DAVE THE RAVE WEBSITE
Following many requests I have decided to launch my very own website. The official launch for the website will be in December 2006.
My sincere thanks go out to the many friends that I have met on Club Hombre. My involvement on this board has helped me to launch my own website. It will be a lot of work and currently it is only a "skeleton" web page, but I think this will be a fascinating venture. Thanks guys!
By Redbus on Monday, November 13, 2006 - 03:49 am: Edit |
I will be looking foreward to seeing your website, i have seen your write ups before and great idears, im sure its going to be a success.
chok dee.

Dave, Good luck with your new venture. I have read almost everything you have written and since my first trip to LOS last Christmas You have been a great help. I have spent more time in AW in both BKK and Pattaya than any other bars. Someday I'll have one of the girls point you out for a word or two. This Christmas will be my 4th trip so you can see I'm hooked
By Baxter on Monday, November 13, 2006 - 09:04 pm: Edit |
I'll definitely be looking forward to the roll out of the web site. It was great meeting you at AW recently. Sorry I didn't make it back later in the evening as promised, but a little gal over at Voodoo had other plans for me.
By Dave_the_rave on Tuesday, November 14, 2006 - 03:23 am: Edit |
Thanks Redbus, it is friends like you that have inspired me to create my own website. Cheers!
Tdog123, thanks for your kind words. I am going to need kind words with the mountain of work I have just given myself LOL! Also, I have written some silly stuff too on this board. That will stop now that I don't post when I get home drunk LOL! "Hooked on Thailand" I have been hooked since 1988 - no hope for me! Cheers!
Thanks Baxter, great to meet you too. Pleasant change to talk to a real veteran of Thailand. You and Khun Mor could reminisce for hours.
Thanks guys for your kind words and support. Bangkok & Beyond...

OK guys, just for you here is a sneak preview. My website is not officially launched yet, so it is not much more than a skeleton site. Please have a look and let me know what you think...

Get rid of the stars/flickering background-- it is a visual distraction. If you stick to thai images and your articles only (in terms of design), you'll fare better. Black twinkle background with lime green text is not very pleasing to the eye.
By Dave_the_rave on Tuesday, November 14, 2006 - 01:05 pm: Edit |
Hi Don Marco,
I will pass your comments on to my webmaster. So far you are the only guy who doesn't like the Home Page. Eventually it will be Bangkok skyline beneath the twinkling stars. Bangkok & Beyond...
By Tdog123 on Tuesday, November 14, 2006 - 03:45 pm: Edit |
I've already bookmarked your site and you can bet I'll be a regular reader.
By Sandman on Tuesday, November 14, 2006 - 04:31 pm: Edit |
I agree with DM. Twinkling stars are a distraction and change that Lime green background to a red, yellow or tamer green.
My eyes hurt looking at it....really! Of course, it is JMHO.
By Solid808 on Tuesday, November 14, 2006 - 06:29 pm: Edit |
Thanks for the sneak preview...by any chance, is the webmaster the same person that did the website for Rock Hard A Go Go at Patong Beach?
Keep up the good work!
Solid!

Hi Solid,
Thanks! No, my friend John just has his own website, John is not even a pro webmaster. He used Microsoft Front Page and put this together in three days! We use the excellent services of a web hosting company...US $125 for one year!

Dave,
Your site is a good idea, but I'm assuming you posted that preview to get brutualy honest opinions.
Here's mine: "Dude, that design is brutal"
FrontPage is tough to work with for professional quality, but it can be done.
Here's one of mine done with FrontPage: http://www.guyplace.com . Nope, it's not mtv.com, but it's cheap and makes money.
With FrontPage it's best to keep it simple, especially if you're an information oriented site. Fancy isn't necessary. Pleasing to the eye and an easy read are VITAL for return visits.
Proper design is also vital for search engine ranking.
"John is not even a pro webmaster" goes without saying. Nor am I. But you might want to lay out a few Baht to get someone who has a better grip on design.
As a fellow Hombre, I'll help you for free if you want. Just don't drop any Baht/Bucks/Pounds promoting the site until you get the design right. They'll be wasted.
Good luck.

Thanks guys,
Most people care about the essential thing...good content and this is what counts. I'm just starting out with my site, but I have over 18 years experience in Thailand, most of which has been spent living and working with the Thai people. This makes an enormous difference. I am fortunate enough to live the dream that so many only could wish for. In saying this I think it only right to share my knowledge and information, and that is why this site was born. Bangkok & Beyond!

Hi Derek,
Thanks for your support! I could see that a new voice is needed on the net from somebody who has the experience, insight and who is in the battlefield. I think this will be a fascinating journey. Bangkok & Beyond...

