for those that prefer resort style lodging, you may want to consider thara patong (tharapatong.com). located one soi north of soi bangla with frontage on the beach side road. an easy walk to bangla. 40THB for moto to get home at night if you don't want to walk.
several friends of mine have stayed here over the last couple of weeks (while i'm at the yorkshire). deluxe room w/breakfast is 2,600THB. was able to get a 10% discount on that just by asking (for a two night stay). one guy stayed 9 nights and paid for 7. the smaller room is 2,100THB. have a couple pools and the resort is layed out nicely. low rise buildings, etc... not a big giant tower.
they do charge a joiner fee, 400THB payable to security when you come home at night. also, internet in room is 150THB per hour (or something like that, not good in any case).
if you need the full service style and don't need internet often, this might be good for you. one of the few resorts that is easy walk to bangla.

I stayed here during my last Phuket visit and was not especially impressed. The rooms were a bit run down, given the price, and while mine was very spacious (it was a poolfront room), it didn't have much in the way of amenities.
I managed to sneak around the security guy all but one night.
I've yet to find a hotel in Phuket I really like. Too many are overpriced, lack good service, and charge joiner fees.

they've renovated the rooms, some 100% and others a "semi reno". one bldg was still closed due to the reno. i looked through several different rooms when selecting for my friends. they were very happy with their rooms (very large, 3rd floor overlooking the pool).
i visited just about every hotel that has any frontage on the beach road and has a pool. this one and baan laimai seemed to be the best (price, room quality, amount of joiner fee).
you pay alot to be near the beach/bangla rd. there are many decent hotels on nanai rd (i looked at many on this rd also) and they are half the price and do not charge joiner fees.
during high season, i'd avoid phuket. pricing off the charts.
