I am looking to drive next weekend in El Salvador. I have received some info from Mapache, who lived there for 6 years. Basically he cautioned me to be careful at night for 2 reasons.
1. Many of the roads are not well lit and there are a fair number of breakdowns. This combination is dangerous, as you could hit a car left partially on the road.
2. There is some poverty in this country, car jackings are not unheard of. You could say that about Miami too.
I am especially interested in going to La Libertad from both Zona Rosa and the airport, if anyone has additional information. Also, where can I get a map ahead of time ?

The drive from Zona Rosa to La Libertad is farely safe. I have made the drive many times after 2:00 a.m.
Always make your hotal plans before you go. One thing for sure go directly to hotel if after 2:00 a.m. I highly recommend a hotel called Santa Fe., This hotel is a family owned hotel with 2 pools and security service 24 hours. The rates are great around $35 for a room with AC. Yes AC in central America.
When you get to La Libertad make a right at the shell gas station. Only one road to go thru the downtown part of La Libertad, follow this road thru town and continue. Hotel should be on the right hand side about 2-4 KM after you make the right turn at the gas station.
