I spent a few hours here last night shooting the breeze with Mano Ponderosa. He just took over this place a few weeks ago, and it's a cool joint for hanging out, with great music to boot. Flaming Moe's is located on Soi 22. About 200 or so meters down from Sukhumvit, on the right, in a vast collection of beer bars.
Really enjoyed talking with Mano, and also enjoyed drooling over the spinner Filipina with the great rack that was in there last night. So Mano, what's the story on her? :-)
Definitely recommend for a low-key place to chill out.

Great meeting you, last night. When you get back to Bangkok, give me a ring. There are a few other venues I'd like to show you that are not particularly well-known. I think "my" bar is probably 1-2 girls away from being what I envisioned. Trust me, I'm working on it. The problem is finding attractive girls that I haven't already slept with (as my girlfriend helps out in the bar). I lucked out with my (ridiculously busty) cashier, in that regard. As to the Filipina, I've got some bad news for you. She's already another guys live-in girlfriend. A guy, I might add, who isn't too happy with me as he, too, was negotiating for the purchase of this bar. If anyone's interested, here's our web-site:

Please note, that the staff has not been updated. Of the women pictured, only "The Twins" (trick photography, by the way) are under my employ.

Hi Manos, congratulations on the launch of your new beer bar in Soi 22. Khun Leigh said that the opening party went very well, he had a blast. Sorry I couldn't make it but I will swing by some other time. BTW, it's a smart move having your girlfriend work in the bar you own. It will keep you focused on taking care of your business and the customers, and not your own girls!

Very creative website !! Chok dee to your new adventure. I'll be sure to stop by on my next visit.
BTW
I believe the original Flaming Homer- later to become the Flaming Moe was based on a hefty dose of cough syrup as it's base. You wisely left this out !

Thanks for the well-wishes, all. I'll post here to let you know when the staff photos have been updated. Last night a buddy took a ton of pictures of my new staff (I'm talking about the girls, not my johnson, wise-asses). So the web-site should be updated within a week. This has, indeed, been an eye-opening adventure and a roller-coaster ride of delirious highs and abyssmal lows...and we've only been open for 2 weeks...By the way, if the current name and web-site had not already been well-established, I was actually considering renaming the place "Pub Hombre". Well, maybe my next joint?

Mano, you will have my sympathy it's no bed of roses running a beer bar in Thailand. Once you get to feel the headaches you can really appreciate the next division of headaches, which is the almighty go-go bars. At times you feel like the Boss at other times you just think you are a Zookeeper! It sure is a rollercoaster but it's a thrilling and fun ride!

Thanks for stopping in, Red. We all had a great time, each of the three times you graced us with your presence. And, thanks to all hombres for the support. As I only posted about "my" bar about two weeks ago, it's great to have hosted 4 hombres, already. A major Moe's web-site update (with many new photos) is coming within the next couple of days. I'll post here as soon as it's online.

Belated congrats Mano! Your decision to own and operate a beer bar inspires me as you're actually living the life I can only dream about now....and you even have a Filipina? Do U know if it's difficult to get a Filipina a tourist visa to LOS? I'm actually thinking of taking my Filipina HK to Phuket/BKK next year and may need to leave her at your bar while I explore NANA
:-)
Perhaps you can recruit some hottie Filipinas or Colombians as "hostesses", like they used to do in Japan and Korea, a new marketing angle?
By Mano_poderosa on Tuesday, December 13, 2005 - 12:03 am: Edit |
Thanks for the well-wishes, Merlin. "Our" Filipina does get alot of comments. She's a tiny spinner who is always dressed in an incredibly revealing fashion. Murasaki, for one, was quite taken with her. But I don't mean to mislead anyone. She doesn't work at "my" place. She's the live-in girlfriend of one of our regulars. He's had her in Bangkok at least since I met him, about 6 weeks ago. I've never inquired as to how he managed this. Rumor has it he has a Thai wife comfortably ensconced in a huge home in one of the provinces. Rumor further has it that he makes his living selling viagra. I'm far from the only one in Bangkok living a surreal life...

