I will making my first trip to Thailand next week. Any advice as to whether I should stay in Bangkok or go to Pattaya.
Also what is the best way to get to Pattaya
Any advice in general is appreciated

Do both-- a few days in bkk and then a few in pattaya... They are different and you need to decide for yourself how you split your time.
From BKK-- get in a taxi and negotiate the rate before getting in. It usually runs 1200 baht.

What Dm said. You'll wanna experience both. Some guys prefer Bangkok. Others are hardcore Pattaya supporters. But not too many guys hate either destination. I live in Bangkok. I prefer Bangkok to Pattaya. That being said, I still love going to Pattaya for the occasional weekend get-away. Both places have their own unique charms. If it's your first trip, you really should see both.
As to getting to Pattaya, you can also take a bus from the Ekamai station in Bangkok for under 120 baht. Busses leave every half hour from 4 am until at least 10 pm. I think it's a good option if you are traveling solo and don't have much luggage. If you have alot of bags, or are with buddies, the cab is probably a better choice. Have a good time. Nothing like one's first trip to Thailand.
