I’d be careful. I haven’t smoked in ten years or so, but on my 1st trip to C.R. as a teenager, I did buy pot in San Jose and Jaco Beach. It’s been so long I don’t remember where I found it, but I just asked the locals and found somebody.

Others may know the legal situation. I think pot is illegal, but I’ve heard having enough for personal use is not a serious offense and they will confiscate it and tell you to leave if you’re a Gringo. I’ve heard they give Ticos a much harder time. Even if this is true, how do you know how much you can have? If the penalty is a fine or a slap on the wrist, how long would the Tico justice system take to resolve it? If it’s anything like the rest of the government there, you can expect it to be slow as molasses. If you don’t speak Spanish, could this cause a problem too.

For what it’s worth, this is from the American Consular Advisory 8/01:

"Penalties for possession, use, or trafficking in illegal drugs in Costa Rica are strict, and convicted offenders can expect lengthy jail sentences and fines. In addition to the criminal penalties they may face, tourists who purchase or sell illegal drugs or use the services of prostitutes greatly increase their risk of personal harm. Several Americans have died in Costa Rica in recent years in incidents related to drug use or patronage of prostitutes."

Cuidate,

It is illegal but the laws for personal use and possession aren't strictly enforced. Don't smoke in public and be careful who you buy from, or ask to buy from. Don't try to bring it into the country or take it out of the country.

I agree with CityDude - Don't do it. I don't know anything about the particulars of Costa Rica justice but foreign jails really suck (see Midnight Express). If you stay real busy taking chicas out of the Blue Marlin or Idem, herb probably shouldn't even enter you mind. :) Those Colombian women are delicious.

I was down there in the DR and BM last month and numerous chicas were railing lines. I had one chick come up to me the first night and after I bought her a drink, she asked if I wanted to smoke. I questioned it until she pulled out this little case and let me take a wiff. Another chica rolled one up when we got up to my room. My advise, ask a chica that you talk to after a few minutes and I will bet she can locate it. I also rolled on E the last time that I was there. What an expierence that was.

I strongly urge all posters to refrain from discussion of all illegal activities on this board, including purchase and use of drugs as well as other activities that could cause this forum and its posters embarassment, harassment, or more serious consequences. We've got a great community, with a lot of valuable information being shared. Lets not ruin a good thing. Discretion and common sense are great guidelines for all posters.