Merlin, the PI and Thailand are both members of ASEAN, allowing visa-less travel for your honeyko into Thailand, or any other ASEAN country. I don't know what the time limits are, but she can just arrive and get a stamp in the passport just like you. And if MP had Filipinas working his bar like the hottie I saw, I'd be spending a helluva a lot more time in there than I already did.

We're generally open by 4:30 pm, often earlier. Always open by 5 pm. We close as late as the police allow...or as late as there are customers. Our latest closing, this month, was 6 am. We closed tonight, Tuesday, about half an hour ago. It is now 3 am, local time. I look forward to meeting you, brother.

There were a lot of fiery hoops to jump through if I wanted my Filipina GF to come to Thailand to meet me there, so I went there to get her. When we went through customs together we walked up as a couple, I handed them both our passports and Thai customs let us both pass through no problems.
The biggest problem you'll have is shopowners will walk up to you and say "hello", then turn to her and speak a hundred miles an hour in Thai. You better learn the phrase: "pooying Pilipina, mai poot Thai." It's not the best way to say it but it gets the point across (just like "ao boomboom tood, dai mai?" for ass banging )

Good to hear from you, brother. If your last trip to Bangkok was any gauge, we should have a helluva time, now. I've learned alot in the last 7 (or so) months. I really hope that we'll paint the town red(-der). Besides, now that I have a live-in girlfriend (yeah, that whole thing stuck), you'll give me a great, and moderately believable, excuse for going out late at night. By the way, what the hell happened to you in October, before I had all of these complications?

Hi Mano, it was great to visit you in Flaming Moe's. I like your bar and the service was great. I will definately write a review in my new nightlife review column. However, I just can't help but notice the total lack of "flaming posts" like I received..."spammer, pimp, shill!" Everybody is so friendly about you owning a bar in Thailand. Sorry but I don't even own a bar and yet I have received some very prejudiced comments. I guess it must be an American thing?

By Khun_mor on Saturday, January 28, 2006 - 11:54 pm: Edit |
Dave
It's not an American thing. At the risk of offending someone I consider a friend ,I think Mano has been a bit more under the radar than you were when you first hit this site. It was painfully obvious that you had your bar's and NEP's interest in mind as your number one preoccupation. Mano has just mentioned his bar and website more or less as an aside and has let it go at that. You cannot compare your approach to his I'm afraid.
I believe it is a difference in personality basically. You are passionate in your love for BKK and NEP not to mention your bar itself. Once Hollywood was the place to be above all others now it's Angelwitch . I totally understand your enthusiasm but you also have to understand the scepticism generated by that enthusiasm.
I hope I have not tread on your toes too crudely and look forward to buying you a drink once again in the Paradise that is Nana Plaza.

Glad you finally got a chance to drop in, Dave. And, I certainly appreciate the photos. Thus far, owning the bar has been in equal turns exhilarating and frustrating. Now that the Wednesday pool league has started, I have the opportunity to have my ass kicked by bar owners from all over Bangkok. The boys from Sin handed us a 7-1 drubbing, this Wednesday. By the way, they were pretty cool guys, and damn good drinkers. At least the darts team is still undefeated and I haven't run out of scotch, yet...
Manos.
By Dave_the_rave on Sunday, January 29, 2006 - 03:31 am: Edit |
Hey KM, I understand how you feel. But I still think that Mano dropped his link in there "himself" and never got anything but a positive reaction. Also I wonder if certain people will walk into his bar and rip it to shreds...the girls are all fat, there aren't any customers...blah, blah, blah! Just curious to see how they will react that's all.
The past is the past, I now review many places and I am objective. So, I guess some good has come out of my involvement on Club Hombre, as I now have my own nightlife review column. This is a good site but it can be hard work at times, and it is only one site out of many. So far I have received 100% positive feedback for my column. I also get a lot of positive comments from CH Members privately (especially lurkers), so this does inspire me to march on through it all. Mano is a gentleman there is no doubt about that and I have nothing but admiration for his achievements. You will like Flaming Moe's...

