British and irish pubs in BKK/pattaya
| By Khun_mor on Thursday, March 16, 2006 - 07:44 pm: Edit |
I would go nowhere near a British pub if England is playing that morning, unless you're in the mood for fighting. Even witout England playing a Brit Pub during World Cup may be a bit dicey
The games will all be in late PM early AM hours. I was in BKK during the French World cup 4 years ago and the best games were usually on at 2 AM. Every bar with a TV has them on . The world cup is s HUGE event in Thailand.Everyone stays up to watch and goes to work bleary eyed the next day.
Gulliver's in on Soi 5 - down the street from Foodland on the right as you go in from Sukhumvit.
With 2 AM closings now who knows where you can watch after that time ??

Indeed, stay clear of the UK guys during the cup games, regardless of who's playing. Shaved head, walking around in the sun while drinking beer all day cannot have a good effect on activity between the ears, especially when there isn't too much in there in the first place. But if you want to see some street fighting maybe Pattaya is the place to go. I've been saying for years that some day the Brits will bring one of the football riots they're famous for to Thailand, and it'll change the face of tourism in that country for the under-35 set. But I think this would be more likely in a backpacker destination than Bkk/Pttya.
On the other hand if you want a real party atmosphere try to find where the Brazilians are hanging out.

Last World Cup they set up huge monitors in front of World Trade Center to watch them and sit at the outdoor beer bars there. Everywhere you go will have it on TV. I watched many of the games from Patpong 2 outdoor bars and even one while getting a BJ in a BJ bar.

In a word Redbus - yes. At least it seems that way if you use the flotsam in Thailand as a norm.
Many bars in BKK and Pattaya banned British football fans - especially the skinheads- during World Cup in fear of violence . Just look at the trash walking the streets of Pattaya - drunk and looking to pick a fight with anyone and everyone. Sure there are US ,German and other nationality idiots but the Brits seem to have a near momopoly on drunken bar fights.

No offense meant, redbus, I was referring to a certain type, which my Brit friends refer to as "the lads" (or ladettes) when in a good mood, and in much worse terms otherwise. As one put it, "who would have thought that Thailand would be the next Marbella?"
They wouldn't be able to juggle all those factors you mention above, it would be more like "Let's go to _______ and get pissed!"
I'm sure you know what I mean.

yes Bendejo i do know what you mean,
mainly spain, Thailands to far away
And this ones for khun_mor and other worried mongers
In your Hotel always remember to check under your bed, inside the freezer and closet
There maybe a brit skinhead there

I am not worried about the idiots - I just have more important things to do than fight a drunken skinhead hooligan. You are blind if you insist they do not exist in Thailand. They are all over friggin Pattaya and are IMO a disgrace to your country. As I said I have seen plenty of Americans who have embarrased me as well. They do it largely in other ways than fighting though.
There was even an article in a British paper, quoted in the Bangkok Post, that reported a poll of English males who travelled extensively. Two of the most important activities mentioned for a good holiday were drinking and fighting. Having a good dust up I believe they called it.
I did not make up the banning of English soccer fans from bars ,that was a fact during the last World Cup. I saw the signs posted on many bars and it was widely reported in the Thai media. They did it for a reason obviously.
I'm sure you are a proper gentleman as are the vast majority of British citizens. There are also more than a few who are not - that's the truth .

ok i think we are getting off the point, thank you all for your help,it seems the soccer will be pretty much shown everywhere "happy days",im from england also and must say we cant deny the fact we do have organised hooligans who go with the main aggenda for a trip being a good fight, though can assure you the only rough and tumble i would want in LOS is in the bed.Thank you all again and i will be between bkk and pattaya 29th may until 20th june so if anyone wants a beer or someone to watch soccer with just send me PM.
Where as i am no shakespere, this being my second trip and with how much ive gotten out of this site, this time i will be taking notes and pics in order to post a trip report on my return.
Havnt even got there yet and just by saying "return" im already feeling post thailand blues.

Ziggy -- nuff said. I will likely be in Thailand - if I do not go back to AC -- in early June. Would love to buy you a beer if you don't want to have a good fight . I save my energy for more fruitful pursuits myself. As the years go on I need to save more and more of it as well. I'll let you know if I decide on LOS. Look forward to meeting you. I am not anti British - just ask Dave the Rave or WickedWilly.

what about me i would like to have a drink with you khun_mor, but not a fight,
I am in LOS in june

Can vouch for Khun Mor, definitely not anti-British.
One reason I prefer BKK to Pattaya is that there are a few too many of my fellow countrymen who lets say to be kind, act like plonkers when they are in Thailand and this is totally unrelated to football. I dare say the world cup will bring a few more. Saying this, the reputation of British soccer fans is now blown out of all proportion, it is nowhere near as bad as it was 10 or 20 years ago, there are now far worse fans in Europe, its just the British fans reputation still prevails.

Anytime Redbus. As I said I am still torn between AC and Thailand and have only 2 weeks in June. My lil 19 yo spinner from this last AC trip miss me too much already, and I saw plenty of others I wanted to go back for. The bars in AC remain much more fun than the present day LOS bars- and are open 24/7 in some instances. Just like the good ole days in my favorite country - before being ruined by Toxin Shitawatra and his " New Social Order ". Also there's always Jakarta that I have not explored yet but am considering strongly.
IF I'm in Thailand I'll PM ya my cell phone . There was certainly nothing personal in my post - just an observation over many years in Thailand.
