They are friendly and flirtatious, but not at all pushy. I kind of enjoyed this because it was easier to zero in on a girl that I wanted without having to get rid of the more aggressive ones than sometimes latch onto you as soon as you enter some of the other bars. It is also more like picking up a girl in and less like going with a hooker.
Overall, the place just had a good vibe and is well worth a visit. I know I will be back.

Clinton Plaza RIP!!! I wanted to go and have a good time at clinton plaza, but , place was razed to the ground to make room for some new fancy hotel. what a shame!!!. gong to miss Dollhouse****///

Nah, no bigge. I did like some of the small beer bars around the area and the White House was kind if interesting. But if you need a Dollhouse fix just go the one on Cowboy. It's bigger, newer, nicer and has a pretty damn good kitchen!
