Just got back from CR and wanted to post that a new terminal usage fee went into effect Saturday, May 4. Fee is 4.10 USD or 1500 colones. This is in addition to the usual 17.00 USD departure tax.

I used my Visa card at the airport to pay the $26.00 exit fee to leave the country. When I checked my credit statement today, I saw that they had put it through as a cash advance, for which the credit card company added a $15.00 fee. (3% or $15, whichever is greater). I believe this to be in line with most credit card companies, which also charge an inflated interest rate on the cash advance portions.
I got the charge reversed by calling my CC company, but better to have the cash to pay the exit fee.
