If anyone goes to Tretes, I'd recommend the Tretes Raya Hotel. Not only are the girlfriendly, but every bartender, clerk, and janitor will try to hook you up. Wireless is available in your room for a fee of $10/day, great Japanese restaurant and decent gymn. Rooms are very clean and well furnished. The hotel itself is billed as 4* but the building itself is old. These is disco where freelancers can be found.

It's a very beautiful hotel with stunning views.

I may check this place out sometime soon. What is the best way to book it?; often in Indonesia booking through a hotel's website can be the worst way from a cost standpoint.

A few years back I just showed up and got an excellent discount at the big hotel right at the top of the hill with the fake temple statues (can't recall the name), it may be the one in the pic above. They gave me a room in a newer, smaller building off to the side, the quality was easily US mid-price, which for me means luxury.
I remember the price they gave me was app half the posted rate, and I was probably paying US$20 or so. I think it was in March, so it may have been an off-season thing. I also arrived by shared taxi/minbus, so it was obvious I wasn't a high-roller.
This would only be for arriving Monday-Thurs, as the place fills up with weekenders up from Surabaya. Also, as you've learned, be mindful of holidays.
There are also smaller, cheaper places to get rooms, but I can't say how they would feel about it if you try to bring a girl in, I'm guessing they'd look the other way while you do.
BTW, If you're looking for a quiet, pastoral mountain retreat this ain't it.
