does anyone know a medical clinic where they will throughly check your gf for std's?
By Khun_mor on Monday, December 05, 2005 - 01:35 pm: Edit
Bumrungrad Hospital outpatient clinic is cheap and reliable . You get results in a couple of hours. When I was with Da we would both go and get tested first day of every trip. Takes most the worry out of BB for both of you.

Khun Mor is by far the expert here but by all accounts Bumrungrad is said to be the highest standard hospital in Thailand. I am registered with them and have received excellent service. Very good value-for-money compared to Western prices. BTW some of the nurses could bring a man back from his death bed! ![]()

what worry?
By Khun_mor on Monday, December 05, 2005 - 06:17 pm: Edit
Dave
Totally agree about the nurses. Every time I go there I think maybe I should come up with some kind of illness to get myself admitted to the hospital !! They have few if any nurses like that here in US !! Mostly very overweight Filipinas .
As for price - the office consult with the Doc and HIV test was 600 baht total !
DM
The worry in our case was on her part . She knew me after all. I told her she did not need to do the test but she insisted . I did not argue - I knew her as well . :-)
There are some guys on this board who do worry about such things I beleive.

I made the mistake of putting too much ear wax remover (i know, gross). I went to the ER at Bumrungrad, was seeing an Ear Nose & Throat Specialist in 30 minutes. Got served water or OJ while waiting from some hottie in a nurse uniform. Got the wax sucked out. Got lectured by the Doc about proper ear hygene. Paid my bill and left.
Everything there was top drawer, modern and new. Customer Service is a priority there.
Bill? 700 bhat I think.
Try walking past a US ER for less than $2,000

In the UK we have "Red Cross" & "St. Johns Ambulance" volunteers. These women are SO scary, that most guys would not leave burning cars if these beasts are outside your burning car wreck! As for UK nurses I hope they are not paid by the pound it would cost the UK a friggin' fortune! ![]()

Having visited the Bumrungrad Hospital as both an in and out patient I can 100% vouch for the quality of service and the beauty of some of the medical staff. When I stayed overnight after a particularly bad case of food poisoning I was being checked out by the doctor and was introduced to the morning shift, one of the nurses was so beautiful I felt like being sick all over again just to have her tend me! Seriously though I feel safer here than any UK hospital.

As someone who has been in dozens of US hospitals (no, I'm not deathly ill, it was part of my old job), Bumrungrad is the finest medical facility I've ever seen. And, yes, alot of the nurses are more than a little easy on the eyes. To say that it's budget friendly would be an understatement. In fact, the mind boggles that this is probably the most expensive hospital in all of Thailand. Now, if only the price of scotch in Thailand was as proportionally low as the price for medical services...
Manos.

How much are we talking about for a complete check up to include all those Test for STDs, and also the other test that everyone should get every few years?
By Mano_poderosa on Monday, December 12, 2005 - 10:11 pm: Edit
Defender, I'd be shocked if it hit the 4000 baht mark, as I had an relatively minor outpatient surgery on my leg that came in at less than this. If you're getting the blood-test and the whole 9, I'd guess 3k or less. This is only a guess, but it is based on my own fairly recent experience at Bumrungrad. If you went to a clinic, it would likely be even cheaper.

I would recommend the Anonymous Clinic, especially if your girlfriend is Thai, but regardless of her nationality. The Clinic, which is part of the Thai AIDS Research Centre of the Thai Red Cross, on 104 Rajdamri Road is within walking distance of the Patpong/Silom area, about a block north of Silom on Rajdamri. (Take the Skytrain to the Rajdamri Station, head south on the west side of Rajdamri Road, and at the next stop light it is on your right hand side). This is one of the top HIV Research facilities in the world involved in dozens of international research projects on HIV. The clinic itself does testing very inexpensively and is of extremely high quality (much more experienced than Bumrumgrad) because of it's oversight by the Red Cross, and participation by and funding of international NGO's as well as medical companies. As the name suggests, you can get tested (rapid tests for "immediate" results, 200 baht, as well as more conventional lab tests, 80 baht with results in 2-3 days I believe) anonymously, and will assist in providing counseling and treatment, often at relatively low (govt. subsidized) costs. They can also test for syphilis, Hepatitis B, as well as HIV and HepB viral loads and CD4 counts. Phone: (662) 2256 - 4109. They do walk in's Monday through Friday afternoons, and Saturday mornings, except public holidays.
For more information, they have a website in both English and Thai at:

Complete check-up with more test and doctors than I can count. Total 12,600 at the Bumrungrad.
I also went down stairs and had a complete eye exam finding out I need a different prescription for my eyes and did a laser treatment for the whitening of the teeth. All was first class and more than half the price from the states.
By Hunterman on Tuesday, December 20, 2005 - 09:08 pm: Edit
Do they have a particular package name? Or did you just ask for a complete check-up? Where exactly did you go (I'm familiar with the hospital layout)?
By Mano_poderosa on Tuesday, December 20, 2005 - 11:54 pm: Edit
I don't know where exactly to go for the check-up, Hunterman, as I've not had it. But I do know that they have brochures in the orthopedic department, and likely most other areas, outlining the prices for all of their physical check-up packages.
Manos.

How fast can you get STD results in BKK? Is it accurate because my neurologist told me that the result only covers before six months. If you are infected with in the past six months the result wont be able to tell you.
By Khun_mor on Wednesday, July 18, 2007 - 01:12 pm: Edit
Bumrungrad got me my results within 2 hours.
You seem to be equating STD tests with HIV tests
Your neurologist oversimplified a bit. The majority of HIV tests will turn positive within one month . A very small percentage of individuals will remain antibody negative for up to 6 months so that is wher he got his number.
You can circumvent that by doing direct DNA testing for the virus rather than the antibody test. More expensive but if you are that worried it is positive within days of infection.
I'm fairly sure Bumrungrad can do it as they are totally up to date in all respects of medicine but not positive as I have never asked for it.
By Sojourner on Wednesday, July 18, 2007 - 09:05 pm: Edit
It depends on which STD you want to know about and how accurate you want it. There are rapid HIV tests that can give you the results in 20 minutes that are as accurate as most blood lab tests, but if you wnat to get checked for Chlamydia or gonorrorhea, those rapid tests have accuracies that are not as good, maybe 80-85% sensitive (i.e will give you a positive if you are infected). Khun Mor is right that the most commonly used HIV tests test for antibody, not for the virus directly, and the antibodies don't appear until 6 weeks or up to a few months after initial exposure. Most clinics however won't do the more expensive and more time consuming direct virus test, which will tell you a few days after exposure if you are infected. If they do, you'll certainly pay more for it. Bumrungrad is certainly capable of doing it, but whether they are willing to do it instead of the antibody test is another question.

When you start pissing razorblades and/or your dick changes color and looks like it's about to fall off, it's time to test.

Or when you're about to end your trip and head home to the wife...

Or when you don't have health insurance and your dick starts dripping while you're still in a foreign country and it would cost around $600 to get cured in the US . . .
Not to change the subject or anything, but now that I think about it it's been rather peaceful around here lately, hasn't it?