There is definitely a gap in the market which your site should be in a good position to fill. It complements the content of Stickman's site nicely, and I particuarly like the newsletter section. Some nice girls in the galleries too!
As a matter of interest, how many of these are current Angelwitch girls? Girl #2 in gallery 2 is a real hottie and I would be tempted to hop on the next flight to LOS if she is still around.
Looking forward to seeing your site expand to its full potential over the next few months. But I know from personal experience just how much work goes into something like this.
By Dave_the_rave on Tuesday, November 21, 2006 - 01:29 pm: Edit |
Hi Icarus,
Thanks for those kind words. Yep, it is a lot of hard work and endless hours, and also it tends to be a thankless task at times. But, I am a determined guy and I will give it my best shot.
During my time on Club Hombre I have learned a lot too. Given time I hope my website will grow into something meaningful for all concerned.
Thanks for your encouraging comments!
By Don Marco on Tuesday, November 21, 2006 - 03:51 pm: Edit |
Dave if you want to have a broad appeal, I highly recommend a few webcams with a live feed. Then make viewing free for CH members and charge the other wankers. That would even make me look past the terrible web design ;)

Hi Guys,
Us Brits love the banter, keep it coming!
DM - good point about the web cam but I'm just starting out. The Boss is considering it for a new Angelwitch website. Regarding the website I just wanted to get up and running, because the timing is just right. I will develope the site further in time - Rome wasn't built in a day!
KM - I would love to have a web cam there, but I would never get away with it. Nice thought though.
Concarne - I come from the Midlands in England, my Grandfather was Canadian so I have some mixed blood. I have visited Canada but unfortunately I never made it to America. I would love to have seen America before 9-11 - IMO America was at its best then.

WEBSITE UPDATE - I now have three "Night Fever" nightlife newsletters up online. I have started to include images in with the text. There is some current Pattaya news included.
Slowly but surely the gallery will develope too. Photos are located under "Eye Candy".

HANRAHANS IRISH PUB - SOI NANA
This is the latest addition to Soi Nana. Located directly opposite Hillary 2, just a bit further past Dynasty Hotel this enormous two storey Irish bar castes a huge shadow over Hillary 2 opposite. Very plush with modern amenities and it is very stylishly furbished.
I think it will draw more people into Soi Nana and generally that is good news for the area. Eventually they will provide meals but they will have the usual teething problems that most new bars have. A welcomed addition nevertheless.
The owners say they have a plan to bring hot babes in and I will let you know if and when this happens. If they can get a lot of hotties it will be a case of "When Irish eyes are smiling!"
http://www.DaveTheRaveBangkok.com
By Khun_mor on Wednesday, December 13, 2006 - 11:53 pm: Edit |
HMMMM
Where are they going to find Irish lasses in Thailand ??
Seriously the more choices the better .
I wish them success. Especially with the bringing in the hot babes part !
By Dave_the_rave on Thursday, December 14, 2006 - 01:44 pm: Edit |
Hi Khun Mor,
If they get babes you would be amongst the first I would tell. I am not doing a "shill" job here as you know me better than that. OK, it is good news for Soi Nana; a new, plush place but the part about the babes will have to be proven.
At worst it will be a posh new place to stop off and sip a beer, and perhaps have a nice meal. As you well know getting it full of hotties could be a lot harder than they think, unless they have a solid plan and good contacts. This place has enormous capacity and potential.
By Tripper on Thursday, December 14, 2006 - 02:02 pm: Edit |
I saw them working late the other night installing new plasmas. I like the look of it. I will definately pay it a visit, who knows? maybe I'll find the next Rose of Tralee in there too?
By Dave_the_rave on Friday, December 15, 2006 - 12:08 am: Edit |
Yes Tripper, I totally agree it is a beautiful bar, so your Irish eyes will be smiling! It will take them time to get established but if the freelancers like it this could be a budding Gulliver's. It might drag guys away from places like Bully's and Huntsman's Pub (Landmark Hotel). These guys also own Robin Hood Pub in BKK.

Dave,
I stopped by at Hanrahan's Irish Pub about a week ago, and although the place looks nice, and their waitresses are numerous and cute, I got the impression that they aren't available for takeout. It was early when I was there (about 7 pm) and there weren't a lot of customers (about 20 waitresses in uniform to about 5 customers) and no freelancers, so we'll have to see just how good a place it is for anything more than a beer and some friendly chatter.

By Dave_the_rave on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 - 09:55 pm: Edit |
Sojourner, very true only time will tell. Hanrahan's belongs to a pub chain and they are not predominantly girly type bars. Expats and guys who want to chill out love relaxing in a British style pub.

