I will be in Thailand in October... I have a choice of a few cities and am trying to figure out if Songkhla near Hat Yai is going to give me a good time and a true \\"thai\\" experience?

It seems to be my best opportunity, but if it sucks, I\\'ll work on going somewhere else

Got a bullet proof vest ??

Not exactly where I would spend my time right now if I had a choice. The Muslims are still picking off 2-3 people a day around that area -- when they're not setting off bombs that is. Not my idea of a relaxing vacation.

What in the world made you choose Hat Yai ?? Were your other options Beirut and Baghdad ??

I figure Hat Yai is almost as dangerous as a typical US city by now. I'd visited it a few times; although I enjoyed myself, I don't generally recommend it for anything but an extended stopover between Thailand and Malaysia. There are a lot of venues catering to the Malay and Singapore punters. Songkhla is very laid back. The beach has no surf and the water is warm as a bath. I never found any action there, but that's not surprising as I'm not so good and finding sunuk joints.

What exactly are you looking for in your true Thai experience?
