Cambodia is one of those places where a trusted, dependable, and knowledgeable driver/guide is helpful.

I highly recommend my good buddy Ben Wee, a driver for me and my buddies on numerous occassions, including several trips lasting days. He has an intimate knowledge of the always changing p4p scene. At least a dozen guys from this site have used him and numerous others from other sites. He says he now has a new car and that action is still good in Phnom Penh.

Ben is a real honest cat and helped me in a couple precarious situations where in one day I was: Accused by mamasans that I was NGO, had gangsters try to take my girl for the night out of his car and he helped get rid of 12 year old pimps trying to pimp out girls disgustingly young.

Ohh I've stood him up ....lets see ... around 9 times. Yet, he remains a valued contact of mine who I exchange info with on a regular basis.

A great driver is the secret to enjoying every day in Phnom Penh. Wound up using three different drivers this last trip and it was interesting then to have a baseline to compare them. Merlin makes a great point about the ever changing scene and I believe thats the difference between a good driver and a great driver is his connection with the scene and willingness to carry you to many new places.

We used Ben for 5 days. Nice guy. It was more than we needed him. I think two - three days would be plenty. The main tourist sites are all nearby and the one Killing Field that is a ways out is well taxied.

Ben knows the nightlife well, but after a few nights so will you. He did take us across the river to a few temples and sites that we would not have seen. He also came into a few brothels with us and made sure all the transactions were proper ($ 5 + tip short time places)

He suggested cancelling after the 5th day as he was out of places to take us.

I just got back from a weekend in PP, I used ben wee cos of references from this website....big mistake....i said i wanted to stay in california 2 but he said it was not as nice as the 'royal highness' at $20. I said ok and we went there, rooms were ok but nowhere near worth the $20 which could have got me riverside. Also i was charged for the whole day when i only used him for an evening, and the next day was charged the whole day again when i only used him from 10 till 4. The guy in the pictures (tall and slim) is not the ben wee you get when you write to benweekh@yahoo.com. I had a plumpish guy about 30-35 yrs old. All he wanted was $$$.

When your in SE asia you will use a lot of taxi drivers
Just use the one your personally happy with
Avoid recommending a Taxi driver to other mongers
as the taxi drivers poor service will reflex badly on you

Well the same could be said for recommendations of bar, girls, hotel, restaurants, etc. As always with recs, YMMV-- we all know that tho

I have to defend Ben Wee. I used him in February, 2006 in my first trip to Cambodia and he is really good people.

He told me that he tries drive everyone himself. He said that when he had a conflict, he has given business to others, but he was unhappy with their performance. Like other good people, he is trying to do the best he can. You cannot ask for anything more.

The comment was not against Ben Wee (I am sure he is a lovely guy who has earned himself an excellent reputation) but was directed at the driver who impersonated Ben and did everything but live up to the reputation which Ben has earned himself.

In the early hours of the morning he gives me his little tour of toul kok, bars,guest house brothels and were you can see freelancers.

I see no need at all to have a driver's phone number. They are pretty much all the same. The prices for motodops are 50 cents to a dollar and tuk tuks are a buck to two bucks for 99% of what you will be doing here. Sightseeing can be negotiated, usually around $15 for most of a day plus refreshments and/or lunch usually. Do not go with any driver that says he will get you girls or take you to a massage. That is just too risky for what could end up ending very bad. The places that guys needed transportation for are no longer there.