Nice new design Dave. About 10000% better than that first cut. You must have hooked up with someone who does web design on a regular basis?
By Sandman on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 09:02 pm: Edit |
Nice job Dave. Much improved over the intial site.
BTW-I think you meant to say "which" instead of "witch" in the Thai culture section.(yes I read it)
That part could be very valuable to guys that travel there for a couple of weeks per year or "noobs" to Thailand. Their culture may seem strange to westerners but to them it is very important. All about face (and having a good time until the next level of life)!
And, you know much better than most on this board because you live there!

Thank you all very much for your comments guys. To answer you all in one post...
I was lucky to find Mr Ed, a very talented Web Wizard (30 year old Canadian guy who lives in BKK). Together we worked on the design but it is Mr Ed who deserves the credit for the work. On long pages Mr Ed has even put the tab menu along the bottom for your convenience. Now, I feel that I have the Cyberspacecraft needed to journey to Bangkok and Beyond...Cheers!

Hi Val, great to see you again and I am pleased that the lovely Miss Wei was there. Thanks for the Dallas Cowboys T-Shirts, that was very generous of you. I used to follow the Dallas Cowboys when I was younger. In the days when the Dallas Cowboys were winning most of the Superbowls. Dan Marino was the best Quarterback around in that era. The Cowboys had prolific wins over both the Pitsburg Steelers and The Greenbay Packers. Those were the good old days!

Bangkok and Beyond...
Despite the terror warnings and threat of another police crackdown there have been few changes implimented. Most bars still close in Bangkok at around 2:00am, but Angels Disco in Nana Hotel is open until 3:00am. Late night places like Sanuk Bar (in the tunnel) just inside Sukhumvit Soi 5 are open very late.
Pattaya closing times remain the same as before too with go-go bars closing at around 3:00am and then the usual selection of late night venues like Lucifer's and Secrets are open late.

I did get the message from my staff. A shame really as I have not seen you in a long time. Hopefully next time. Where are you now? Also, how has your LOS trip gone this time around?
I saw Wicked Willy tonight, he is just loving Jakarta. Epi passed through BKK recently, but I see fewer of the Hombre's these days. I just wish Thailand's so called government would get its act together. The Baht is way too strong against the US Dollar.

anyway... wanted to ask you what is the weather like in July? is the heat and the rain really bad? and what's it like in Pattaya?
I'm trying to understand why the slow season is so slow??
By Dave_the_rave on Friday, April 06, 2007 - 02:21 pm: Edit |
Hi Rocket,
July is definitely the LOW season. The weather will not be as hot or humid as March until the end of May (hot season). Therefore your timing is good. It will hopefully be a bit cooler with not too much rain. Most Westerners will be enjoying the summer in their own countries in July and NOT travelling to Asia as much. This is why it is LOW season - Western winter (November until February)is "high season" here in Thailand, because obviously Westerners are escaping the appalling arctic conditions. It is the best weather in Thailand too - like a cool summer with the least rain and humidity. July is not too bad for weather and there will be MANY MORE available bargirls. Far fewer tourists in "low season" to contend with...

Dave, question for you. There was a discussion on another thread on how much it takes to live in BKK each month. I figure you are the authority on this, what do you think?
Also, what about hooking up for freebies or non pros? Easy or not if you are living there.
Your feedback would be appreciated.
By Redbus on Wednesday, April 18, 2007 - 10:14 am: Edit |
The only reason i got a freebie [in Cambodia] is to put a girl up for the night after working in the bar if she`s stuck for a place to stay, mind you, they don`t always let you do them.
By Dave_the_rave on Wednesday, April 18, 2007 - 02:17 pm: Edit |
Bloody hell Redbus, she must have been desperate! Joking just joking!
Sniper, you can live very cheaply here in Thailand but it depends at what level you want to live? You can live like a lot of Thais on 5,000 - 15,000 Baht (one small room, no luxuries), or a school teacher on 20,000 - 60,000 Baht (studio apartment with few luxuries), or a bar manager 30,000 - 150,000 Baht (one bed apartment/townhouse with some luxuries, or company employee 80,000 - 500,000 Baht (your money will go far).
Regardless of your salary or allowance you have the option of a "sliding scale" which means you can live as cheaply as you feel comfortable with. Too many new expats overspend at first - too many girls and partying way too much. You do have to discipline your spending unless you are lucky enough to be rolling in it!

