I'm a white male, 33yo, that travels to Costa Rica every couple of months. I spend most of my time in or around San Jose, since about 85% of the total population of Costa Rica is located in San Jose. There are a number of different "types" of girls there... ranging from bar girls, club girls, and street girls.

Bar girls are typically middle priced girls (~$40-$60) though the first price you're quoted is typically about $100 (don't pay that much- too many other options). Most of these girls hang out at such bars as the Blue Marlin (in Hotel Del Rey) or Key Largo. Any cab driver will be able to get you to both of these places. Key Largo was just recently purchased by the owner of the Blue Marlin- so these clubs will probably quickly become very similar. Key Largo used to have a live band every night at 10pm but since the change in ownership the band only plays a few times a week now. The atmosphere is fine and safe and it is in a safe part of town. Beers run a few dollars and no one really hassles you.

Club girls are found at the numerous strip clubs in the area. My order of preference happens to be: Elite, Hollywood, Cheetahs, and Puro Platino as the top three. The other ones that are making it but in my opinion less classy are Olympus (typically have Philipina girls), Las Vegas (currently a lot of Russian girls), and then much further down the ladder clubs liek VIP or Pantera Rosa (both located in shakey parts of the city). The strip clubs are fun, the atmosphere is great, and you treated well by the staff and the girls. These places quickly become expensive as you buy girls drinks (typically about $20 per drink) and get lap or private dances ($10-$20). Me and my friends have dropped over $3,500 in a night in these types of places... check frequently with your waiter on what your tap is and review your check to make sure you're not overcharged. Girls will leave with you (or Club Hollywood has beds in the club!) for about $100-$300. The price is negotiated between the customer, the girl, and the club.

Street girls can be had from $5-$20 and can be found around the Holiday Inn (downtown), and near Key Largo, etc. Be careful because a lot of the street girls will pick your pockets, take off your chains, watches, etc. Also quite a few of the girls are transsexuals... to each their own I suppose.

Prostitution in Costa Rica is legal and working girls should be able to show you their "health cards" which they receive every week after a doctor's exam.

The country is a blast... see you there!

I would avoid street action in SJO.

There are no health cards or mandatory doctors exams. What the Ticas are showing is a cedula which all the Ticos have.
