here are the restaurants that i enjoyed:
al frescos, 27 dong du. all kinds of western food (italian, mexican, etc..). salads were very nice. also had chicken quesadillas. pizza was a bit lacking, not alot of sauce. cost was around 100,000VND with a water.
pho 24, 89 mac thi boui. pho is the vietnamese noodle soup. i ate here once each day. got the noodles with the sliced beef brisket in the soup. they give you a side tray with various additives, onions, cilantro, basil, and some other stuff that i don't know the name of. this is one of the best meals i've had in my life. 35,000VND including bottle of water (little over $2). my buddy even used his credit card, which was appalling. this is a chain and they are all over the city and i believe a couple in the PI and jakarta. to say the place was clean and friendly would be an understatement.
tan nam, 60 dong du. this was vietnamese fare. i had chicken asparagus with rice in a clay pot and on another visit i had some fried pork with noodles. around 100,000 VND with a water. i couldn't get close to finishing either dish and i was starving both times. if on a budget, share if there are two of you.
underground, 69 dong khoi. the sign for this place is the symbol for the underground in london. i only drank here but i did look at the menu. very large selection of western food. i was there in the afternoon. was told it is very popular for both food and drinking at night. some very cute ladies on the staff. clean top notch place.

on my recent trip, i enjoyed a place called "juice". i think i may have seen this chain somewhere but not positive. anyway, they made all kinds of fruit drinks, including those with power boosts and stuff like jamba juice in the US.
also had a very extensive menu including a make your own sandwich section (select bread, meat, toppings, etc..). 65,000 dong for this, about $4.
located on mac thi buoi across the street and a few doors down from linh hotel.
spent the lunch hour of several days at the lion brewery/restaurant. this place is next to the caravelle hotel and has about eight tables outside in the front. good spot for people watching around the busy lunch hour. the place is huge inside. the blond beer was good. 50,000 dong for two .4 liter glasses (about $3). never tried the food.