Freebies & Non Pros? Traditional Thai Women...
Study the Thai language and study Thai culture as thoroughly as possible. Do your homework on what Thai women really like and dislike. Set yourself obtainable goals - initially just hanging around the right places (away from nightspots) can get you great results with the right approach. Shopping malls and Department Stores could help you break the ice. At first just smile at a shop assistant you like, but check for a wedding ring first though! Have a friendly chat with some girls in MBK or a good store like Robinson's. Keep the conversation "light" and just be yourself. Try to smile and be relaxed and LISTEN ATTENTIVELY to the girl if she decides to speak to you.
I think that shops, stores, malls, even cinemas are good hunting and/or training grounds. With some traditional Thai women it can be a very slow process. NEVER touch a Thai woman that you don't know well. NO sexual talk. If you are shy try shop assistants - if it goes tits up you can walk away or pretend you were really interested in buying something. Give it a try what have you got to lose?
By Khun_mor on Wednesday, April 18, 2007 - 10:02 pm: Edit |
Very good advice Dave !! Having courted and eventually married a "traditional Thai good girl, non pro" I totally agree with what you said. It is a very slow process. If the only experience you have ever had with Thai women is with bar girls-- you do not know Thai women at all !! It can take weeks to even get to the hand holding stage. You have to constantly be very aware of cultural differences and face a minefield if and when you ever meet her family.
If you ever meet a "non pro" who is an easy conquest you can be assured she is not the normal Thai girl. She may not ask you for money but rest assured her hobby must be collecting farang and you are her latest curiosity.
By Dave_the_rave on Wednesday, April 18, 2007 - 11:32 pm: Edit |
Greetings Khun Mor, I hope that you might fly to Thailand for a trip sometime. Coming to BKK?
I agree that some guys just don't know how much time and effort is involved in "courting" a traditional Thai woman. My wife Ann said that guys have to even be careful of University girls and shop assistants, because bargirls come in many shapes and forms. Another good area to try would be Thai restaurants. I know guys who have eventually dated and had sex with Nana Hotel hostesses - it was free but a lot of time and effort. Only a loose Thai woman would sleep with a relative stranger. The FARANG has to ask himself, "Why would this good girl be interesterd in me?"
If the Thai woman is super friendly, speaks good English, seems a bit naughty and touchy, touchy -this is certainly NOT normal. It is quite tricky because freelancers and part-time BG's are everywhere. Therefore, try outside of the main cities. I know guys who had freebies who they pulled from Kon Kaen in Isaan. Just study the girl a bit first she might have a jealous Thai man!
By Sniper on Thursday, April 19, 2007 - 08:12 am: Edit |
One of the things that keeps me from moving to BKK is the fact that meeting non pros would be next to impossible.
I don't really drink and I know that partying everyday would get old, so I would want to start going out on regular dates eventually.
I've been looking on the real estate sites for rentals in BKK as well as employment, the consensus seems to be is to take a pass on BKK until the political problems are worked out.
Too bad, financially it seems like a good fit for me since my savings would generate a 64,000 Baht income each month and I know I am employable even in BKK.
I think I'll stick with Colombia for now.
By Dave_the_rave on Thursday, April 19, 2007 - 02:28 pm: Edit |
Sniper, as much as I like Thailand I have to agree with you. It is definitely NOT a good time to move to Thailand, unless you get an offer that you cannot refuse. Wait and see what happens, many people think the US Dollar will get a better rate. Some people even think Thailand is in for a crash again. Thailand is in turmoil politically and it is great to visit, but I would NEVER advise anybody to move here at this uncertain time. Wise to wait.

Thanks Dave, I appreciate the candor of your posts and your website is very good.
By Dave_the_rave on Thursday, April 19, 2007 - 10:29 pm: Edit |
You're welcome Sniper. Hopefully things will settle down here politically and economically, but with this Government, the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing!
Thailand is losing massive investment deals. One American expat I know said his company cancelled a deal worth half a billion US Dollars - now that is going to hurt and it is only one example. The Thais are shooting themselves in both feet at the moment.

I thought I raised you better than that. # 2 -- way too much makeup and the professional pose and pic is worrisome. Stick with # 1 -- she looks like a sweetheart who will rock your world or at least mine.
If you pass on her give her my business card and tell her I'm coming to get her soon !!

KM and Blumpy
I too find the girl in the second picture... compelling.
Here's my reasoning: Yeah, the first one could be TAUGHT to perform all the disgusting, depraved and unsavory things I enjoy the most but why not take advantage of the second one that's already been turned into a dirty slut? Instead of initiating a training program to convert that sweet innocent woman into the "essential slut" the second one will, with only a verbal prompt or two, launch into a full assault on my crotch.
I believe the term "plug and play" applies here.
Perhaps you're NOT Blumpy's father. You know, I used to deliver "milk" in your old neighborhood. Like father, like son...

Here in Bangkok Soi Cowboy is doing a steady trade. There is plenty of open "showing" with both topless and naked go-go girls. Closing time is between 1:00am and 2:00am depending on the police. Pattaya is closing late again - go-go bars are open until 3:00am and discos/clubs/bars are open until the very early hours of the morning.

