Recently had an overnight layover in Hong Kong and this hotel was recommended to me by Futbolito. As far as price and location, I'd have to given it two thumbs up.
I scored an overnight rate of 500 HKD (about 65 US dollars) to stay here. The rooms were a bit small and the bed was hard as a rock, but all in all it was a great value.
In addition, it is on Lockhart Road right in the middle of the Wan Chai action in this part of Hong Kong. Although I didn't participate (was coming back from 10 days in AC), it would be very convenient to do so from this hotel. I do not know if the hotel is girl friendly so YMMV.
Additionally, it is VERY easy to get to from the airport. Take the Airport Express into Hong Kong, walk to the blue MRT line and take that to the Wan Chai exit. After getting off, look for the Lockhart Street exit and turn left after coming out on the street. The hotel is about a block and a half away. Total cost in Jan. 2010, 104 HKD. Total time from airport to hotel about 35 minutes.
Going back to the airport was just as easy and I had the additional convenience of being able to check in for my flight at the in-town check-in at the Airport Express terminal. That saved me from carting my check-in back all the out to the airport.
I would stay here again.

the walk from the central airport express to the central MTR station (blue line and red line) takes a little time and effort with a bag (even with wheels). as does getting out of the wanchai MTR station and down the street. i tried this once and will not do it again.
i'd recommend a taxi from central airport express to any hotel in wanchai. the cost is probably $3 (25hkd) and you'll almost always get there faster this way. even in rush hour traffic. i walk alot in HK and use the MTR alot. so i'm not a chronic taxi guy. this is just one case where a taxi is probably a better bet.

It is about a 3 minute walk from the central Airport Express station to the central MTR station. An additional 2 minute walk from the Wan Chai station to Lockhart street is also required. If you have a lot of luggage or are just a fat fuck, a taxi might be a better option. I am in neither category, so the walk didn't kill me.

The Wharney is guest friendly, meaning you can bring a girl to your room, not sure if there is an extra fee. Not bad since, last time I stayed at Harbourview Hotel, there was a sign in the lobby saying "No Guests after 10PM". Wharney is a good location near the Wan Chai clubs and bars and near MTR.

the wharney is a great hotel for location and price. i've never stayed there but i've been very close many times. but ended up with friends or the rate got a little high and i chose to stay on the kowloon side close to the intercontinental (see below for my reasons).

i'm glad it felt like 3 minutes and 2 minutes. that means you did everything "right" and/or got lucky. i've waited 2 minutes just to cross the street in wanchai so i'm not sure how you made it to the wharney that quick.
to all that want to go to the wharney:
the walk btwn airport express and central station is just under 10 minutes. i stay at a friend's place just off the escalators and i enter the hong kong MTR (adjacent to central airport express) and walk to the central MTR in order to get over to TST on the kowloon side. a good friend of mine stays at the intercon over there and they have a great pool area. i get my friend's key and use that as my day spa. so i do the walk w/o luggage almost daily when i'm in HK (and i'm there now).
there are moving walkways so the struggle with the luggage isn't so much carrying/dragging, etc.... it is trying to deal with all the people. if you are a fat fuck, it might work better as you can just power through them. my college buddies call me "the scrawny bird" as in, "shut up you scrawny bird or i'll kick your ass". i swear people were stepping on my bag trying to vault over me suggesting that somehow i was slowing people down even though there were hordes of people right in front of me.
the biggest "mistake" that can be made is not having change or small bills. if you've just come from the airport, you may only have 100's and 500's. the tickets for the MTR require change or 10's and 20's. some people wait in line for the machine before they realize this. then you have to go over to the customer service desk and get change. usually, you'll be in another line there. then you go back to the ticket machine and wait in line again. many people are using the machines for the first time and really struggle, even though it is so simple. i have an octopus card so i don't usually have to deal with this. however, sometimes i'm with someone who does not have one and i get to endure this delay.
if you have an octopus card and know exactly what you are doing, it will take at least 20 minutes to get from central airport express to the wharney. if you just miss a train, add 5 minutes or more if non-peak. not what i'd call a long time but a taxi is much quicker.
when you get off the airport express train, you can see the taxi line right in front of you. it moves very fast unless it is raining. if it is raining take the MTR for sure. otherwise, get in the taxi, pay the 25hkd, and you'll be at the wharney in less than 5 minutes (rush hour is probably 10). sometimes you'll get a driver that doesn't speak a word of english but every driver knows "wanchai" and "lockhart" so you can't get screwed over. one time i was going up to a guy's place off stubbs rd (major road) and my driver had no clue. so i told him to just drop me at wanchai/lockhart rd. i got out with my bags and got a new taxi there that took me up to stubbs rd.
i used to take the MTR from LKF to wanchai until my HK friends laughed at me. last night it took 3 minutes in a taxi and it cost 18hkd. little closer than the central MTR but darn close.

i tried the wharney for the first time. got the executive room for 1,100hkd all-in using latestays.com. wasn't worth it. i switched to bishop lei on robinson rd in midlevels area.
the location is good and i'd definitely stay there if i could get the standard room for 500-600hkd all-in. at the time, i think the standard was going for 800 and i decided to try the nicer room (executive) for the first 4 days. then had the standard reserved for the next 7. cancelled the second reservation and moved to bishop lei.
one problem for me was the TV. no cnbc or bloomberg. i trade stocks and like to have those channels. they did have espn. the 'book' in the room said 'no guests after 11pm' but my HK friends tell me that is BS. but i didn't pull any ladies (didn't see alot of talent, kind of depressing....).
i took a taxi from central airport express station. i exited the train at 3:53pm, in a taxi by 3:57, and at the wharney by 4:05pm. one of the reasons i booked the wharney was i knew i could get to the hotel quick and easy (taxi or mtr if long taxi line). but, the taxi guy didn't know the name of the hotel. i had to tell him lockart rd and luard rd (or course he knew wanchai). i think they call the hotel the GDH now (wharney guang dong is the orignal name and that is still written out front but i think they may be trying to go with GDH instead now). a friend that met me there had the same problem, his taxi guy didn't recognize 'wharney'. seems strange. so if you plan to stay here, you might need to use cross streets or say GDH (room key said GDH).