Hi Mano, the current dispute has no reflection on you by the way. You are a gent but also a straight shooter I respect that. I wanted to post up the photos for you as I like Flaming Moe's. I just wish that I could visit more often, your hospitality and Tiger draft beer is superb! I know the guys from SIN and yes they are good drinkers. You lost the pool but won by gaining good bar takings! I don't post that much on CH these days but wanted to pass the photos on. Never will quite understand this site, I have posted hundreds of photos, yet as the old saying goes..."No good deed goes unpunished!"

Walkingdude, pleasure hanging with you, as always. I was happy to meet your friends, as well. The last time we got together, when I'd just moved here, I had a great time. Now, as you know, I'm a bit more constrained, based upon the business and my domestic situation. That being said, you did provide a great excuse for me to duck out of the bar for a few hours. When one of your friends told me that he really dug my bar (and this while we were sitting in a gogo) it was really gratifying. That being said, as a small business owner in a city with alot of competition, it probably doesn't take a whole lot to gratify me. Give me a buzz when you guys return from Pattaya, assuming you can still walk, and we'll hook up again. My buddy from Chicago will be in town until the 28th, by the way. He's in shock and awe after his third day in Bangkok, by the way...

Hey Mano seems we will see you again tonight. My small group has decided to spend another day in BKK. I have been using your place for a primer bar that past few nights. A place to get a few before heading out to the gogo's.
For other fellow Hombres old and new. If you are in town and want to know current events 'Flaming Moe's' is a perfect solution. Wish Flaming Moe's would of been around when I first started coming to BKK. I'll see you tonight Mano.

Outstanding. Look forward to it, brother. By the way, if you guys have plans on going to Cowboy, later, that would fit nicely into my schedule. My darts team plays Dollhouse in Cowboy, tonight...yeah, there's a gogo bar with a dart board. We'll probably leave Moe's around 8:30. I plan on playing about one match, and then ducking out to check out Cowboy. Hopefully we can sink a few in Cowboy after the warm-up at Moe's.

Good seeing you again, Redbus. Sorry we didn't have much time to chat but, as you no doubt noticed, things were a bit hectic in the bar. You picked a great night to drop back in, as the place was packed with hot soi 33 girls celebrating the birthday of one of our pool team members. By the way, the Eminem look-alike guy doing the video was actually Canadian, but everyone assumes he's a yank. With any luck, my IT guy will be back from the States within 2 or 3 weeks and I'll get some of the party photos up on our website. Sorry I missed you last night, but I had to take the aforementioned pool team out of the bar for an away game. If I don't bump into you again this trip, have a good one, brother.

Manos,
Likewise. Your bar is a good relaxed place with good people hanging out there, and I recommend that others make a stop by when in Bangkok.
Just so others know, as Murasaki mentioned the bar is in a complex of beer bars on the right hand side of Soi 22 as you are walking from Sukhumvit, perhaps a couple of hundred meters from Sukhumvit. However, at the entrance to the complex the name Flaming Moe's is missing from the sign listing the bars but nonetheless just walk into the complex past a few other beer bars and you'll find Flaming Moe's towards the back.

Good to hear from you, Val. Yeah, it has been almost two years since our late-night roadside cocktails. I've learned so much (and so little) in those two years...
The bar opens at 530, but it's rare for anything to get going in the first hour or so. I'm typically there from 7 or 8 to close, although it's not unusual for me to be there from 530 on. If I'm not in, my manager can reach me on the phone, as I only live a five minute walk away and my wanderings seldom take me much further than Patpong. Hope to see you again soon, brother.

The party was even better than expected. It was the busiest night in bar history, topping even my own birthday from last year. We closed after 8 am, and the place was absolutely heaving until well after 6. And there were, as predicted, alot of hot, drunken soi 33 chicks in attendance. The downside? I hit my head on a low-hanging metal Jack Daniels sign outside of another bar on my stagger home. Nothing says "good party" like blood on the pillow...