Hi Murasaki, it was great to see you in Bangkok. It has been a long, long time since I saw you last. I must say that you looked well.
After Dark Asia is available all over Pattaya. The bus station, some go-go bars, news stands and even the odd book store. Bangkok is harder to find a copy that's for sure. You might have missed out if the mag was between issues.
Kind Regards,

In davetheraves column above he talks about opening a bar or gogo saying that you need location location location, as Donald Trump will tell you this is not strictly true? The eden club was opened in a soi that know one new of, and because of the eden club being in Soi 7/1 other bars then opened there, i can see why dave is only a manager and not an owner.
By Murasaki on Sunday, July 27, 2008 - 06:11 pm: Edit |
Flawed logic, bus. Although "no one" knew of soi 7/1 at the time, it was and still is an excellent location. It is literally outside the Nana skytrain station, and situated half way between Nana and Cowboy. It is location location location.
By Redbus on Monday, July 28, 2008 - 10:02 am: Edit |
I do agree with you murasaki that soi 7/1 is a good location being outside nana skytrain and halfway between nana and cowboy, but ill stick to my guns thats its not always Location Location Location.
Also i would like to bring your attention to your above post to dave which you sent in may 18 2008,now dave did not answer this untill july 27 2008 "WHY" because he used you so he could advertise his friends porn mag and his web site, i dont like it when dave says to clubhombre members "come and see me in my gogo club" then ignore them, also he is not a guru, you know more than he does.

Redbus, you are certainly showing a lot of negative attitude these days. Not the guy I used to know. You sound desperate for a good time in Thailand. By the way, lower Sukhumvit is a great location, most people know that.
Why should I not promote my website and/or After Dark Asia magazine? The models are beautiful, available Thai babes, not Penthouse models you will never meet in your life. After Dark is the best go-go girly mag in Thailand. It's a great guide to finding HOT go-go girls. Those that wish to visit my website do by their own choice.

Because this is a web site of people who are sharing information on their activities as users of the services rather than sellers of the services. You are virtually the only member here who has an axe to grind.
In addition to this I find Angelwitch in Pattaya the biggest rip. The only use it has for me is to go in with a girl so she can watch, and buy us each one drink. If I go in by myself, I feel like the guy who fell into the tank of sharks in the most expensive tank in town.
The magazine is also a commercial enterprise aimed at promoting certain gogos in Pattaya. While the girls pictured may have worked in the bar on the date the photo was taken, they are most often not representative of the quality of the place. Some poor soul not knowing better goes in looking for a girl in the photo and the odds are she's not there or is waiting for her steady, or wants some huge tip. Then the poor soul gets pressured to deal with an army of fugglies and leaves after he's spent 2,000 Baht on worthless fuggly drinks.
Pattaya is the ultimate adult playground. It has more gogos, beer bars and adult venues per sq mile than anywhere. The poor soul has a better chance of having fun without advertising jumping him and is smarter looking to the opinions of people who are in town and or have recently been in town shagging after the girls themselves, spending their own money on the same activities. This is what Hombre was created for.
While I have spent much less time in BKK, every time I've gone to Angelwitch BKK it was a waste of my time and money as well. I always had much better luck in other venues in Nana and in Soi Cowboy then in Nana.
I don't think I was alone in that conclusion, but on the other hand Dave the Rave was never going to say avoid my bar.
Not meaning to be offensive, but you have a website, and I didn't think it was this one. If you want to post on this one, maybe you should be paying ad fees to help with the upkeep of Hombre. Lord knows that he's suffering these days and could use the help.
By Laguy on Saturday, January 31, 2009 - 01:55 pm: Edit |
One of the problems with relying on posts about bars and/or tourist services on a website such as this is that it is much easier for those who like a bar or service to post something complimentary than for those who dislike said bar or service to post something uncomplimentary. In many instances those who have been burned stay quiet rather than post something and then get flamed by the proprietor of the bar or service. There are exceptions, of course, as this thread illustrates, but these exceptions do not come close to making the playing field even.
I have had very bad experiences with some of those businesses that have been touted on both the Asian and South America boards notwithstanding that most of the posts are highly favorable to these bars or proprietors of tourist services. OTOH, in those instances where I have privately let my experiences be known, I begin to hear there are many others who have had similar experiences but are disinclined to post about them given the fear of retaliatory flames.
As the saying goes "Let the Buyer Beware." This goes doubly with regard to testimonials posted on this and other sites with similar opportunities for touting.

My two cents - let Dave post. The other members will tell the real story...

