Walkabout is mentioned in 2014/03 Wallstreet - One Night in Phnon Penh
quote:I was closer to Walkabout, so that’s where I headed. I had a kind of negative preconceived notion about the place, because I read an article on www.vice.com that made it sound like I would really be scraping the bottom of the barrel, if I actually made it out alive. But since they called it Phnom Penh’s sleaziest bar, I knew I had to give it a go. http://www.vice.com/en_uk/read/the-walkabout-is-cambodias-sleaziest-bar
The bar on the street level has no door, so you can see inside from the street. The place didn’t look bad at all – there was some English football on the television and an even mix of guys and girls, none of which peaked my interest. I sat at the bar and ordered a soft drink as I had had my fill of beer for the evening. They serve food upstairs and the Walkabout is also a hotel. A few minutes later, a thin Khmer girl came downstairs and sat across the bar from me and ordered a beer. From my vantage point she had a nice face and we kept making eye contact. As she was almost finished with her beer, I called the bartender over and asked her to send the girl a drink. She ordered another beer and asked me to come over.
I sat down next to her and still liked what I saw. Her name was Anee and if she was to be believed, she worked as a shop girl and was looking to supplement her income. We chitchatted a bit – she had no kids, wasn’t on the rag, and I got a good vibe. I told her I was staying at the Flamingo down the street and asked her if she wanted to come back to the hotel. She said sure and time and money were never discussed. I usually make a point of going over the business particulars, but something told me to just wing it with Anee.

This place has closed, in 2008 the cambodian government passed a law saying all commercial sex were rebranded as entertainment and relocated to karaoke and hostess bars.
I have memories of this place open until the morning smelling of pot and never getting on the pool tables they being fall of vietnamese freelancers.
I went there once...not in its heyday but it was good times...
Is Sharkey's still open?

Unfortunately concarne Big Mike Hsu owner of Sharky has just passed away, RIP. Where Walkabouts closed because of the new law's Hsu kept sharky open by turning it into a Rock bar and I think its a registered hostess bar where you can pick girls up.