PG:
I don't have a problem I guess with him being allowed to post, at least if Hombre doesn't, it's just what LAguy said. I wanted people to know what it's all about. I think that's what Redbus was doing as well.
We save our money and spend it on trips. Dave works to get us to spend our saved money with his businesses. This kind of arrangement on an internet board will always bother me, but it does even more so when I think that Angelwitch is in my opinion a tourist trap.
By Catocony on Saturday, January 31, 2009 - 06:09 pm: Edit |
LA,
I think everyone should post the good and bad, with the caveats that things could be different the next night. I've had a great time in a place while another guy there has a shitty time the same day. A week later, I have crappy time and he has a good one. In general, the more data points, the more accurate the overall information is.
We all know that hookers migrate more than wild birds, but you can generally get a good feel for a place for at least a short period of time. Constant feedback from all is needed.
I think a lot of guys don't post because it sounds like the same old, same old. Well, all data is good.
By Laguy on Saturday, January 31, 2009 - 06:47 pm: Edit |
Cat: Actually, I'm talking about the owners and managers of the various businesses and their business ethics. Some of these guys are vindictive as hell and woe be those who post any negative stuff about them or their businesses here or elsewhere no matter whether justified or not.
By Gurock1 on Saturday, January 31, 2009 - 09:31 pm: Edit |
On this rare day, I find myself agreeing with both of you, with the caveat that readers should be aware when the post's author has an axe to grind. The board would be better off with more reviews from mongers even when they might write things that are redundant or less bright. Readers can sort that out for themselves. It just burns me up a little when someone uses the board to advertise their own business for free.
By Catocony on Saturday, January 31, 2009 - 09:53 pm: Edit |
LA,
I know, whenever I've posted about Brazil_specialist, he comes out with the "what, I'm a great guy, you're always picking on me" then some of his defenders pile on. When Greg, the dipshit manager of the Medellin Mansion, blasted Smirker when he posted of his negative experience down there. Personally, I think that if business owners are going to be members and post, they should be prepared for good and bad. Don and Ken, Kenn, some of the others - they don't really tout on here, they answer questions, which is the way it should be.
I don't know a thing about Dave the Rave, and since I don't pay that much attention to the Asia board, I have only a vague idea of some of the history. But, in general, IMHO when an owner comes on here and blasts a member, I hope everyone notices and stays away from that business.
As we all know, some of the expat guys who work mongering-related businesses are good and honest, but a lot are parasites, scam artists, flat out thieves. I think it's because most mongering venues are places to spend money, not make it.
Unless you're retiring with money to spend - or are in the great situation of working for US pay while living in a mongering spot - then eventually, you'll turn on your friends/customers. I've seen it a dozen times in Brasil, and I saw it first-hand when I lived out in Korea. From running scam investments, trying to pimp out girls, overcharging for apartments, that and more, all the way to flat-out stealing money and belongings. Mongering is a drug, really, and guys who move to mongering spots, if they don't keep their heads and their bank accounts, they go feral and end up worse than the locals in trying to shake a buck from the visitors.
By Gurock1 on Sunday, February 01, 2009 - 01:05 am: Edit |
For the most part the generality of those statements is as true in Asia as it is in Brazil, I guess, as I know nothing about Brazil. The whole concept becomes different if the person lives in the locale and much more and badly if they work in the industry. It's not to say that there aren't good guys working in the industry. I'm just saying it becomes easy for them to become as you describe. Or they may just become a little more one sided pimping their own business and putting down all others. Then the less experienced on these boards get led down garden paths that are counter to the point of the board.
Also if you become the one to point out why that poster has become off base, greedy, or just counter productive to the board, it becomes easy for the friends of the poster to pile on to you.
Boy, over the years you and I have had differences, but on this subject I guess we've both seen so much of the same things that we are right on spot with the same opinion.
By Catocony on Sunday, February 01, 2009 - 08:25 am: Edit |
The guys do the same shit in pretty much any mongering spot on the planet, but I don't know if it's worse in one spot vs another.
Simply put, a lot of guys who move to a place like Rio or San Jose CR or Angeles or wherever, they don't have the money to support their lifestyles there. So they need to make money, and for most expats, that's hard to either legit. Either they can't legally work - not the right visa, local issues in opening businesses, don't know how to do anything, whatever. Or, the legal work doesn't pay for shit. So they do anything to make a buck.
For every Amerioca Tours (Don and Ken) in Rio, there are a dozen scam artists and clip artists. Guys who say they rent apartments, and the places are shit. You complain, and it's "sorry, you get what you get". Maybe that's not technically a scam artist, maybe just unscrupulous. Others don't even go so far as to attempt to run a legit biz. They try and act as pimps, that sort of thing.

Easy Cat, I live in San Jose... I have a normal job in the states, etc... But I see what you mean. It seems like your more likely to get clipped by a gringo down here than a tico...
By Catocony on Sunday, February 01, 2009 - 05:17 pm: Edit |
Jonesie,
Like I said, unless you're not working but have money - either retired or just lucky enough to not have to work anymore - or you have a US-paying job, then you're going to either live like a local or come up with a better way to make money for yourself. You appear to be in the former category - drawing US pay while living there.
By Jonesie on Sunday, February 01, 2009 - 05:29 pm: Edit |
You're right though. It seems like a lot of people are working an angle to keep from having to go home...

Thailand and America are both the "Land Of The Free." Therefore meaning the 'free right' to post information. Take it or leave it, the choice does remain yours. Nobody is forced to do anything they don't want to. Didn't you guys invent the Land Of The Free?
The brief but lively debate was rather interesting, but why was Angelwitch dragged into the conversation?
Nobody is forcing you to read this section, but it has obviously drawn curious readers. The point is Club Hombre don't have a problem with guys posting information - that is of course what this website is about.

America's still the land of the free. That doesn't mean that all exercises of free speech are done in good taste or are right. This board has only one poster in the Asia section who is here for profit. In the South America section there have been many over the years and that was what Catacony and LAGUY were expounding on.
Question is Dave what are the odds of some poor fool who buys that Pattaya After Dark Magazine finding and barfining the cover model compared to the odds that he'll end up buying lady drinks for the fuglies in her bar. Does Pattaya After Dark or you tell him that. Another words are the posts honest? For that matter is the magazine honest?
I don't know why I'm wasting my time going on and on in this as I've made many trips to Asia and I know what I want and what I don't. I think it's because I remember my first trip to Bangkok and thinking that I wanted to see your bar, and it was a disappointment. Then I think of all the times in the many later trips to LOS when I've shown newbies around Walking Street and had them say I want to go to Angelwitch, because they read your posts. Now I'm stuck either explaining or having to buy one of the most expensive beer's in Pattaya while your bosses obnoxious mamasans need to be fought off with a stick. In other words your posts have done their share to help make problems over the years whether you know it, admit it or recognisee it.
Brown and Williamson, Phillip Morris and others say it's a free country, but they need to put a warning with their post about their axe to grind. Maybe Hombre should make you put a warning on each post saying Dave the Rave would like the readers to spend their money on his establishments and publications.
I state that this website is about mongers hearing their experiences with each other. If you are going to sit as a monger and a businessman selling the services at the same time, then I think that you should be made into an advertiser and not a monger. I do understand that you could be both a businessman and a monger, but then your posts should avoid promoting your own business.
By Don Marco on Monday, February 02, 2009 - 08:41 am: Edit |
"That doesn't mean that all exercises of free speech are done in good taste or are right. "
Absolutely. And we have several very good examples in this thread and elsewhere.
Dave has made significant contributions to the board, much more so than many. If someone feels it their duty to be a white knight and state the obvious (Dave works in LoS and is an employee at a bar), by all means. When they infer that somehow it detracts from his contributions, it becomes inflammatory. This is not an issue of differing opinions, but an issue of questioning ones' motives and integrity.
Trolls aside, I recommend that we all return to respectful discourse.
By Jonesie on Monday, February 02, 2009 - 10:44 am: Edit |
I think Gurock has a point. I think people who are "In the Industry" should let us know. It doesn't mean we won't use their services or visit their places. It means I'd like to know who's here on business and who's here on pleasure. Whether that be with some type of notification or banner or whatever...
I don't think it's too much to ask if someone is hanging out with you for the company, or if they have a commercial interest.

Last time I was in Dave's bar in BKK, I thought the talent was the best I had seen there in years. Dave is always a good bloke to talk to and is always full of useful information about the current scene...good and bad. He is a real laid back guy with a lot to say and I like the fact that he is a straight shooter. He always buys me a Beer Lao when I am there and never hints or dicusses whether I should barfine a girl in his bar. As a matter of fact, he will point out which girls are known to give great service and which girls are dead fish fucks.
Call me crazy, but I am glad he is on this board.

I have to premiss what I am about to write by saying that I have met Dave on a number of occasions at AW over the past few years and have always found him to be a friendly and informative host. Dave makes no bones about his agenda, he states openly that he works for AW and shows in his posting all the qualities of a loyal employee. I have no problem with that where I do have a problem is with hidden agendas. Members promoting their own properties without stating there ownership. I use the information posted on this site and others to plan my trips and on more then one occasion I have been persuaded not to stay at a hotel because of what is posted here. However I have been disappointed to discover from time to time that a negative revue, and in some cases a blatenly false statement, has been fabricated to flame a hotel or establishment because the author has a personal ax to grind and is more interested in hurting then informing. For me this is more of a concern then Dave's posts, we all know where he stands and he is very open about his situation and any member reading what Dave posts can take his history into account.
By Majormajor on Monday, February 02, 2009 - 01:13 pm: Edit |
I think Dave should be able to say what he wants. If Hombre did not want him here, he would tell Dave to get lost.
If you do not like what Dave has to say, you do not have to read it.
Even if Dave's postings are tooting his own horn, if it helps someone, then he did a service.
If people do not like Dave's postings, tell him he is full of ShXt.
Otherwise, keep posting Dave.

I don't think anyone here has said Dave or others promoting their businesses shouldn't be allowed to post. The issue raised is whether those who have had bad experiences at bars or tourist services that are touted on this board either by their owners, employees, or loyal friends, should likewise be able to post their bad experiences without fear of being flamed for doing so, or being retaliated against in other ways.
And given that irrespective of the answer to this question many will nonetheless refrain from posting their bad experiences for fear of retaliation, Let the Buyer Beware when reading complimentary posts on this board about the various businesses that are touted here (as I said in an earlier post).

Hi Guys, I think the whole purpose of a chat board is of course open discussion. I've learned a lot over the years from experienced mongers on this chat board. I have met so many Club Hombre guys in person that I lost count. If people care to read trip reports, they will see 'Dave The Rave' always mentioned in a positive light. I think mongers can get carried away during chat discussions. We should not 'clog up' the system with too much bullsh*t. Launching personal attacks upon each other creates animosity and this benefits nobody.
One of the reasons I joined Club Hombre was to try to offer a different perspective. I have the advantage of a unique viewpoint from the inside looking out, as a professional in the nightlife. When guys visit me I can give them the latest nightlife news and then, mongers can hit the ground running.
FYI - Both Angelwitch Bars and my website are still doing well, so don't get the impression that I am desperate. That is far from the truth!
"Dave has made significant contributions to the board, much more so than many." (Don Marco)
As Don Marco states here, I think some guys have short memories, or they have not been around that long. Don Marco is a respected monger who I know and have met several times.
"Last time I was in Dave's bar in BKK, I thought the talent was the best I had seen there in years. Dave is always a good bloke to talk to and is always full of useful information about the current scene...good and bad. He is a real laid back guy with a lot to say and I like the fact that he is a straight shooter." (Blazers)
Again, I think Blazers who knows me sums it up in this paragraph. Blazers is one of the most experienced and respected mongers. Also, along with Don Marco, Blazers is a guy who I respect and have met several times in person.
"I have met Dave on a number of occasions at AW over the past few years and have always found him to be a friendly and informative host. Dave makes no bones about his agenda, he states openly that he works for AW and shows in his posting all the qualities of a loyal employee. I have no problem with that where I do have a problem is with hidden agendas." (Isawal)
Isawal is another respected monger, who clearly states that I openly admit who I am and where I work. You only have to look at my posts or my Personal Profile. Enough said!

Some people might not be aware that I do read and digest criticism of Angelwitch and/or myself. If I deem that criticism fair, then I proceed to report it to the Boss, or make some changes myself. In a roundabout way mongers criticism has helped to improve certain things for all concerned. For example, when I first launched my website it was in a laughable state. It was a funking eyesore! I still have a joke with friends about it now. Just over two years later and my website is as Don Marco said, "A million times better." I used Club Hombre as a 'launch test pad' and I listened to criticism from Don Marco and others. Realistically, my website is partly successful due to some of you guys. Hey guys, there's a success story! Thanks very much, I never forget these things. Cheers!

I have to admit that my time is limited sometimes and I just cannot post like I used to. What with running a Thailand nightlife website and a go-go bar on a (almost) nightly basis, there doesn't seem to be enough hours in a day.
Anyway, in good spirit here are a couple of pics of Thai chicks...

*FREE BANNER ADVERT FOR CLUB HOMBRE ON DAVE THE RAVE'S WEBSITE*
I have given Club Hombre a FREE banner advert on my website. It will run for at least one month. I think this is only fair, as I have received free publicity for my website from Club Hombre.
You can view the banner on the most recent article entitled, "Pure Blonde Promo Girls" and at the top of the "PATTAYA GO-GO BARS" page and at the bottom of the "NANA PLAZA REVIEWS" page.
Check it out! http://davetheravebangkok.com

Well, THAT sure quieted the discussion. Kinda proves the point about Dave being a good guy, despite what some people believe about the value of his information or the quality of his girls on any given night.
Having said that (as a Dave fan), I do get annoyed by Mama Nic at AW BKK bringing over girls to me on her own initiative, and then--after I've rejected them for one of my own choosing--asking for a tip. If that's her job, she's not doing it very well--better would be to ask me if there is any girl I would like to meet.
By Don Marco on Saturday, February 07, 2009 - 08:39 pm: Edit |
Calling that a discussion is too polite-- even for you hman. Dave's a stand up gent-- period.
Now, does that mean that his bar is going to be the nuts or one doesn't haven to keep their eyes open? Of course not. As for pushy mamasans and bargirls-- a no thank you, a second No, and then a spirited grope (w/no tips) session usually works well. Or if one is a graduate of the Epi tradition, dry humping for drinks usually sends them packing.
